comes back on Thursday so we checked in with David Phillips with Environment and Climate

Change Canada to find out what the heck is going on here.

We also had a chat about remote work working from home.

Is it time to let go of the bring everyone back mindset?

Wednesday, which means our weekly Wednesday Jets chat is the Jets Lost again on Tuesday.

Ahead of their final game of the season on Thursday, John Shannon joined us to discuss that.

And inspired by the frustration I experienced trying to access the label, the instructions

on the label on the pills that I got, we asked you about adventures with packaging.

Hello there, it is Mackling and McGarry on this Wednesday, April 15th, 18 today, winter

tomorrow.

David Phillips joins us at 805, my gosh, I have no words.

This is not unprecedented, I understand that, but man, when you're in the middle of it,

you're looking outside and you're thinking about maybe getting in your yard, getting some

work done.

And then I knew that the weather was changing dramatically, I was not expecting some sort

of special weather statement today.

Yeah.

What because it's going to be shorts and t-shirt weather this afternoon?

No, because of what's coming tonight and into tomorrow.

Yeah, and I was on the weather network app this morning and they have a piece up here

of how Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba could see some interesting conditions.

So it looks like Winnipeg won't be in the path of the, we're more likely to get more freezing

rain and snow, which is kind of concerning, just as I think about this now, we got to drive

out to headingly tomorrow morning for the the tri-hospital lottery launch, yeah.

So that should be interesting.

In the dark, going to a place that have no idea how to navigate, typically if I'm driving

out that way, we're turning right and going to the hockey for all center, like we did in

back in September for the training camp or maybe you might be going, or if you're going

to an event at Red River Exhibition place, but never do I turn left and go into head

and lead.

I'm sort of excited and curious, but also I'm going to get lost and worried about the

driving conditions.

Well, I guess the good thing is, and this is not a shot at anybody who's done this, the

good thing is I still have my winter tires, same.

So that doesn't mean we'll get through whatever Mother Nature has in store for us tomorrow

morning, but I suspect we shall be okay.

I guess from a workflow standpoint, and this may be more of an off-air conversation,

but we're talking now.

Probably going to have some cancellations tomorrow.

Oh, so this is going to be a fun day tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to the lottery launch, the tri-hospital lottery launch tomorrow and

all that goes with it.

It's always great to be out of the studio and be somewhere else.

It's like a field trip when you're in grade four and you're going to the zoo and you

pack your lunch and the school bus comes and it takes you to somewhere different and

there's no classes and then you come back and you're on cloud nine.

This will be a little different tomorrow, I guess.

Yeah.

And they'll have food tomorrow as well.

Oh, so good point.

What was the reason for the cake?

One of our colleagues, Randall, who's been here for, is it 40 years?

He doesn't look like he could have had a job for 40 years.

He honest to goodness, very youthful in his spirit and demeanor.

He's been a camera.

They call him in the biz and the TV biz, they call him a shooter, Brett.

He's a camera guy and one of the best in the business, anywhere in the business.

And the stuff that he remembers from filming highlights from the Winnipeg Jets in particular,

of Jets conversations with him that go like six layers deep.

Oh, yeah.

I remember that game and then the post game interview was so and so and such and such.

Holy moly.

He's got like a photographic memory.

So congratulations, Randall.

It's been a pleasure to get to know you.

And here's to I won't say for who wants to work 40 more years, here's to 40 more weeks,

40 more months.

But anything that brings cake into our building, I'm all for it.

What kind of cake is that?

It's a white cake to sheet cake, white cake with the lemon custard filling in the middle

with white icing on top.

But we're also going to hear from the former coach of the Winnipeg jets.

We're going to we're going to go back in time.

A couple of years to Rick bonus's reaction to the jets when they were dispatched by the

Vegas gold nights and five games.

Really, it was a gentleman sweep as they call it jets when the first game, Vegas one

fourth straight after that.

And then last night, Rick bonus went off on his Columbus blue jackets will share extended

audio of that.

