Only Weird Games 9/10: Patrick Mahomes is Back and Ready for Week 1

0:00We were waiting a long time for the actual arrival of the NFL season. And look, you know, for the Seahawks last night, it started horribly. You thought maybe your quarterback was on the brink of being out the rest of the season. And if you're the Patriots, you might be thinking, oh, well, I was on the brink of believing in my team's quarterback. And now you're second guessing some things. Look, friends, here's something that I can tell you for a guarantee. You can have a great Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and man, are we going to have a big ol' pile of red zone on Sunday? If nothing else, you can put your anxieties away until even just during the work day on Monday, then at that point, I'll bet you're off. Coming up, the latest episode of Only Weird Games. 1:03The NFL is back. The Chiefs are nearly back. We're all here with you on Only Weird Games. Joshua Brisco, Seth Kaiser, and Nate Taylor. Fellas, I don't want to miss lead the audience. I can't say honestly that I'm getting a real first week of NFL electricity from either of you guys today. Do I need to try to crank it up to three times the energy level or do I need to try to come down and have a nice chill Thursday with you? I can be here for you now. I had to copy and paste some stuff, and because I'm 41 years old, it's difficult for me to engage with technology. And so I was just copying and pasting Patrick Maholam's Film Review Summary numbers from 2018, from 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 into the Patrick Maholam's 2025 Film Review Summary. So I can compare all of those numbers together for purposes of this podcast because you guys I have not published the Patrick Maholam's 2025 Film Review Summary. I'm posting on the eve of the season.

2:04It actually I think kind of works out. Not something I meant to do. Now I've got all of that information and I have I have reviewed four games in the last 24 hours. I have put all the numbers together. I've done the averages and I've actually come away with a genuine like, oh, kind of take away. But so I was doing all that and I cannot multitask. I'm told it's the ADHD, which I'm not trying to actually have and honestly wait too many people self diagnosed, but I'm here now and I'm ready. Does that count as a long road to a short thought? Probably not. Hey, I'll go ahead right now and I'll tell you I got it laminated again this year. Yes. I've got the set side. So my call to action for you, the only weird games, voyures feel free to shout out as it happens. We can't let I'm immune to this, but we can't let Seth or Nate get to in their head about fulfilling the bingo card. It doesn't work as a self-fulfilling prophecy. I truly, sometimes I think I truly forget that we live in a society that says, sure, much of our country is led by capitalism and by agreed for more for 30 downsides for all consuming a cash grab after cash grab in a society that tells you what to buy, win to buy it, how to buy it. But there's a beacon of hope for 18 Sundays in the fall and winter retail advertising to get the fuck out the way. Whoa, because I got as an F bomb on the bingo card. So that you can I got hours being exasperated with an F bomb on the bingo card. No, I got I got hours of ball to watch.

5:16We don't need commercials and I'm sure someone's already saying, well, Nate, they kind of put commercials on the side. That ain't where my eyes are. No, not this Sunday, not next Sunday, ball watching. You heard it from Nate Taylor first advertising doesn't actually work. That's not that's not how look. Hey, Seth, far be it for me to defend Nate's word choice in the first five minutes of the show. That's not exactly what he said. Welcome to the scene. Josh first, he also believes advertising doesn't work. I definitely didn't say that. Look now, now, now, Martha wants to sell me something before game. Hey, listen, but once that ball is kicked out, get out, clear out, clear it out. Okay. And yes, we're about to get one of the true like, just one of the, you know, I'm going to save it mostly for the end. We all know this.

6:16We all know who I am. And I'm not afraid to tell you who I am because I know who I am. I know who I am. All right. But there's that, there's that, there's that brief, thin diagram and it's starting, it's starting last night. And it's going to go all the way from something. You get to tell me I get to snort cocaine on Sunday. And there's an American man playing for the US Open Championship. Oh, that might as well be fit and all. I mean, you, again, do not aimlessly awesome thing. Nate, you got to think sometimes, man, you got to, that's got a, that's not, that's not. It's not like Nate endorses fit and all on the bingo car because I think even Randy was like, they're not going to. You know how you know, we finally reached a point of no return when I, the prosecutor, I'm like, and I, the heathen, I'm like, all right, fine. All right. Well, I mean, we've all, we've all endorsed cocaine on this program.

7:17No, we have it. But at the same time, my date, we get to watch tennis and football for the next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, that's five days. I, I too am very excited for week one, Josh. Does that count as no matter how good the chiefs are, Nate would rather be at Wimbledon? Do you think that's, I think that's a stretch. I think it might be as like a dress. This might be just, just, just, I mean, the best they are all year. You never know. Maybe zero and zero is as good as it gets. We don't know yet. Um, hopefully not. But I think that's definitely fair because we all know that is what he'd rather be doing. I, I'm so excited. I genuinely, I know primetime games can be difficult at times. Oh, yeah. It's a consider to render. And so I, I, I know that primetime games are always the easiest to cover or write about. So that'll be a little bit tough, um, you know, Monday night into a Tuesday, all that

