Welcome to the Parenting Roundabout Podcast.

I'm Terry Moro and I'm Catherine Helico.

As parents and parenting writers, we can't help but see everything through a parenting

lens.

But as our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested in getting caught

up on movies and streaming than on going over the same parenting topics over and over.

So since we're pretty sure we can find parenting wisdom anywhere, we're going to talk about

what we're watching, what we thought about it, and maybe what we can learn from it, if

only what not to do.

Each Tuesday, we bring you our thoughts on a newer entertainment property and for this

week of March 2nd, March 2nd, we're discussing shrinking season 3, episode 5, hold your

horses, and that's probably good advice for everybody on this show because this is

the season for moving on and they are really bad at moving on.

They are really bad at it.

Gabby decides what she wants to do next, Derek too helps her to do it.

She almost, almost, breaks up with them.

Sean, for Sean moving on is apparently going to a rave with high school students.

This does not sound like moving on to me.

I think he's right to be saying really I would just like to work at my truck, can I just

work at my truck, y'all go and have fun.

Paul is going to move to Connecticut with Meg, presumably Julie is going to move to Connecticut

with Meg.

Right.

Julie wants to leave it in this episode, like to anyone.

And then Jimmy of course, you got to find a, you got to move on with somebody after

your dead wife and the first date was terrible and then he's like admitting that he really

likes Sophie, but no, oh, oh, wait, he and Meg are kissing and it appears to be going

upstairs.

Yes.

So this is after he, this is after he told Meg that he wanted an uncomplicated kiss.

Right.

So this would be probably the most complicated one you could come up with, sir.

Yes.

Yes.

Oh, yes.

And I mean, it's not like we couldn't have seen it coming from that conversation in the

storage unit, storage unit, but still no, no, don't do it, don't let her in the house,

Jimmy.

Nothing good will come of this.

Oh, golly, just so many very bad ideas in one episode.

What is wrong with you people?

Maybe Meg should move to California.

If indeed Paul goes to Connecticut and Alice goes to Connecticut, is every freaking

member of his cast can I have to go to Connecticut or they can have to make up a reason Charlie's

job transfers him to Connecticut.

And let's see, there are two's job transfers him to Connecticut and Derek one has a hard

specialist that is only in Connecticut and pretty soon the entire show has moved from

Pasadena to Connecticut.

There will be a certain delight in seeing all those pieces fall into place, but you guys

cut it out.

That's too much.

Too much.

The Connecticut board of film is lobbying hard.

They are trying.

We can take care of you guys out here.

Oh, well, I don't know, I don't know, just making that decision.

Always that there was that in the same, the one where Alice slept with Liz's son who

was dating Summer, the episode with the part where they were kissing, there was a song

that just was going, it's all right, it's all right, make mistakes, make mistakes, it's

all right.

No, it's not all right for Alice to make mistakes.

Jimmy and Meg, no, no, no, no, no, no, it's not all right, let's go to the next day when

the song was making bad decisions.

Goodness.

Anyway.

Yes.

So, this was an episode, which things happened, and Liz still trying to reconcile with her

son who has a very snarky response to whatever text.

I mean, you deserved it, I'm sorry, Liz.

Yeah, Liz deserved it, but he's really, you know, he's milking it now.

Yeah.

She says, I've never, I've never called a boy this much.

Yes, I used to be cool.

Mm-hmm.

Oh, poor Liz, it's, it's a mistake we've all made as moms wear a shoot, I'm actually in

the wrong here.

Right.

It's not good.

Give me a minute.

I all like that.

Oh, golly.

And we had a couple of musical interludes of note while driving, Brian and Jimmy perform

a number from Les Mis, which in fact, Jason Siegel is kind of known for doing that and did

it on a couple of talk shows with Neil Patrick Harris back in the day.

Okay.

It's, it's ishtic, but it was entertaining and, and Paul and the backseat going, what

has happened here.

He said, did you just make that?

And then also at the end, when, uh, Meg and Jimmy are making bad decisions, that is not

the song that is playing.