And Greg and I were asked what our favorite deep purple song was, but we had to decide

together and can only choose from smoke on the water, child in time, or highway star.

The more you know, now before we get to the sounds that did you want to react, well,

you know, we had, we had, we had that story in the news with regards to the excise tax

being cut.

And but we also had a really nice text message from our friend, Chris Glowak, about our

friend Randall Paul, who's celebrating 40 years in the broadcast industry is a cameraman.

And you know what?

It's two, it's two early for me to go on a nasty rant.

I just bothered by the fact that you know what I will very quickly go back to the second

story in in in Sarah's news.

Not everyone is sold on the federal government's move to cut the excise tax.

I'm just reading Sarah's story here, Professor Mosha Lander from Concordia University says,

we can't flip flop on this.

If the purpose is to try and recognize that extraction of oil, extraction of gas and the processing

of it and the use in our economy, it creates an environmental consequence, climate change,

global warming, then we can't be situational about it.

We can't say when times are tough, let's ignore the environmental consequences, but when

times are good, we can put that tax in place.

Okay.

So that's a, my mind, that's the carbon tax, which we've already suspended.

This 10 cent excise tax, I think a lot of people think of it as the road tax.

I think we've earned, like if the government is looking at this and going, this isn't extraordinary

circumstance where we need to give consumers relief, because our economy is still geared towards

vehicles that run on diesel and gasoline.

We have to get places, we have to move goods, we have to provide services.

These are the vehicles, this is the system we're working within now.

And I respect the idea of where we'd like to be, but now is now, and this is six months

of suspending this tax for 10 cents.

I don't think that's, I don't think that's people rushing out now all of a sudden to just

drive around the perimeter aimlessly because gas is 10 cents cheaper.

That's not what's going to happen here.

Yeah.

It bothers me because we can't, the, the middle is so hard to find.

And they just find takes like that, just off putting.

In 2022, 23, the Jets were pushing for first place as Rick bonus mentioned until January

and then they.

MMA had to basically hang on for dear life to make it into the playoffs that year.

Well, last night, the Columbus Blue Jacket started the opposite this year.

They dropped their final game of the season.

Rick bonus took over the team in January.

They were 1919 and seven at the time.

Bonus led them to a 21 11 and five record.

They'd worked themselves into a playoff spot.

But man, did they stumble down the stretch?

They were 27 and one in their final 10 games and they lost their last six home games in

a row, including the last two won to the capitals last night.

Rick, you've been a part of a lot of games in a lot of seasons.

Have you ever been a part of something that's as frustrating as this has been to all stretch?

No.

You know, you know, how I got to look at this statute, three hits, 23 giveaways, like,

I don't know if I'm back, but if I'm back, I'm changing this culture.

These guys, they don't care, losing is not important enough to them.

It doesn't bother them.

How can you go out and play like that?

Should have done this for about a month ago, but this is why we are where we are.

This is why we're out of the playoffs.

That kind of effort, losing, you have to hate losing.

I'll try to make this quick.

I had a, a gout flare up over the weekend.

My left foot was super sore.

I could barely walk.

And it was in my, my finger.

My right, the index finger in my right hand was, I was just throbbing.

And I thought I got to do something about this.

And I remembered listener who goes by the name buzz blaze.

AKA Johnny buckles.

He had texted us last time we were talking about gout.

And I messaged him.

I said, what was the name of that stuff that you told us about?

And he said it's the brand is organica.

And he said he can find it at shoppers.

So I looked online and found that they had a couple in stock at the shoppers drug ward on gulay.

So I went, got them.

And I've got, there you go.

But when these, you know how pill bottles have these extra instructions that are hidden like in the label,

where you got to peel back the front layer of the label.

I can never access them.

And this morning I was trying and I wasted like 10 minutes trying to tear this label open.

And all I ended up doing was peeling it off.

like Christmas or some event sometime, had gotten a bunch of barbies and me being the older cousin.

