Welcome to Before Breakfast,
a production of iHeart Radio.
Good morning.
This is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is that you don't have to figure out
every situation from scratch.
A few templates that can work in common situations
maybe just what you need,
to make the people in your life feel cared for.
In other words, even if one size doesn't fit all,
one size may fit some.
This tip comes from Will Guidara,
the former general manager of 11 Medicine Park,
and the author of the book, Unreasonable Hospitality.
He was recently interviewed
by gathering expert Priaparker.
Over the years, 11 Medicine Park became known
for extraordinary thoughtfulness.
Think, providing a sled to diners
seeing New York snow for the first time,
so they could go sledding after dinner.
But as Guidara explained,
one size fits one hospitality is hard to scale.
It is hard to constantly come up
with new, extravagant ideas.
So he suggested looking for patterns in what happens,
and how you can respond to fit those patterns.
He offered the example that lots of people
got engaged at 11 Medicine Park.
The restaurant team got the jeweler Tiffany
to give them champagne flutes and Tiffany blue boxes.
Then, when couples got engaged,
the restaurant served champagne in those flutes.
After the toast, staff washed the flutes
and gave them to the couple in the blue box to take home
as a memento of the moment.
Champagne flutes in a special box
wouldn't make sense for everyone,
but one size fits some.
And they were a good gift for newly engaged couples,
without having to come up with some new way
to delight every newly engaged set.
Even if you are not the manager
of a special occasion restaurant,
one size fits some is a helpful tip to remember.
For instance, maybe to decide that a large proportion
of people you know would love a monogrammed LLB
boat bag as a gift, or seize chocolates as a gift.
Now, obviously for people who are allergic to chocolate,
or who work for LLB and don't need any more boat bags,
you come up with something else.
But one size fits a good number, even if not all.
One size fits some for notes too.
The same phrase can convey gratitude
and thank you note after thank you note.
For most sympathy cards, the same basic structure
and a core sentence of condolence
will get you 80% to complete.
You change things up for very unexpected circumstances,
but you generally don't have to start from a blank page.
One size fits some for food.
Have a few go-to dinner party meals,
and you will be able to host a party
and delight your guests without overthinking it.
One size fits some for entertainment too.
Develop a menu of perhaps five destinations in your area
that friends and family visiting from out of town
might enjoy.
Perhaps museums, restaurants, parks, historical sites,
or special shops.
When they are planning a trip to your area,
and ask for your suggestions,
all you need to do is copy and paste the destinations
that are good fit for them and hit send.
I think the wisdom of one size fits some
is that it is not one size fits all.
You are not trying to shoehorn every person
or experience into a single response,
but you also realize that given the pace of life,
one size fits one solutions are probably not practical.
You don't have the time to start from scratch
and figuring out how to respond to every person
and experience.
With one size fits some,
you are developing great responses to common patterns
and getting a lot of mileage from these responses.
When a unique situation comes up,
you can come up with a unique and thoughtful response.
But much of the time, your menu of existing responses
will equip you to respond with care.
In the meantime, this is Laura.