8:19fun stuff. Better than a tennis game. The tennis match that starts at midnight. It really is fun to just sit at home on Sunday and stress free, watch red zone. Can't wait. It's incredible. Yeah. So I, I'm excited. I could not. I, we, we've already gotten to see a quarterback that had all the hype coming into the season throw a devastatingly past. So crispy. Well, according to Bill's fans, it doesn't matter how ugly just one play was if he played well, the rest of the game, then you can't possibly blame Drake. May. This is, look, I'm not making these rules up. By the way, we're in season now. So I'm doing this. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. According to Bill's fans, your quarterback could turn it over four or five times in a game. But if you played well, the rest of the time, it's everyone else's fault. The amount of, and I'm not a Sean McDermott apologist, the amount of anti Sean McDermott and pro Joe Brady propaganda that's been put out this summer has been just like, oh, thank

9:24God. Josh Allen doesn't have this albatross. This, this, this hanging weight dragging him down this roster that every year people think is a top five roster that's now been destroyed and look, by the way, Josh is an incredible quarter. He's so good at football. I love watching him play. So this is nothing to do with how good I think he is. But that to me, Drake, Nathan, that was the first thing I thought. I was like, I bet Bill's fans think he might have played well, but that's the game, though. That was it. You could tell he was mad at himself afterward too. So we got our first quarterback angry with himself afterward. We got our first backup coming in and making just a couple throws because it's all you need to do. If you play for the buzzer, buzz machine, the meat grinder that is the sea hawks. And so I'm just like, I'm excited for all of it because Patrick Mahomes, Place Football on Monday, I know people are worried. I know the stink of last season, you know, got the people.

10:24But one thing that has set Mahomes over for years. And last year, because of the way it went, people forget this for years. It was always some new guy was the new guy. Travis Kelsey's been dealing with this for years, right? Remember when Mark Andrews was maybe better than Travis Kelsey, because I do like it's been wonderful. It's been glorious year after year. And I don't remember who it was I was talking to. It was someone from my fan base that was just like talking about how I think it was a bills fan was like, oh, you know, bills fans are in cheese fans heads. And I was like, you don't understand like I like basically had to have like you ever you see the Lego Batman movie or Batman tells the Joker that he just doesn't mean that much to him. I felt kind of bad. I was like, you don't understand like Josh Allen might be the strongest challenger so far. But we've seen this over and over when it wasn't it be it's been quarterback after quarterback who might be my homes is equal. And then they throw a god awful pick on opening day and everyone comes crashing down to

11:28earth. Now my homes, you know, had a rough year last year in a lot of ways. So who knows maybe he's finally mortal at 30. But yeah, Jaylen Hertz a ratio. Thank you, Pastor. If we've had to do this so much. I had to tell the I was like, this is just the latest in a long line of conversations. And who knows maybe this year, it'll be different. Every tells us it won't be, but we'll see. And I'm so excited from a home is having opportunity against a great defense. A defense that has given them problems schematically for years partly because of personnel stuff. He's got a chance to genuinely just seize the narrative again. And I'm so excited about it. But Seth, we might come back here on Tuesday in the world might be ready to crown bones on one game. They might. Who knows. They're ready to crown him on one season with a ton of wins where the defense came up. Like, you know, 15 points or so. And you know what?

12:28Hey, he executed Sean Payton's offense. Drew for a ton of touchdowns. Now if you think Sean Payton isn't aware of how important it is to have his quarterback throw the ball when it's, you know, first and goal from the one and pump up those touchdown numbers, you do not understand Sean Payton at all or how any of this discourse works. So I'm excited. I want the Broncos to be great. I'm just, I'm sorry. I've taken this incredibly. I do. I want the Broncos to be great. I would have been less surprised if you would have matched Nate's F bomb. What are you talking about? You want the Broncos to be great. I want the Broncos to be great. So that way it is that much sweeter because nothing's worse than beaten down fan bases and beaten down opponents. That's the worst thing that going six and 11 is worse than that. Yeah. You know, it's just the Raiders has been kind of fun. I've enjoyed the Raiders the last decade because they've just sort of been down there, kind of in the muck in the mire. I don't know the Broncos to be good. I want one of my things. I have two true sports hatreds left in my life and it belongs to the Boston Red Sox and

13:29the Denver Broncos. And I even explain. I completely agree. I completely want to be on 17 every year for the rest of the time. It would only make me happier every year concurrently. It, but you got to remember you can't snatch the light out of their eyes if there's no light. It's suffocated out of them though. And it is that's why every year happening to me over the last few years on this podcast. You want to know what's been so fun about the chiefs snuffing the bills from the playoffs every year because they have hope. I'm sorry. You know what? You're a great fan base, but it's kind of fun. It's kind of fun. It's kind of fun. But losing is worse than beating a bad team in my opinion. We agree. But I'm not saying it would be fun to lose to them. I'm saying before that nothing was worse than beating down a bad team, I think. And we've been asking the chiefs to do that for like five seasons. I don't know. Okay. Yeah, I know you haven't seen it happen in a long because the Bears game with Taylor Swift and attendance was the last time that we saw that actually happen. And what I promise you, that was fun. You just forgot how fun it was.