So I was, I sadly sat quiet on the bus as I waited to get home so I could destroy that package with whatever scissors I could find.

So we want to talk about remote work.

And this came up in discussion yesterday on the Jim Toath show.

He was speaking with President of Wow Hospitality Doug Steven.

And the primary focus of the discussion was what is the end of the Jets season

mean for restaurants and he's Steven says it actually could be beneficial.

Interestingly enough, in our restaurants that aren't downtown, including 529,

the deep was that the Jets go business starts to tell of it because those that do go to the games are spending large amounts of money to go to the game.

And there's only so much disposable income.

But he adds his downtown restaurants will take a hit the without the playoff run.

But in that discussion with Jim, remote work came up because, of course, in this building here at 201 Portage,

we have uptown food and beverage.

So we have the coffee shop in our lobby.

We have the actual restaurant.

There's the burger stand downstairs.

Right.

And depending on how many people are working in the building in a given day.

And you notice it because you go down every morning, you're down multiple times on the main level.

So you you've sort of got it figured out that there are a couple of days of week where it's far

dis year in this building than it is others.

Yes.

Yeah.

And it does.

It typically seems to be like Tuesday, Wednesday.

But sometimes it's Wednesday, Thursday.

But I can all doesn't regardless of the day of the week.

I can always tell when it's, oh, this is a work at the office day depending on how long the lineup is to get on an elevator.

The point being it's not the same every single day.

No.

So if you've got a business in the downtown that aims to service those folks, it can be difficult A in terms of business period.

But then when does that business come?

How do you staff for that?

How do you prepare to be busy and then not be busy or prepare and get used to not being busy and then all of a sudden you are.

And then people go, I ain't going back there because they can't handle it when it gets busy.

So we want to just share the how the brief exchange that Jim had with Doug Steven and how that came up in the discussion here.

Every time I pass 529 here at Portage, it's got people in it.

How's it going so far?

I was always wondering since you opened here how it's been going.

It's been a bit of a tough run.

Jim and all honesty, we're trying a number of things to try to see if we can get that turned around.

But I think most of it is we've got to get the people back into their offices for starters instead of working from home.

And we have to get more people visiting downtown and then uptown will be fine.

Right.

Excellent to hear.

And I know I've been there a couple of times.

So it's great and I highly recommend it.

But you bring up a good point too, right?

There's been a lot of conversation.

And this is aside from the jets.

I can just about how like having people all downtown five days a week all that can make a difference to businesses like yours.

Absolutely.

If you recall pre-COVID, people were walking around downtown.

They were dressed in suits.

They were doing their business because they were all going into the office.

Things changed during COVID.

And I think what we have to do is slowly get our way back to that kind of energy and that kind of vision downtown.

Once again, that's Doug Steven president of Wow hospitality.

He spoke with Jim Toe yesterday just after the one o'clock news.

And we would say go to the audio vault if you wanted to hear it.

But as we just mentioned, it's not entirely working.

But we so we want to ask the question today about.

Is it is it time to let go of the whole bring people back?

Or is the should we still be having that discussion?

Is the argument still there that we need people in the office more often?

Our economy is sort of built on a certain formula.

People make decisions.

It's like the underground concourse.

We've had the discussion about reopening portage in Maine.

And then the whole idea of closing the concourse.

And it's like, well hold on, that wasn't part of the discussion about closing the concourse.

Because if he asked Doug Steven about opening a restaurant in the lobby at 2.1

portage, his target audience isn't just in this one tower.

It's in the other towers at portage in Maine.

And his potential customers having easy access, not having to put on a winter jacket

to get to his restaurant for lunch, even though there are 30, 40, 50, 60, 100 feet away.

So the economy is formulated to work a certain way.

Our infrastructure has been built a certain way.

But at the same time, man, I have a hard time telling people who do really good work from home.

And I know several people who work way more from home than they do at work and get their work done.

