OpenAI Shuts Down Sora AI Video Generator

The company made the announcement on Tuesday, ending the tool just six months after launching a popular standalone app. Users could create and share realistic short videos there, and it quickly hit number one on Apple's App Store. Sora first went public in late 2024, gaining huge buzz with Sora 2 in the app last September. People made fun clips like animals driving, or celebrities in wild scenarios. But it also drew heat for harmful content, including violence, racism, defects, and copyright issues. The company thanked creators for building a community around Sora and acknowledged the disappointment. Just a day earlier, OpenAI posted about safety improvements, like blocks on sexual material, terrorist content, and self-harm promotion, especially for teens. This comes right after a three-year partnership with Disney, letting users generate videos with over 200 licensed characters from Marvel. Pixar and Star Wars. Disney confirmed they're ending the deal too.