14:30You know, they've won some games by a lot of points, you know, like they, they destroyed, they beat the Raiders like a hundred billion to nothing last year. You're bringing a real, you're bringing a real football doesn't start till Thanksgiving energy to this episode. And I don't like it. By the way, Drake may finish over four with three interceptions on deep passes of 20 or more air yards last night. He's that happy. I just think that stat is kind of incredible. Wow. So another challenger is facing a rough road. We'll see what my home does. Okay. Let's let's let's talk a little bit about what it's going to look like on Monday night. We got the injury updates from handy read today. No practice for either Josh Simmons or Shemari Connor. Obviously you're starting left tackle and one of your starting safeties. A full participation for everyone else on the roster on the active roster, I should say, including Astrange Aladi. So that's something to note as things stand right now. He should be there in the rotation. If practice today was any indicator, it seems like as conversations went on with Andy

15:31Read and Patrick Mahomes in particular today. Nobody said Kallil Benson wasn't starting at left tackle. And Mahomes didn't want to like, you know, announce the lineup. But obviously Andy didn't either. But Nate, you're takeaways on the presser front there, particularly regarding Josh Simmons and Shemari Connor knowing this is the last episode we'll do before the game. Yeah. This tells us that unless something drastically changes, which is rare, but it does occur. If the two are going to be without Shemari Connor and they are likely to be without Josh Simmons, it's interesting to know that Patrick Mahomes is a full participant. I thought, you know, because that has been the case for all the training camp. So again, he is just one day closer to, you know, completing his mission to be the starter and to play without, from what he says today without any limitations, are significant limitations coming back from the ACL and LCL rehab and recovery to play.

16:35You know, I have two thoughts on the left tackle, especially. It appears to me that the chiefs are, you know, trying their best not to tell you what's going to happen to hold these cards until Monday. It was fascinating to know today that as this is officially week one, reporters are now allowed into the chiefs locked into the chiefs locker room at their training facility. So instead of just, hey, here are the three to four guys that bring to the podium or to the tent, we can now, you know, actively seek to have conversations with guys in the locker room. So it was pretty clear today. I don't know if this is part of the plan. I'm just saying this is what occurred. We didn't get a chance really talk to any offensive lineman today. So they are clearly in meetings or clearly in game prep mode. It's hard to know if we're going to get a chance to talk to Kalil Benson based on my understanding

17:38ahead of Monday's gang because it appears that he's going to make his NFL debut. We just don't know if it's at left or right tackle. I think all three of us agree if it was up to us. We had any sway in the coaching staff room ahead of kickoff that we would suggest that Kalil Benson should be a right tackle, which is where he was for the majority of training camp. And that's what the chiefs have sort of prepared him for in the event that he would be needed this season. Obviously, you can't foresee that your left tackle is going to have what appears to be a significant injury enough to miss the first game of the season. But Jalen Moore, as we all know, has pretty good extensive experience at left tackle as a spot starter. This is a chance for someone to be the spot starter for Monday's game with Patrick Mahomes coming back from the most significant injury of his career. And we did not really get a chance to glean much on practice because I kicked this out extremely early. And we didn't get a chance to really talk to anybody on the office of wine to see if

18:41we could sort of get a better understanding of what the team is coming up with in terms of his preparation in this game week. Now, by rule, we are allowed 45 minutes of access inside the chiefs locker room. That's questions to work on things ahead of time to try to set up interviews and to get a vibe, a feel of the team, right? At 1229, the last minute of the 45 minutes that were available to us as reporters. Walked into the locker room. Josh said it's, and you know what? That was the most fascinating 30 seconds kind of up my day. Because Josh Simmons, you know, I gotta say, clearly had been going through some

19:48form of workout rehab, conditioning. I don't know for sure. Didn't get to ask him. It was the last minute of our availability inside the locker room. But he worked up a pretty good sweat. Looks pretty, you know, it was just fascinating to me that like we have not seen Josh Simmons in the facility or at practice since he, you know, had his initial injury, which was the practice after the preseason opener. So we're now going into like week four of him being, you know, unable to practice. But at least he was in the facility. He appears to be going through some part of his rehab, of his treatment. I know some guys could take son as, but like he's got to get to the point where he can do some conditioning based on my understanding before you obviously have to return to football activity. So pretty good sign. Lucky Thomas, how much sweat we talking?

20:50A lot of sweat, my boy. A lot. So potentially a positive sign. But for people who are not sure where we are in the Josh Simmons of it all, I can at least tell you like I've seen him today. He's in the facility. It's largely what has been told to me by most people in the organization that he is going through, you know, the treatment process. And he and trying to understand how much of the, how much of the back can you, you know, get ready for the season? How much of this is trying to limit and reduce the pain? It was pretty, it was pretty nice. It was like, hey, he could have come out ladies and gentlemen at 1231. And I wouldn't have seen him. But he came out at 1229. So I don't know. Back injuries are hard to glean from because he's walking just fine. He appears to be going through. I thought he, like, this is just me now, but I thought he was going through some conditioning