How hard time looking those people in the eye and say, yeah, well for the good of, you need to go back to work.

And by the way, we do have asks out to several organizations like Hydro and MPI,

liquor and lotteries.

Hydro did recently announce it's moving from two days to remote days to one.

And the province currently allows employees to request two days a week to work remotely with the remaining three days to be in the office.

And according to recent stats from the province as of November last year,

3700 employees representing 30.1% of core employees work under the flexible work policy at least one day per month.

So we'll have more on this through the day.

Hey, good morning, guys.

I know how depressing and disappointing it is.

Hey, jets are not in the playoffs, but it's not bad.

It's causing a grief and the misery.

It's the weather.

My gosh, we can't figure it out.

I mean, it's just absolutely, so, so disappointing.

And these are little appetizers of spring, but we need the main course.

And we're just on getting it.

It's this whiplash back and forth and up and down.

It just wears you out.

And so it looks like another, another few more days of that, you know, with, you know, weather statements and 18 degrees today, my gosh.

And then by tomorrow you'll be having your polar police and your balaclavis on again.

Next week, Monday Tuesday, my gosh, we back into the, well, not necessarily muscle shirts and tank tops, but it will be certainly back into the warm air.

It's just this whiplash is hard to, hard to take guys.

You're in charge of all this, David.

You're the one that sends the weather our way.

Why can't you make up your mind on whether you want it to be winter or spring?

I tell you, it is really, it's almost like a dual personality out there.

And, you know, it's so typical what you see in the spring time.

It's the transition season when winter wants to stay on and, you know, summer wants to get a foothold.

So it's that kind of, but it's been going on for a long time.

I mean, we've had four weeks since the spring started.

And that has been more on the cool side than the mild side.

We've had, it's the greatest powerful weather I've ever seen with, you know, I mean, I think in those 28 days,

we had 22 where it was melting during the day, but just a little bit and then freezing at night.

And so my gosh, it's, it's, it really, and I think when I look over the long, the big picture, the North American scene,

it's really fascinating.

We saw all this cold air in Canada.

I mean, it's coming from the, from the, the territories across the prairies,

uh, into a right, right through to cross to Labrador.

So a lot of cold air sitting in Canada.

But to the south guys, they're going through record warm temperatures.

They've never seen from coast to coast such warm air.

So it's almost as if you've got these two armies, the cold air, and then the warm air.

And, um, and then you get these little systems like, uh, Alberta clippers,

Montana, Montana lows or, or Mackenzie clippers.

They come through and they're like blenders.

They kind of mix the warm and the cold.

You don't get any weather when you have cold air.

It's just cold air.

And you don't have a lot of weather when you have warm air.

It's just warm air.

But you bring the two together and you get weather wars.

And so that is why we're seeing that the cold air is never, it's not too far away.

It has never been too far away.

And the warm air is, is also not too far away.

So this is why this kind of back and forth and up and down that we're seeing.

But, you know, I could get into trouble for saying this.

But I think this kind of, until after the weekend, I think that's going to be the winter's last hurrah.

I really see that the warm air is going to take hold, going to win out.

And we're going to see from, you know, next week on, more consistent warmer temperatures,

double-digit warmer temperatures at night.

Not this where it falls down to, you know, like on the Saturday, we're talking about a high of minus two.

I mean, come on, that's 13 degrees colder than it should be.

So my sense is that it's eventually summer winds out.

And, you know, I mean, we still have a little bit of ways to go.

And I don't want to scare you with this.

But, you know, in May, I mean, my gosh, most Mays you get some kind of snow.

You can get a trace of snow or a measurable amount, but normally it's what nature brings.

You can also take it away.

But, guys, I got some good news for you.

I got right out of the hoppers this morning from the supercomputer in Montreal.

It is just fresh. It's hot in my hands.

It is showing what the weather is looking like for Manitoba for May, June, and July.

And it's showing warmer than normal across the entire province.

So from north to south, it's going to be warmer than normal.

