Nuyina Icebreaker Ran Aground: Preliminary Report

0:00Here's more Adelaide news from March 17th. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau released a preliminary report on how the research vessel RSV-Nuina ran a ground off-herd island last October 13. This $528 million icebreaker was out doing drone surveys near uncharted waters about 4,000 kilometers southwest of Perth when it hit shallow ground. The problems stemmed from the ship's retractable drop keel, sticking out 75 centimeters beyond its normal 9-meter draft. To cut down on noise interference, the main navigation sounders were turned off and depth readings from another system weren't linked to the bridge, alarms or charts. There were 37 crew members and 85 expeditioners on board at the time. The ship managed to power through the shallows, drift clear, and whole position while they checked the keel, which turned out to be badly damaged with, gear broken or gone.