21:51work. You might want to do something before the guys go out to practice because we're not there. You know, you may have watched practice with his teammates, which would have been another positive sign, but we were kicked out pretty early on. Great question by Stephen. Is it Francis Tiafell at the US Open Sweat? Now I don't know if you know this Seth, but he goes through about 20 of his kick shirts in a match. And I think the last match was for our 38 minutes. Clearly had to go through about 20, 20 different, you know, breathable workout shirts. That is his 20. 20. I was going to cut you off of the break, but this is actually fascinating. And you thought you did it. You found a tennis thing that blew my mind. No one sweats more on tour than Francis Tiafell. Or at least someone who lets you know I'm sweating out here, guys. I'm putting in work. I'm trying to hit this tennis ball and hit it better than the other guy across the net. It's a great question, Stephen. I would say it's about half of a Francis Tiafell sweat, which means to most of us, considerable

22:53sweat. That's a heavy sweat. Yeah, that's a heavy sweat. Considerable sweat. We can talk a little bit more about let's plan on going into kind of the plan for the Broncos. That's all very interesting and seems positive on Josh Simmons, but we won't have another show between now and that game. So if you get a big injury update tomorrow, we'd all love to see Josh Simmons miracle. I'd love to see Josh Simmons in week two, but you know, all good things there to keep in mind. Let's start there. Maybe it's more Jaden Hicks as we talked about.

25:58Maybe it's more leg serious needing the slot to get Chris Roll and Wallace back at safety. How do you think that ends up mattering against a team that has court on Sutton, that has Jayland Waddle, and it has an offense that was pretty good last year and I'm not going to say anything about the quarterback. I think I would really like to see them just test out this yard secondary, the corners and specifically. I've got more hesitancy about the safety. I think Gilman was a good signing to help keep some stability in the room with with cook being gone. But I really and honestly, I think Gilman in some ways might be a more classic fit for certain things that Spags likes his safety to do. We'll see. Very, very smart player. He had a pretty quiet preseason, but that was only partly because the chiefs were pretty clear like, yeah, he's our best safety. He's our starting safety. We like him.

26:59He's our guy. I would really like to see them challenge their young corners and leg serious need. Sorry, Licharis. But I would like to see them challenge them to really do some aggressive press man stuff. Delayne looked crazy physical during the preseason. He's got an opportunity to kind of get some of the star type treatment because he's a high level draft pick. Come out and play just just beat him up at the line of scrimmage. Play some really aggressive man coverage with help and see if you can get home with four. I want to see the chief kind of go against tendency a little bit and be a little bit less aggressive. I think Sean Peyton does a good job overall taking advantage of some Spags tendencies in terms of sending extra guys. And I think he's pretty good at attacking the open gaps that that leaves. So I want to see them really challenge that a little bit. I want to see them go against some of their tendencies and see now that it appears that

28:03the defensive line is healthier than we had feared it would be. I want to see what that looks like. I want to see now it's a really good offensive line they're facing, but part of it is to protect it schematically as well. I would like to see Armace and Thomas get some opportunities to be set up one on one. I would like to see thank you, pass blue. I'm sorry. I wasn't going to do this attack like CJ and San Andreas right after you took those boxing lessons. You just get out there and just start fighting everybody. You know, you know, not every neighborhood, not every neighborhood is green. It's time to take another neighborhood. That reference makes nothing to you. It's gang warfare. So I would love to see that I'm crossing. I would really like to see them. I want to see them attack rushing the passer in a way that does orbit around Chris Jones it always should, but also setting up some other guys here to specifically Armace and Thomas. And this is the time where it's like, okay, do we have three?

29:07Do we have two dudes now? We'll see Armace and Thomas, that's a lot to ask. It's a lot to ask, but or can he just be at least a high level complimentary guy? What can Peter Woods do? Let's let's start spreading that offensive line out rather than just trying to set up Jones to be able to attack two gaps. Let's see what happens if we're asking multiple guys to win one gap. See what that looks like. I'm excited for all that, but I think you could start around. You've got some really, really physical corners. If your top three are delaying Williams and Sneed and from all appearances, that's what's going to be your game plan should be to beat the crap out of those wide receivers. They'd like 2023 style. That's a way to do it. And if Williams plays as well in man as he did last year, if Sneed is remotely as healthy as Reed is making him out with me, he was a full participant. You sure want? I think you keep him in the slots. You limit his snaps a little bit more. Help keep him healthy. And if Elaine is what he looked like in the preseason, this actually could be a strength

30:10of the defense. And I think you build around that with a lot of aggressive and coverage stuff. So that's what I'd be excited to see. It's one way I would attack them even though they've got good receivers. I want to see, hey, Bonaix, fit it into those tighter windows. We're going to make you make tough throws. No Williams is good at the catchpoint and is good at the watch points. Sneed is good at the catchpoint. Let's attack those windows, Bonaix. Show us you can throw in those tight windows, not just exploit open zone areas that got skimmed open. That's what I'd like to see and then see if they can make them uncomfortable. This is a great opportunity for them to show the past versus better than it was last year. Are you guys all the most excited on from the rookie class about our Mason Thomas right now? That's not his name. It is. It is. I'm a professional broadcaster. No, no, no, not not here. Nice. You can't even answer my question. I'll pick you guys out. I'll do this myself. No. I want to hear from you, Josh, but I can answer the question first. Just straight up yesterday, who's the rookie you're most excited to see on Monday night?