So that's the where we're headed.

But we just have a little bit of sort of back and forth and up and down to get to that point.

But, you know, this could vary.

You know, the weather you're cursing now, guys, could be the weather you're blessing later on.

I mean, the rain, the snow, the cold, going to keep forest fires at bay,

and provide some moisture for growers in that.

So when we get to that warm air, you'll think, oh my gosh, thank God we didn't have a warm spring

because we'd have wildfires and smoke all over the place.

So I think there's some good news in that kind of disappointing news, too.

Okay. Well, that's exciting.

There's something to look forward to for May, June, July.

Just before we let you go, David, we only got about a minute left here.

But this system that's approaching tonight, so for Winnipeg specifically,

it looks like just based on the forecast that we were more likely to see freezing rain versus the snow.

Yes. I mean, it's very touchable with freezing rain.

It's a really, you might get just a couple of moments of it,

but it's there in the forecast. It's an important thing that we have to mention.

It's a risk, but certainly we're going to see, for example, up in Flint,

in La Pau, they're going to see, you know, 15, 20 centimeters of snow.

But because you're in the warmer air again, close to what you see that warm air is the south,

then it's a really kind of an intermediate stage where you could get the rain, the freezing rain,

or the snow, but a little bit of freezing rain.

And then when the cold air really comes in from the west, come Thursday night Friday,

then it'll only be the white stuff that you get, maybe five to ten centimeters,

but then a little cold, and then guys it's going to warm up.

And I think it's going to stay that way come next weekend.

Yes, and as we wind down to the seasons end tomorrow night,

San Jose Sharks in town to face the Jets.

We welcome John Shannon, our hockey insider contributor to our pre-imposed game coverage

amongst other responsibilities in John.

The Jets, obviously the wheels have sort of fallen off here,

maybe as much by design last night and the night before in Vegas.

But obviously the game Saturday against Philadelphia was a shock to a lot of fans.

We'll move on from that just by asking.

The Jets were one of the best teams in the league since the Olympic break,

as good as they were at the end of the day as the standings justice.

Oh, I think so, Greg.

I think when you, you know, in the months of November and December,

when you win seven of 27,

that's where you're going to say the season was lost.

And, you know, I think there might be a,

there might be a desire to look at what happens since the Olympics and say,

yeah, you know, this is the team that we had, but, you know,

you always have to be wary of fool's gold.

And wonder that, you know, who were they playing?

Yes, they did play well at times, but there was still some inconsistency.

And you're right.

I mean, Saturday night was as much as anything after how well they played

at certain points since the Olympics.

That was a real slap in the face.

And it might be a reality check for a lot of things that suggest, you know,

it all is not right and don't stand pat and get to October next year

or late September when the season starts next year.

And think that perhaps there needs to be a little bit of change made on this roster.

So last night, Rick bonus called out his players for their efforts down the stretch.

He did the same to the Jets in 2023 after they got bounced from the playoffs in five games.

So how different is the culture in Winnipeg now versus two or three years ago?

Well, I do think it's different.

I do think that what Rick did in his tenure and what Scott has done in his tenure

has created a much better culture.

You know, Mark Chipman likes to call it the family.

I think that there is a lot different.

I mean, let's remember, even prior to bonus with the with the Maurice era

and then that strange time when Dave Lowry was coaching as well, you know,

was the players in the end at their end of season press conferences guys like Kyle Conner

talked about culture change being needed.

So the players understood exactly what had to happen and when it needed to happen.

And so I think that a guy like bonus coming into Winnipeg changed a lot and created more accountability.

And to your point, Rhett, he's trying to do that albeit in a much different environment in Columbus.

He's trying to do the same thing in Columbus.

And I couldn't help but think in watching Rick last night.

That's exactly what we saw with that press conference in Las Vegas after losing in five games.

This is going to be a tough question to ask.

It might be easy to answer, but I'll ask it anyway.

