You thought about wanting to be a better quarterback, but mechanically, was there anything that you've kind of worked on these last few months?

2:01Yeah, you know, my thumbs getting a little healthier so I can creep the ball better. So yeah, getting back to some more over-the-top stuff, let's sidearm them. That all plays in with them, and I'm not making an excuse, but that's the truth I had. You know, adapted a little bit. But yeah, I liked some old videos, and it's more closer to the ear, so my dad always told me to keep the ball closer to the ear, you know, that was like really young. Same, same. So yeah. I like same, same. We are The Morning Animals. That was OU quarterback John Mateer, on 98.1 FM, WWLST Sports Ample. So I think the things he said, people wanted to hear, Carrie, like back to the old throwing motion. Hand feels good. That they never saw. I mean, before the entry, I think he had a decent throwing motion. I mean, look, he throws off platform, I mean, that's, you know, the whole...

3:06He had, I mean, I feel like a crazy person. Please be. Because if we continue, you're here in the right place for that. And the middle of the season, like, in effect, is throwing. Like... John, everyone's, oh, he jumps in the air when he throws the ball, oh my God. Like, no, he just, he was trying to play through a surgery and he really wasn't ready, but he was still their best option. It's just like, can we just let the guy have a healthy season and stop putting it? I'll say this, I think John Mateer's a guy that feels, you know, at least, and we've seen all, since the transfer portal opened, I have with Dylan Gabriel, happen with Jackson Arnold as a freshman, but like... Baker may feel and Kyler Murray made playing chord, but in Jalen Hurts too. I mean, I think all the stuff he went through before he got to OU, like... There's a lot of pressure to play chord back at Oklahoma. And at times, early, Dylan Gabriel didn't handle it.

4:08And I saw John Mateer go through a lot of the same stuff last year. And it's like, we get fixated on this throwing motion thing, and yeah, he does not, you know, there are times where you would like to see him be more conventional, but you could have said that about Baker or Kyler or even Jalen, but like... If you win, you win, and that's all that matters. And they went to the college football playoff last year, and I think everybody looks at the, you know, looks at some of the throws and some of the stuff that happened and balls batted down with a line of scrimmage and you're like, well, they wouldn't have thrown it aside on it when it got batted down. Baker Mayfield gets a lot of, still to the state, gets a lot of passes batted down. And he didn't college in Kyler, obviously, you know, even smaller. I think it's good that he's, you know, doing this, but I almost feel like he's being forced into being like, oh, the problems last year were all about my throwing motion. No, it wasn't. The problems last year, or that you had major hand surgery in the middle of the freaking

5:11season. Like, let's take a step, like, why can nobody admit that? That drives me insane. Who's arguing the point that it's not, I mean, that it's not harder to throw a football with a broken thumb than it is when your thumb is just fine. Who's arguing that point? Everyone that is, to me, it's everyone that is obsessed with this whole throwing motion thing. Yeah, and they should, I mean, listen, that was something that it was obviously noticeable. I think the bigger picture with Mattir was, yeah, the biggest thing is, I mean, if you asked J.W. He had the same surgeon, if you asked him to rush back and play this year, do you think we'd be sitting here saying, oh, what a great year he's having. No. Well, he even struggled when he first got back and he said, he said, I'm trying to recreate my shot. No, right. And he said the extra time helped him once he was hurt the first time. Yeah. I think this was his wrist. I mean, I think we all know, I think we've all thrown a football, I mean, Phil, I don't know. Yeah.