31:10Delane. Yes. But armass and Thomas is right there. See, I think for me, it's become armass and Thomas in part because my expectations for Delane have been very high since the moment they drafted him. And so he can go out there and prove that it was worthwhile. But I also think that his floor should be, this is dangerous, but should be pretty high. If he's, and if he has a disastrous first week, I'm not going to assume that Moncer Delane can't play in the NFL. And if he has a great first week, I'm not going to assume that he's the best corner in football. Where are my Mason Thomas can move the needle on Monday? If he, and you mentioned him like being a dude, I don't, he doesn't need to take over the game. If it takes over three reps and it has three quick wins off the edge, he'll have something that this, this defense has not had in agents. So I think that like I was obviously Delane is the higher pick. I was more excited about Peter Woods at the time. But as things stand now, just in terms of wanting to see the guy play a game that matters, I think I'm most excited about armass and Thomas right now.

32:13The reason why I would say Delane is, is match up specific and fair. I always remember Trent McDuffick, who is probably thrilled to no longer see this man, but also probably not thrilled to be in Australia at the moment. I'm so fascinated to see how he and Jalen Watson do in a very like one off game. We have no track of reference. We've never done this before. Send them boys to Australia. Why? I mean, we know why capitalism. Right. Anyway, anyway, if you did, if you didn't know kids today's word is capitalism. Um, man, it's written me. Duffy hated Cortland Sutton. And I don't know if it was something about the size match up and the route running ability and the hands through, through tough, you know, contact contested catchability, both in

33:13the intermediate and the deep part of the field that if Mansor Delane can just make Cortland Sutton just a little bit more frustrated than a two time all pro in Trent McDuffie. My eyebrows will perk up. Yep. Because if of anybody in the division, nobody gave Trent McDuffie more problems than Cortland Sutton and Trent McDuffie and acknowledged that himself last year, like, holy smokes. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's a shomic face scheme thing that helps. Obviously, but McDuffie, uh, understood that like his toughest challenge in the, in the, in the division at the time was Cortland Sutton. So that's, that's why I'm, I'm really interested in Mansor Delane because I think your right set, I think playing man coverage and seeing how you hold up, at least in the first half of the game, really, really fascinating. But I also understand if you are interested in a young, up and coming Republican with a

34:1451 on his jersey. Well, boys, we got the right 51 stands for him making Greenland the 51 state. Let me tell you what that's right. We got, we got two Mactop specific democratic office of tackles that we know our boy Republican Mason Thomas can go get after that's Garrett balls legitimate left tackle and still in the early, still pretty solid Mike McGlinchie that she's would be thrilled. They had Mike McLidge on that roster thrilled. I tell you thrilled. They would, but I'll tell you one thing McGlinchie has traditionally struggled with his speed rushers. Put him in the cycle. Let's, let's just see what it looks like. I'm, I'm, I'm very excited and honestly, honorable mention. There's a lot of guys excited about what this rookie class. I'm curious. I think Woods is going to be pretty quiet to start the season out after watching the preseason tape. But I will say one thing about him that's just worth noting, I think that I went back

35:16and I watched every snap of his from that third preseason game, including when he was, you know, he wasn't just against the third stringers or whatever. I would say if it weren't for armace and Thomas, like having such good games in the second and third outing, like he was fine in the first one, but he showed way more in the second and third. Right. So, I think people would be talking about how much better Peter Woods looked in preseason week three versus preseason week one, because there was a significant difference. Now, most of it showed up in the run game, but that does matter in the modern NFL. His ability to shoot gaps and to make guys miss and pursue from the backside and kind of corrugate things there. While also simultaneously, you know, Spags, we talked about this when they signed Tonga. Spags once guys that can, you know, against like, you know, outside zone looks can, can hold off an offensive lineman while actually gaining a little traction into the backfield and standing control. He looks like he can do that. Like he can hold up at the point of the attack and shoot gaps, making him kind of tough to deal with in the run game, because you don't know how he's going to be working it.

36:18I'm excited to see that. Like this, so there's a lot here. Like there's that rookie class has potential to be really, you know, what do you see? I'm a Johnson a little bit. 38:26So I don't have the advantage of having read this story before it comes out your 2025 Patrick Mahomes film review is very near the end of the of the process there in the chief in the north news letter over on sub stack. What what is stood out to you? I know if people want all the charting and all the stats and all the numbers and everything go read the story Friday, Saturday, perhaps it should be up tomorrow. There you go. Now that these listening on the audio side, maybe it's there right now. But you know numbers and gifts you can only do so much with in the podcast form. What what stood out to you? I guess narratively you know what I mean by that like what what was the common thread or the things that stood out to you about Patrick Mahomes is 2025 season. Absolutely. And I if you'll indulge me for about 30 seconds, I fairly rarely do this particular thing. I would really urge everyone to to read it. And yes, you got to subscribe to read it. I'm not dropping this one for free. The numbers, the numbers for 2025 will actually be above the paywall and then the numbers

39:27for previous years will be below the paywall. $2 a month, the contextualization. It's my number month. I would capitalistic greedy people. I would really urge you if you really care about contextualizing quarterback play. This is one of my favorite things to do. My chart every dropback. I ended up doing 11 of the games that moment started last year. There were a couple like the Texans game. The offensive line was gone. Like there are certain games. Washington didn't matter that much. But you chart every dropback and you analyze the things that the quarterback has control over. You know how accurate he is with his throws in and out of the pocket. Whether or not he bails on clean pockets, whether he misses open receivers within the context of his reads. How many plays he creates when things break down. How many times guys are covered all the way before pressure breaks through or whether pressure breaks through just right away. Both of those are flushes basically, right? Right. Because if everyone's blanketed down the field, indie game and pressure doesn't come through for four seconds, that's still a flush. These are the key here is you're trying to contextualize my home's display, right?