Will Kevin Shovel Day of be the one in charge of crafting next year's roster?

I think so.

Should he be?

Well, now that's a different question.

My answer is that one of the things that has always been a strength of this franchise is loyalty.

I think that when we talk about the core of this hockey club, Shaftesley Conner, hella Bukborecy, Pionk, who put those guys together?

Who was the architect of what happens?

I believe after the president's trophy year that we saw last season and the foundation that was crumbling this year at times.

I think that Kevin deserves that opportunity.

I really do. I think he deserves a chance to look at this roster.

But here's the thing, Rick.

They can't stand past.

There are times within an organization's development that you have to look at the roster at the core and say we need to make some changes.

The mitigating factor in Winnipeg is there has always been a belief that we have to be loyal to our core because we're worried that they're not going to stay or we can't acquire replacements to the core for a myriad of reasons.

A, it's Winnipeg. B, it's a small market. You know, there are C, it's Canada.

That's something that the Jets have addressed for a long period of time.

And I think has done a really good job at doing that of trying to work around all of those issues.

I think Kevin now needs to be put in a position and I'm sure he will be. Say, okay, yeah, you're right. You've done a great job at times.

But now you have to dig deep. You have to show loyalty to the organization and not necessarily loyalty to some of the veteran players and make some change and find a way in using those veteran players as currency and finding a way to improve the roster with a couple of trades.

And then reworking through the draft because they, you know, I think we've seen a couple of players finally break through that can contribute like Brad Lambert.

Can he contribute long term? The trade they made with Buffalo, Zach Rosene. Seems to be making a difference. Can he contribute?

I think that so I think there's there's part of it that says I think Kevin deserves one more opportunity.

So is that I was I listened to you is. Is that where the change comes from is is with the core?

That's what I would do. Yeah. That's what I would do. I would look at those.

And you you can define how big the core is. You look at those six to eight players and say, okay, where do we have strength in our young guys?

And where do we have the ability to move a veteran player that has an attractive contract to other teams?

A guy that has some some some really good years left so that we can get a couple of young pieces back.

And then give it one more try. This is this is an important season coming up for the jets on so many levels.

You know, as good as the team was a year ago, they didn't sell out every game.

As good as the team was supposed to be this year, they I think they only had eight sell outs.

So there's a lot of pressure not just on the ice to win, but there's a lot of pressure off the ice to win.

So this year coming up, there is going to be a ton of accountability for everyone in the organization.

Whether it be in the marketing department, whether it be the players, whether it be in hockey operations, whether it be an ownership to make sure that the one effect gents are pointed in the right direction.

Not to mention the increasing salary cap this year and over the next several years, which could be a real challenge for a lot of teams.

Right. You bring up a really good point. The salary cap is not one that you some teams can afford to go to that level.

Some teams will have an internal cap. The jets may be one of those teams that has an internal cap as opposed to the numbers that the collective bargaining agreement, the league and the players association have agreed to.

Please and our good friend is Shandra Kremsky joins us now founder of third and bird Shandra how many how many markets is this now or have you lost count.

I lost count but the only reminder I have is I started this when my kid was one and she's 19 now.

That's a reminder boy no kidding well that that is something else so already graduated from high school or graduating this year already graduated from high school so very humbling no question.

Look this is a popular event for thousands of of Manitobans why do you think you've connected so strongly what do you think your your makers continue to make a mark with with Manitobans.

I think that was a great question I think the reason why just keeps connecting is people in Manitoba really like rooting and supporting for local and that like mom and pop shop.

I think that everyone here is really intentional with wanting to source out that new and cool thing and you know what makes you know certain areas of the city hip and fun.

It's those restaurants that are one of a kind or those bakeries are one of a kind and I think that's why so many people come out to third and bird because they're discovering these new up and coming small businesses that soon or hopefully will open up you know a shop you know in an area of town near you.

And you probably you typically have well over a hundred vendors at this event yes.