It is a version of REM's night swimming song by Jason Siegel and for some reason, not

on Apple Music as of right now, although they do have a, uh, season three playlist.

I love the playlist from these seasons.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Why Apple TV's thing would not have that on Apple Music immediately, I don't know, but

you can listen to it on YouTube.

Right.

Because he presumably they have permission, otherwise it wouldn't have been in the episode.

So.

Correct.

Correct.

So.

What do we think of Sean's girlfriend?

Is Bella Gomez.

Right.

Isn't that right?

Yes.

I mean, no shade on Isabella Gomez, but who we enjoy in, yes.

We enjoyed on one day at a time, playing a very different character, very different indeed.

This one, how old is she supposed to be?

I don't know, but she's, she's a bad influence on Sean.

Why is she hanging out with high schoolers exactly?

And like, why is Paul encouraging her?

Yes.

You know, Sean is like, look, you know, I'm stable, I feel safe.

Right.

Like, that's good.

That's important, right?

I mean, this guy was messed up, he had some really bad PTSD and he was really struggling.

And now he's in a great place and why can't Paul be like, yep, you need to stay

in your great place.

I don't understand this advice.

Absolutely.

Yeah, I don't either.

And, you know, Paul is maybe not making such great decisions for himself right now.

So who knows?

Right.

But I mean, when he went into that party and there's the lights flashing and stuff, I'm

thinking is this going to trigger some PTSD or something that I would have been going

a little nuts in that place.

Right.

Let's hope nobody pushes him.

Yeah.

But, yeah, I, is that doctor still available?

Did she find somebody more appropriate?

Because you were all nice.

Yeah.

I don't know.

This is all part of the seasonal finding your way forward after trauma.

And I guess people are going to make mistakes, make mistakes, but I'm not so interested in

watching that.

At least, at least, I mean, some of them, I mean, Liz saying that front of her son is

painful, but real life, yeah.

Other things that are going on, Derek, too, is the most patient man in the world because

Gabby, Gabby says, I almost, you know, we almost broke up and he's like, oh, we did.

Yeah.

She's, as we've said before, a lot of this people on the show are a lot, so let's see.

What else was going on here?

Alice also had to, you know, assume a parenting ish, slash therapist role with, with Sean,

with the same result, you know, with what's actually a stronger, he listened to her more

than he listened to Paul.

That's true.

That's true.

Do we believe she wasn't really attracted to him that she just was like, I don't remember

what she said, but when she kissed him?

Yeah.

I think she was.

I mean, it's easy for her, easy for her to, yeah, right, Khan.

She's all healthy now, you know, but all that stuff is in the past, yes.

Somebody asked Jimmy, oh, he asked Jimmy and somebody else, who was the other person?

Oh crap.

Oh, ask Jimmy and Paul, I guess Brian asked Jimmy and Paul to tell him how you raised

strong women who idolize their daddies, but not so much that they date old men.

Right.

How does one do that exactly?

Good question.

Maybe it wasn't Paul because I wouldn't say Maggie idolizes him.

Who else has a daughter in this show?

Yeah.

Who was he asking?

Brian, I know he is definitely asking Jimmy.

Yeah, but that's it, right?

I feel like there's definitely somebody else.

Oh, well, yeah, because Paul has a daughter.

I mean, yeah, Paul has a daughter, but he, I don't think he was there and also he didn't

raise her.

So I think it was when, I think it was when they were going out in the car, so I think

Paul was there.

Oh, well, anyway, that's a good question.

Yes.

Not sure that this has provided the answer, and though Alice, I wouldn't say that Alice

idolizes Jimmy.

Right.

She has a very clear, eyed picture of Jimmy.

Yes.

Yes.

They have, you could say they have raised strong, independent women.

Yes.

So that's whether Brian wants to do that or not, no, but good luck to him.

And parenting wise, what else, Liz is in mom hell of your kid.

You've made a mistake and you want to apologize and your kid will not have it.