40:31You're trying to separate it from everything else in a way that numbers, even advanced numbers, don't do. You know, expected points added. That's an offensive stat. That is, it tells the story of the entire offense. So this is one that I think people would be interested in reading because I'm going to give kind of some of the general takeaways here. And if you really want to see the numbers to really get through the nitty gritty, you're going to have to read the article. But I, my biggest takeaway is that I think 2025, when you look at the numbers, there are two things I'm going to say. I'm going to say good news and bad news. The good news is that yet again, when you actually break it down game by game and chart it, my home's was once again elite in his charting, especially he was back to creating yards at a crazy rate again, actually the highest rate since 2018 higher slightly. He created yards at a higher rate than he did in 2018. So created yards against the stat where the play breaks down and he makes something happen.

41:33That's the good news. I think you can probably sense what maybe the bad news would be based on created yards being so high. Based on the direction his numbers, quote unquote numbers are trending with a few different things. I think 2025 should serve sincerely as a warning shot for Andy Reed and Brett Beach, particularly Andy, but Brett Beach as well, when looked at in concert with 2024. And there's a few reasons for this. One is that his happy feet snaps drifted up just a little bit again from 2024 where they drifted up just a little bit from 2023 where they drifted up just the from 2022. So remember happy feet snaps, that's where you bail out of a relative of a clean pocket. And because of that, his missed shots, they climbed just a little bit. Now the interesting thing, it's not the highest his miss shots have ever been. It just 2023, I believe was that.

42:35That was actually just like two really big games where it was just awful and it destroyed everything. But that climbed again. And here's where I think the warning shot should really come from. And maybe I'm giving away a bit of the farm because this will be below the paywall. But if you actually go through the chief season, you can see where my homes is play started to dip. And everyone's going to say, oh, it was probably like Dallas when everyone got hurt. But you actually can see the trend start against Buffalo. Yes. And they were pretty healthy against Buffalo. They were pretty healthy against Denver. They were pretty healthy against Indianapolis. And against Dallas, you can actually see Dallas is a wonderful game to review because when you get to near the end of the second quarter, the homes didn't have a single happy feet snap. Didn't have a single miss shot. Didn't have any potential picks. I don't think that game. But he he was playing a really clean game. And before Josh Simmons got hurt, the wheels started to come off.

43:38Now when I say the wheels come off, the patch of homes is play. And I contextualize this. It's no way, way, way better than it relative to his peers. Yes. Yes. But I would say what you can see here is if you I'm going to say numbers, maybe this won't land, but I think it will just with happy feet or missed shots. So missed receivers that I really think you should have caught in progression. It's for multiple weeks, one, one, two, one, one, one, one, one, then suddenly in the last four games, you got a three, a four, a two, and then it gets Denver. You don't have any. So of his missed shots, almost half of them, in fact, over half of them occurred in the final four games that I charted. Which again, doesn't include was kind of a catastrophe against Houston. And the Chargers game, I assume probably looks similar, but again, the offensive line have been decimated by this point. And this was before you had all the offensive line injuries. This was with Rishi Rice, a lot of these games.

44:41This was with Xavier Worthy. And this is a great quote from Pasley here. There's a tremendous demand on him to play perfect all of the time. Yes. When you watch it, snap by snap by snap. The RPO was weren't hitting this frequently. And you could see against the Colts, the effect it was having on him, certain snaps early in the game where he dropped back and nobody was open. And you'd see the effect it would have on him where he would drop back and he would try to throw to a spot and Noah Gray wouldn't slow down in the right spot. So it falls in the lead. So then he stopped trying to do that. And he was just trying to make things work with his feet. So there's one snap in particular, I actually shared it on Twitter and people have argued back and forth about what it looks like where Mahomes scrambles for a 10 yard game. The thing is Xavier Worthy wins on the outside, one on one look. It's actually a decent look overall. The protection is overall there. Mahomes climbs the pocket.

45:42He could easily just slide in the pocket and fire on time. Doesn't instead he scrambles up. Now because he threatens to throw, it keeps the defense hanging back a little bit. He's able to scramb for 10 yards people like, oh, 10, 10 creative yards. Yes, but it's symptomatic of a problem where he did not trust Worthy to win that route. And that's the big thing where you can actually look at Mahomes as play and he by my charting is doing MVP caliber stuff through about about eight weeks. And he was he was the odds on favorite to be the MVP winner before they played the Buffalo Bills. And then it started falling apart. And it wasn't because of injuries because it happened before the offensive line got decimated. So to me, I've given away most of the farm here and I'll be able to provide like, you know, examples with what I'm doing. But you'll see plays even in good games where rather than making the throw, he hesitates.

