My Tomlin is stepping away from the Pittsburgh Steelers after 19 seasons as head coach. Taking over is Mike McCarthy, the former Green Bay Packers coach who worked with Aaron Rogers. In his first year with Pittsburgh wearing black and gold, Rogers threw for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns. And just seven interceptions at a 65.7% completion rate. The team made the playoffs that season, but fell 30 to 6 against the Houston Texans. Now Rogers faces a big decision on whether to keep playing or retire, leaving the Steelers to think ahead no matter what. Experts like Luke Easterling from Athalon Sports see Pittsburgh grabbing LSU quarterback Garrett Newsmeyer in the third round of the 2026. NFL draft as part of that planning. Newsmeyer shown in his junior year at 2024 with 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

But injuries cut his final college season short to 9 games, 1,927 yards, 12 touchdowns and 5 picks. Under McCarthy, Newsmeyer could develop behind Rogers if he returns, building arm strength and decision making for a smooth handover that keeps the team competitive, long term.