So what lesson, what tip do we take from that?

Check the room before you say rude things.

Look for recording devices.

Is there a video bunny on the shelf?

Is a door open?

Is your kid coming back just recanoiter thoroughly before you say that thing?

Don't say it on a podcast where somebody can record it and play it back to your child.

Can we check back through the years of podcasts we have?

Check the air vents.

But it's once you lose that upper hand and your child has it, it is very hard to get

things back right.

Yeah.

You're going to have to pay quite dearly.

She's going to have to grobble basically.

And that's not good for anybody.

No.

It definitely knocks her out of her privileged position that she has to basically have.

And all because Derek had to grow a spine.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That was the repercussions of forcing your spouse to do something.

Right.

It's always going to splash back on you no matter what.

You know, you can think you go do this thing and then I'll be in the clear and I can be

the good parent who's sympathetic, but it's always going to come back on you.

Right.

That's that's a truth of it's a team sport.

It's a team sport.

Fortunately or unfortunately.

Yeah.

I think it at one time Jimmy says he has tried to set an example as a.

Bleep up and there's sometimes some value to showing your child.

What it's like to fail and what it's like to do stupid things and that you can live through

it and survive it.

And you don't want necessarily your child to then go ahead and do that, but everybody

does that.

Everybody makes mistakes.

And you know, it's good to know that you can survive them.

Yes.

And that they will not be the end of the world, although your son may make you pay for

it.

Yeah.

And Jimmy, they're doing lots of, lots of examples of making the stakes now.

Oh my goodness.

Oh my goodness.

I mean, I mean, this is I like mid season, right?

We got to we got to go back in order to go forward.

So I was reading a Reddit forum on the episode and some people seemed to feel that when

Meg went to the wedding, there was something said or implied that she was separated from

Dave or that there was there was problems at home.

Did you get that vibe?

Well, she was being very flirty, right?

But I don't remember hearing that she was actually separated.

Yeah, because I mean, as bad of an idea as it is for Jimmy to take up with Paul's daughter,

if she's married, that makes it way way worse or at least more complicated, depending

on your particular worldview, but so it would be very helpful if they were separated

or he had done something or there was some reason why what's in this for her?

I guess it's Jimmy wanted an uncomplicated kiss, which boy is that completely not.

But he wanted an easy win.

But yikes.

Yeah.

And what of Kobe Smolders?

Yes.

She's still waiting in the wings.

He did say he liked her and it just because of that, it was complicated, but also because

both of them were dithering idiots when they're together, but it doesn't need to be complicated

dude.

No.

Just.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So maybe she's moving to she's been bumped to next season.

It said, well, we're going to do it a fill the time.

I know.

Lily's available.

Let's bring Megan.

Right.

It's, um, these people are really good at complicating their lives and they're really

excellent at it.

You know, they give them kudos for that.

If there was an Emmy for complicating your life, this show would be covered with them.

Yes.

It's not that hard to just kind of live like normal people yet, but, uh, and maybe it

is.

Well, we do it all the time, don't we?

I liked when, when, uh, Jimmy said he had, I guess, asked Paul for some advice on relationships

and Meg said, relationship helped from my dad.

There was an a murderer or a five year old.

You can ask.

Right.

Now, see, there is some thinking in parenting circles that give really bad advice and

then nobody will ever ask you anything and you won't have to worry.

Right.

So I think that's Paul's plan, maybe just, uh, give the impression that you would be the

worst person in the world to ask for any advice.

Right.

Well, he's, he is a psychologist.

He is a therapist.

Yes.

A therapist.

So in a, in a non-professional manner, he wants strangers to ask him for advice, not

the people he works with, but, uh, yeah, parenting wise.

You maybe want to not be a, you want, you want to be able to advise your kids, but at the

same time, it's such a responsibility.

And if it goes badly, it's reverberating on you.

Yes.

At a certain age, maybe you want to be able to say, um, go live your life, figure it out.

It's all right.

Make mistakes.

Yeah.