46:47And that's got to stop because it results in guys getting missed or throws being a little late and being harder than they need to be. And at times his accuracy going down just a little bit has accuracy dropped a little still at a high level. So those are all that that's there's like a good news bad news things. Mahomes was still my homes. I thought there was based on anecdotal stuff. And I think I remember talking to you guys about this. I thought it was going to be more of a drop off from previous seasons. It wasn't, but it has continued a slightly downward trend every year, which tells me and again, this is, this is just charting what he's doing. That tells me it's starting to affect him. The pressure to be perfect every game and the inability of the offense to generate explosives outside of him creating them and not trusting the scheme to win, not trusting these guys to win. You'd see him like against Dallas tried to trust her. She writes a couple times with the back shoulder type thing and just wasn't working.

47:51So that's a lot of takeaways there, but I'm just recouraging all of it. Can I can I add something to that? I would love that. His numbers and I remember being on that shuttle in South Paulo and was like confident. If the defense gets off the field on third and 14, he's going to do it again. He's going to take them right down the field and he's going to beat the chargers yet again, almost single handedly because as much of that gain gets distilled into the unfortunate collision between Travis Kelsey and Xavier worthy guys, he realized in the second quarter, I got to do it all on my own. He absolutely pances Kalo Matt who will definitely go on the Hall of Fame scores a touchdown. His office of wine.

48:51Now, I think there's a little bit of an unscotted look and again had tips of Jesse Mentors, but the pockets collapsing. It's third down. Nobody's open. He does an absolute sorry kids who didn't you shit and somehow gets the ball to do just an issue. For a first and they immediately score. If Travis Kelsey catches the ball or he goes to the this is similar to what you were saying earlier, Seth, if Travis Kelsey reads it the same way, Patrick reads it in the red zone, they don't settle for a field goal. They scored us down and the absolute come back is on and still it's third and 14 and you're going to give the ball back to that guy in that environment when he was playing that well, people do not realize how well he played in Southamelo. They really don't and they couldn't win that game, which tells you looking back contextually,

49:54that was a terrible warning sign because he wasn't going to have Xavier worthy the same way. He already didn't have where she writes and unfortunately we didn't know it at the time, but the injury bug was going to catch up to them in a way that he had not caught them in the last five years. Seth, I want to ask you a follow up that's probably a little bit beyond the purview of specifically the film review, but when you say this has got to stop the trust issues and and kind of the second guessing of all of that slice up the responsibility pie for me there. How much of that falls on the homes, how much of that falls on the past catchers, how much of that falls on the coaching staff to the best of your understanding. I think anytime you see trust start to fail, I think you got to do at least half, half the player, half the coaching staff. And that's like, you know, that's that's if you're trying to be generous to both sides, right? Problem is, you know, my home is really has earned a really big benefit of the doubt that he's probably doing everything he can. And in every single game, you could see him trying things and sometimes they just wouldn't

50:59work. And so I can actually understand why my homes would enter that. That's a great point. He played really well in week one. This it's a, it's such a great question. I would say that the the choices they've made at receiver and the way those receivers have been deployed has not helped him so that's somewhat a personnel thing. They have not found a guy to revolve the offense around who's not Travis Kelsey. And so every year and every game, even last year, it just comes back to the same thing. I remember the mic up of their last Superbowen gets the Niners where it's like, it's either Kelsey or he's going to scramble. Yes. And it's state, it stayed that way. And that that's on the team. That's on the front office. You know, however, what you want to blame Andy for that or, you know, whatever you think who has the control there. That's on the front office for not getting a little more alpha stuff there. I think the scheme stuff and the execution stuff ultimately falls on coaching.

52:00So that's where you kind of get both barrels there. So I do think a little bit of his on the homes because he starts trying to do too much and you could see him get it's almost a loop there. And that's where you've got to be able to settle down and forget. And I think, and this is where I think I think the last two years are a warning. I think it's getting harder for him to turn that off. And that's that's just a theory, right? Like I don't know the guy from everything we've seen about the homes. He's unbelievably mentally tough. So he might come in this season, same thing. But I think it was a little harder for him to get past in 2025 than it was in 2024. I think it just a little more often started pressing a little more often started breaking the pocket and the numbers back that up trying to make something happen, feeling like nothing will happen otherwise. And so that's where it is on the coaching staff to find more easy buttons. And that's the thing. They really are going to run the ball. Let's say, I'm going to throw out numbers 8% more often and 25% more effectively this

53:02year. That alone could be enough to actually let him let go a little bit. I know again, this is a ridiculous analogy. But sometimes when you go through something like really, really tough, it's, it's, you don't even realize how hard you've been hanging on and how hard you've been like, you know, like white knuckling, like if you drove the really bad rain storm on our way to Florida to drop my son off at college, because you know, Florida, when it rains, it's like, good Lord. Like, is this the ocean? You know, and we went through a really bad rain storm. And I was driving like 45 on the interstate. Fortunately, there was a semi in front of me so I could like kind of still see the road. And so you're really slowed down. And then we finally, we saw the end of it and we drove out of it. It was great. And it was only then when I realized how tight I was hanging onto the steering wheel. I think my home is hanging onto the steering wheel so tight because he's had to. And that should be a warning because eventually you're going to, it's going to be hard to