6:12But maybe a nerve football, whether it was a nerve or whatever, you know how big a part of your thumb is and throwing a football is not a small object. You can't grip a foot bar correctly with a busted thumb. You have to find a way around it and if supporting it and a throwing motion is by dropping your elbow a little bit, because it's easier to hold onto it, the jumping part is the way. I'm concerned about flying in the air and trying to throw it. I mean, throwing a pick six decision making was a bigger problem. That's what I'm trying to say. Thank you. Not, not, you know, being able to get through your reads and see a guy that was open, like that's nothing to do with throwing motion. He's picked great before the pick six against Alabama and the playoff game is was the killer. I mean, it killed them and that was not a throwing motion thing. That was a man that was a terrible throw thing. But like, is it our way of just like glossing over the fact that he has other issues every quarterback has some issues. I mean, even, you know, I think Fernando Mendoza is probably the only quarterback where

7:15nobody's like, oh, yeah, he's got no issues. Like he's, he had the perfect year, you know, he's going to be the number one pick, but even Tyson Simpson, like he's probably the second best or maybe, you know, in the draft yet. He'll be the second best. But like, you look at, he was great. He threw one interception and then he played OU and they got me and then it was all about his questioning everything about it. Listen, add on top of trying to recreate your throwing motion when you can't properly grip a football. But add on top of that, you had no protection all year long in the offensive line. He's running for his life. He has to run the football, protect his hands while running a football. And also the fact that he had no running game to compliment the throwing game. I'd say it's more the running game than the offensive. Yeah, we saw what a bad offensive line was when Jackson Arnold was a court. That was not a bad offensive. I think it got better. It was bad at the beginning, but got better and better and better. They just didn't have a good running back. They did have a healthy running back when they have the defense have the ability to just tee off. And not respect the running backs at all. The defense has had the ability to defend them in a way that if you have some tight

8:16ends, you can block. If you can run the football, it's just he was up against a lot of things with that offense last year. He was the running game. Yeah. Absolutely. 100% was. And he was banged up. I mean, you have to protect your hand while you're running, too. It was pretty clear for the Michigan game, you know, just running wise. He wasn't the same guy until later in the season. Yeah. I would run with the football against those monsters out there with a bust at hand. That can't be your favorite day. So he had to change everything about playing the game of football when he came back from the bust. But listen, I give the kid a lot of credit for coming back and gutting it out and they got to a playoff last year. The defense was fantastic, but he got to a playoff and he was playing okay until he threw a big six and you know, it just went the other way for him. But listen, Dylan Gabriel wasn't in year one, wasn't Dylan Gabriel in year two. He's pretty good. I mean, he's good. He made some plays, but he got better. So you just thinking, I want, I think John Matier, another year in the offense, another year now having some cup more, everybody involves going to have a lot more confidence in the offensive line. Now with the tight ends, all those kinds of things growing together, I think you'll see

9:18his game grow as well. And I mean, like he's not a dummy. He was asked last night, like, you know, how difficult was it to come back, you know, make the decision to stay. He's like, it wasn't hard at all. I did have a very good year. I need to be a lot better quarterback. All the things that, you know, when the rumors were out there, just the people freaking out out there online about like, oh, the quarterback class isn't any good, John Matier could go, you know, because, you know, we're here in like his agents, like trying to convince him that it's a good time to go, like, no, he was sitting there like the rest of us. Like, I had a bad year. I had surgery in the middle of it. I didn't look good. My tape's not good. I need to come back and prove to the NFL that I can be, you know, a top quarterback in, you know, in college football. So he was thinking the same things that everybody else with the level head was thinking. And he was going to make a lot of money coming back and doing it. Yeah, but I'll say this. I think he gave up money to help get people. This segment has been so powerful. Yeah. I think we need to extend it into the next segment.

10:18Yeah. It's actually stopped sucking popcorn out of his teeth. Yeah. It was just, this is it. But you get it. We're going to finally come out. Yeah. Football to see if he has thumbs. Yeah. Yeah. Do we not have a football just in the office? We don't. Yeah. Yeah. Football at my office. A football helmet isn't going to prove the point. But I was looking for his football. That's autographed. Do we have that one? I don't know if I could throw it perfect. I don't think I could throw it perfect. I know that. I told someone that story the other day, Spinoza, about your bladder, uh, football. Yeah. My football had a bladder infection. They could believe that that happened to you. Yeah. I mean, just unbelievable. Hey, by the way, not at Sam Bradford's around town.