Yes we have over 170 market okay and then it's the location red river exhibition place the location is also been part of the evolution of the market tell

how long have you been at the red river no.

I believe we moved into red river in 2020 and we've prior to that we were in the iconic bay downtown which was also such a fun experience to to be in such a historic building.

But yeah red river is a great location there is ample parking it's free the layout is you know accessible to to all people to come shop there so it's a great location for us.

I know that Jackie and I were out at the parade of homes a couple maybe about four Sundays ago and the weather had turned it was that one last weekend I think that we had in January February the sun was shining and you didn't have to wear a big heavy coat.

Everywhere and it looks like you know it might be a little a little wintery on the weekend but people are sort of champion at the bit for spring and to get out and and start seeing new things yeah.

Absolutely and you know what we always joke within our team that it wouldn't be a third and bird spring market if we didn't have like some insane weather system that would blow in.

So this is very on brand with mother nature so we welcome it because this happens every spring and you know what the shoppers show up with the biggest smiles the cutest little outfits and they're ready to have a good time because we got the music pumping we got the sip and shop bar ready to go.

The vendors have you know all their product and you know you just kind of forget what's going on outside and you walk in and like you're in you know having this amazing experience and it's it's a ton of fun.

And before we let you go chandra and that you just nailed it mean that one of the reasons why I enjoy going to the market when I can make it is it's not you're not just going shopping it's it's like a party like a shopping party it's truly a unique experience it's a lot of fun and it's very easy to get swept up in the the local and uniqueness of it all.

But in terms of if people want to go and we've got tickets to give away but there are like the it is a ticketed event right.

Our guest is a Winnipeg based empowerment speaker thought leadership experts and contributing co author in the anthology voices of the 21st century unstoppable women standing strong on June 5th.

Having that work home in a very tangible way we want to tell you about the inaugural savvy women's empowerment summit taking place at the Manitoba Club we welcome to the start Samantha savvy hi Samantha.

Hello thank you so much for having me it's great to see you and it's great to have you in our studio this morning can we just start with your what I'm assuming is your mantra a savvy shift a path back to who you were before and I love this next part.

Before the world told you who to be yes well that is kind of the foundation of my brand and it is really based on my own personal lived experience and so my brand is savvy and that comes from my transformation of going from Samantha into savvy as I became a international DJ.

And so now my goal with this empowerment summit is to empower other women to rise up and to really discover who they are and let that come out in this particular instance it's through business because I also have a background in.

In business in corporate real estate commercial real estate and so I also have that experience and I want to empower other women to really pursue their passions and their dreams while also successfully building their own businesses and the freedom that comes from that.

Okay so we will learn more about the summit in a moment but I we need to share some of the details of your DJ story because we've just gotten kind of a glimpse of it but it sounds like you've had a remarkably successful and I would imagine super fun career in that field so how did you get started in being a DJ.

Well I started off as a dancer actually in the Latin dance scene the salsa scene here in Winnipeg so I actually am a professionally trained salsa and bachata dancer and then through my experiences in salsa bachata I discovered this new dance called Kizumba and the music actually really spoke to me more before I started.

You know becoming into into the dance because I was training and competing so intensely in the salsa side of things so I was kind of like cheating on salsa with Kizumba and the music and so then when COVID hit and everything kind of got shut down so there was no performing no competing anymore and so that was when I decided okay I'm going to switch over to this dance called Kizumba and start training and so I found some practice partners and I was able to train in that.

And then as I realized that we really don't have a lot of DJs in this genre of music there's maybe three DJs in all of Western Canada and we didn't have one I was living in Calgary at the time and so we didn't have a DJ there and so I was like you know what I'm going to try this and so I bought my first little baby controller and I just let it sit on my desk for like six months or something.

Like that and every once in a while I would go up to it and I would like try turning the knobs and you know experimenting a little bit and I took a course online course or whatever to learn about the software because it's not just about the hardware it's a software too.