54:07unwind those no matter how mentally tough a quarterback is. Everything that you just said is, or is I think statistically reflective of some of the uncarecord mistakes he made in the Red Zone. And part of that is because, uh oh, Harrison Bucker is not as automatic as he used to be. Yep. Yep. We are trailing more than maybe I'm comfortable or used to. Our offense is not as explosive. So when we go and get back in the Red Zone again and, uh oh, that guy is running with the ball in his hands and he is not wearing my team's chairs in Jacksonville. Uh oh, this really is going to be the last time that we're in the Red Zone. It gives the chargers or the Broncos or the, you know, like there are so many, um, Red Zone turnovers last year that were so when you look at it, go like, honestly, like, come on

55:08to disgusting because he's just had a career of which he doesn't do that. Now, none of them were quite as agreed to says what Drake made did yesterday. But they all those every, you know, I, I, I, I, I, I, let's tell people half of their one score losses last year are including a my homes turnover in the Red Zone when they could have been seven or three instead of zero. I think it's a beautiful segue from this into our final thoughts on Chiefs Broncos. Um, I don't know if we'll do this every week or this will just be as, as we feel like it. But I want us this year to try to give everybody something to watch. Something that stands out to us that we haven't yet covered during the show leading up to it. Something that's maybe gone a little bit under the radar. I'll go first, um, so you guys can think and also so I can take the one that I've been afraid. You guys are going to mention for the last 15 minutes. There's one player who I feel like, you know, fans may have heard of, but haven't necessarily heard much of, uh, in, in really this entire offseason to this point. You know, you know, what's nice instead of white knuckling it when you're driving Seth,

56:10maybe putting it in a cruise control, which is what I would like to just introduce Chiefs fans to this young man named Kenneth Walker, the third. He plays running back for the Kansas and Chiefs. Now he used to play for the Seattle Seahawks and we haven't talked about this. Dude, it all and I understand why he hasn't barely played in the preseason. You shouldn't running backs have a finite number of carries. I don't need any preseason carries. Nope. But so many things I would like to believe. No, look, I also think that, you know, get it acquiring a high level number one wide receiver would have solved some of this. I think that a great year for Mashi rice or Xavier worthy would solve some of this. If people know I'm not running back purist this way, but if Kenneth Walker is here for anything, I think he's here to make sure that Patrick Mahomes doesn't feel completely hopeless when the offense doesn't fire on all cylinders. And last year there were so many instances where it was not firing on all cylinders. And there was not hope to be found next to Patrick Mahomes in the back field. There was a third and one conversion next to him in the back field, but not, not, well, maybe I can get an explosive.

57:11When was the last time there's probably an answer to this? When was the last time Patrick Mahomes enjoyed an explosive play that he did not have a significant hand in creating? It wasn't in 2025. It didn't exist. I mean, the ability for him to be able to give the ball to Kenneth Walker and move on and move the sticks feels like the biggest thing that we haven't talked about. So I get the cheat by taking a very obvious something to watch. Do you know what you know what's I have the answer to that question just statistically? And you know what's ironic about that? Is it Caderius Tony and the Super Bowl? No, the the one time last year, one, the one time that, well, I actually will say too. I know what the most recent one, the first one was the end around to Xavier worthy. Where it was like, oh, he's still fast. He's still to Ravens. And the Ravens were like, well, we don't have anybody on defense. Like have you seen our defensive line? It's it's in tatters. But the most recent one, that's right.

58:11Passlux was Kareem Hunt against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night football in week five. And you know what? That explosive run came at their own one yard line because that's how they got the ball because of the great instinctual play by Nick Bolton to punch the ball out of Trevor Lawrence's hands on the fourth and goal, I believe from the one to punch it out. And then I think George Coloff just recovered the ball. Oh my goodness. This is a seven point swing that she's are definitely in control. Holy smokes. There goes Kareem Hunt for is that is happened? Did he pass the sticks and kept running? Yes, he did. And the crazy thing about it was they were the farthest away from the in zone. They were trying to reach. Yeah. Right. Give me some Venerable. Watch that. I think that's a great one. I think I'll just keep going and keeping with a theme we talked about, but a player we didn't mention in it.

59:12I have relatively low expectations for Cyrus Allen in his first outing. I know the team has some hopes, but he did not have a very efficient preseason. They seem to struggle to figure out how to get him involved. We'll see if that's different with Pat and all that. If he can be an outlet to beat man coverage, one snap a game early on, one snap, just one snap could make things so much easier. So that's what I'm going to be looking at to see last year. They did not have an answer to man coverage. Can he help? And if he can, even for a snap or two, it makes all the difference in the world. Because man coverage is already kind of dangerous to play against the cheese because of how dangerous mohoms is with this legs. I understand there might be different now. You need both know that man's going to scramble at some point on Monday. Yeah. And we're all going to be like, but that's, but I think if you can include that with someone who can win against man coverage at least somewhat, it changes the math for teams. So I'm excited to see how they get him involved and how they get Xavier worthy involved

1:00:15in that stuff too. So I guess I'll say man coverage winners. Nate, give us something to watch and get us all the way out of here. Take this to the house. I got to go. All right, boys.