I keep going back to those songs because boy, they could have played them in this episode

too.

They were so appropriate.

This episode also had the, um, adult children dealing with parents situations, um, you

know, Gabby pointing out like he's not going to appreciate it with Jimmy, you know, doing

stuff for Paul as he, as he works towards retirement.

Uh-huh.

He's not going to appreciate it.

He's not even going to notice it.

Like he's, you'll never get that.

Thank you.

You're dreaming.

Yes.

And, you know, and then her mom comes around and complicates things, of course.

Um, so yeah, that's, you know, like it doesn't stop and it goes both ways.

That get together with Gabby's house to talk about, uh, the direct to situation, bringing

in Verne Watson and, uh, the actress who plays the art gallery lady.

Yeah.

Just for about one line each.

Just check a, check a box on a contract.

Okay.

And we have them for three episodes this season.

Right.

What are we going to do with them?

Okay.

I know.

Right.

Um, which is fine.

Nice to see y'all.

Mm-hmm.

I took me a minute to remember.

Congratulations on that paycheck.

It took me a minute to be like, okay, she, the, the, the art gallery person, you know,

that played Gabby's exes next flame, who's now, not with him anymore.

In fairness to all of us who are like, who, uh, she's changed her hair, I think.

She looks different.

Okay.

She had a very specific look last season.

And I don't think she has that same look now, which, you know, good for her, people change

their hair.

And, uh, but, but, yeah, a few times, if saying, oh, you remember her from the art gallery?

Remember that time we went to the art gallery?

She dated him too.

That was helpful to me.

A little flashback, maybe, you know, remember that time?

Mm-hmm.

Oh, well, you know, because I like the actress.

Happy to see her yet and work.

Right.

But, you know, there's a lot of people, there's a lot of people in this show.

Yes.

So, like, I mean, there's a lot of people, there's going to be a lot of people.

There are currently a lot of people.

Um, what, what channel was it?

I think it's Amazon Prime that you could click something and it comes up with the names

of...

Oh, yeah.

After some of the stuff.

Apple TV.

Yes.

Could you do us a solid?

It would be very helpful because, you know, I have to jump over to IMDB and then I maybe

lose a line or two.

Yes.

Yeah, it was like a pop-up, it's like a pop-up video situation.

It would have to say not only the character's name and the actor's name, but you remember

they are the ones who did this thing.

Remember that episode where this happened?

Oh my, maybe it's just for old people.

Probably Alice in Summer and Marisol can watch this stuff and have no problem at all.

All of these issues.

I am much closer to Paul.

So, anything else we want to see about this week?

I think we're good.

I think our decision is to move on.

Except, I don't want to move on to the next episode.

I don't like where the next episode is going.

By the way, this is not for the next episode, but for a future episode, Jimmy did say something

about his father.

Yes.

So, Jeff Daniels is coming back.

He called his father emotionally elusive, which sounds like something you say to your

therapist.

All right.

So, as bad as the ending of this episode, figuring for the beginning of the next episode, I have

with dread note that next Tuesday, we will continue with season three episodes six called

Derrick's Don't Die.

They don't.

That is correct.

Do you hear me?

Neither one of them.

Yes.

But, according to Apple's description of the episode, Derrick has a health crisis, which

we knew was coming.

Do not want.

Yes.

Because as we noted, there was a bookmark dropped, oh, he may have a heart problem, but it's

probably just the gummies.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That's like, you know what's coming, but I didn't think it was coming so soon.

And I cannot tell you how much I do not want Derrick to be part of a sad storyline.

Stop it.

Yeah.

He is.

He is difficult or anything.

Right.

That's not his role here.

Yeah.

Come on.

Exactly.

I know some shows think, well, you got to take those characters and give them something

meaty.

No.

No, you don't.

You have a lot of characters.

Yes.

There's plenty of meat here.

There's people who are dealing with real trauma.

Just let Derrick be happy.

The thing with Liz last year was painful enough.

Okay.

Yeah.

That's the limit.