And then it went from there and people kind of discovered that I was that I was DJing and so I started getting hired by first like local events happening in Calgary

and then smaller events happening in Canada as things started opening up again and then I eventually started posting my sets online and there was an organizer that I had connected with in Paris who I had connected with on Facebook and when he saw me starting to post my sets online and he reached out and he said I didn't know you were DJing and I said yeah you know I'm just starting to see where it goes or whatever.

And he's like well you know I have this festival coming up in the summer and he's like if you want you can come and play a couple of sets if you're here and I was like okay.

I'll make sure I'm in the neighborhood.

I might be around.

Yeah I might be in Paris at that time I don't know.

So anyways I ended up playing my first festival in Paris in the summer of 2023 and then I just kind of started making connections from there and so it's kind of expanded.

So I'm more interested in the six months that that equipment sat on your desk because you're an accomplished real estate professional you have your MBA.

I've only known you for about 20 minutes but I can tell you're very driven.

What is it that kept you from something that is obviously become your passion in life?

What voices in your head were saying no you're not allowed to go down that road or was it something else?

I think you know and this is again part of my journey and that I want to help people and you know women in particular

because I think a women often kind of downplay what they're capable of and so I like for me it was like the voice in my head is like what are you doing?

Why are you trying to be a decent?

But was that your voice or was that your mom's voice or the collective them?

No I think it was just like it was like the insecurities and doubt within myself potentially and so for me it was like part of becoming savvy

was getting over those fears getting over those hurdles and it was also like interestingly enough it was even though I was practicing to an empty room right?

Like it was embarrassment of myself you know or like like I don't want to fail myself right and so it's also learning about how to overcome the fears of failure for yourself.

Not necessarily the external world but it's like your internal world right?

So the event is happening Friday June 5th at the Manitoba Club 8 30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's a half day conference for women entrepreneurs professionals and leaders in Winnipeg and Manitoba.

So what's going to be going on on June 5th?

Yes so June 5th I'm really really excited about this so I was inspired actually because I went to an event in Vancouver and when I went there and everyone was like you came from Winnipeg for this and I thought

like oh why don't I bring this back home you know like so I was really inspired by the event that happened in Vancouver and so it's three fireside chat style panels.

And so I also have a podcast online actually and so it's kind of going to be like a podcast interview with experts and so the three topics to discuss are kind of what I thought

what are women probably struggling with right now. So number one obviously the big topic is AI in the workplace and so I wanted to talk about this because I'm learning about AI I actually signed up for a mastery course to learn about all the different things

and I think you know it's moving so fast and it's really hard to keep up with it all the time and so I wanted to go over like how can women capitalize on this in their business so that they can create

more efficiencies more profits within the business and also not be afraid to use it because I think there's a lot of hesitancy about incorporating into the business in ethical ways

in authentic ways right because one of the things about AI is that you want to make sure that you're still remaining authentic and true to you.

Well it's either an opportunity or a threat. It's one or the other yeah and I think the thing with AI is that like you can't stop it at this point you know so you have to learn how to harness it and learn how to use it

right so that's what I wanted to talk about for the first panel the second panel is funding and financing for women entrepreneurs

because I'm not sure of the actual statistics but I know that the like the number number but I know that women are getting less financing, less grants, less government help than men

and so it's about like seeking out those opportunities like where do you even go to get the proper financing, get the equity, get the investment you know get the angel investors on board.

I'm really excited about this panel actually I have we Mb so the president of we Mb is coming to discuss so they are specifically helping women entrepreneurs in Manitoba

and then I also have TD her name is Ala she's the regional manager for the prairies for the TD women in entrepreneurship

and so they focus specifically on female entrepreneurs and then I also have Joel Foster coming in who runs like angel investors and for I don't think it's female specific but she's obviously in that space

I was at the ramp up weekend I was lucky enough to MC the ramp up weekend for Joel on the weekend so basically it's find your kazamba, find your own kazamba, how can people get involved because times are against us.
