Ofcom Investigates Climate Skeptic Views on TalkTV

This is the first time in nearly a decade the regulator has probed such views on TV or radio. Initially, UFCOM decided against investigating two complaints, but it reversed course after lobbying from the Good Law Project, a group pushing, climate activism, and transgender rights. The complaints targeted guests who described climate change as a deliberate push to create fake anxiety from false claims. Another called labor's energy policies, suicidal, driven by pseudo-science and cult-like behavior. A third involved talk on how net zero policies might affect people in the UK. Critics are calling it an or well-earned attack on free speech. The free speech union boss labeled the complaint's vexatious efforts by activists to silence dissent. A Tory peer warned UFCOM risks, becoming a Ministry of Truth, arguing science needs room to evolve, and viewers can just change the channel.

UFCOM explained the show's raised issues of due impartiality and material misleading this. Since January 2020, they've logged 1,221 climate-related complaints, but none before breached broadcasting, rules. Talk TV plans to cooperate fully with the probes. As these cases move forward, they highlight ongoing tensions over balancing free expression and broadcast standards on hot-button topics like climate, policy.
