1:25Hi, Brian and part two of today's show here in the Irish Breakdown podcast, brought to you by our friends over at FanDuel. We're going to start talking about the Notre Dame Corner Backroom. And a very similar conversation to what we had on Tuesday about the Notre Dame Linebacking Unit. This is an absolutely loaded room. Now, it's a little different because there's not five guys all returning that we're a part of the rotation, but what they do return is absolutely outstanding. Now, that being said, the similar question that we have to the Linebacking Unit, there's a new position coach. And so there is a lot of questions around Aaron Henry and what we're going to see. And we're going to take a dive into that in part two today's show. And then obviously to follow, we're going to break down the super talented room. But ultimately, when we talk about the cornerback position, this is where we have to start. The roster's loaded, but a new position coach raises some questions. Yeah, I mean, that's the dichotomy with a lot of this on defense driven. It's not questioning the new coach. It's, we don't, it's the unknown of how a coach will do at the new place.

2:28We've seen plenty of times over the years, Trevor, where a coach who has a successful track record gets harder to new school or gets a promotion, you know, from position coach to decordinate or, or something different than the job that he thrived at. And he doesn't do as well. We've seen coaches who are okay at one place come to another place and thrive. And so it's kind of the opposite story of that. And we don't know how coach Henry is going to perform at Notre Dame with the town he has. We know his track record and it's an impressive track record. But it's, it's the unknown. It's not, oh, I don't know if Aaron Henry is as good as Mike Miggins. It's, I genuinely don't know if Aaron Henry is going to be able to do as good of a job as Mike Miggins. It's, it's, it's the unknown aspect of it. And so while we know the talent and we know the expectations, it's more so, let's see how the development goes. Let's see how the relationship goes and we'll dive into all those things. But here's the reality of it. Let's set the expectation. There, it's the same at linebacker and it's the same at D line, Trev. There is no, well, let's give him a year to get comfortable.

3:33Let's give him a year to get acclimated. Here's the reality of, of what Brian John Maria stepping into. I was so happy when he had pronounced his name in the interview. Yes, he has a great cool work getting it. We got it right. Yes. But same thing for him. It's the same thing for coach Partridge is the same thing for coach Henry. The expectation is you got to walk into this sucker and get it going and get it or keep it rolling. And there can be no, well, it took me some time to figure this out and that out. You don't have a bunch of puppies. You don't have a bunch of potential. This is a room where it is proven. Charlie Partridge has potentially us to turn into production. Brian John Maria and Aaron Henry have production and proven production that they need to turn into an elite cornerback room. And that's what it needs to be. It's, you've got this, you're inheriting the best cornerback in college football. Undisputed best cornerback in college football.

4:35You're recruiting and you're inheriting another two-year starter that's a pretty good football player. You went into the portal and got a very talented fifth-year player who's a three-year power four starter. You inherited another rising sophomore or you went out into the portal and got another stounted sophomore from Michigan. You're inheriting two very talented rising sophomores plus you're inheriting the best cornerback class in all of college football coming in as freshmen. So there is no, with all due respect to coach Henry who I'm excited to watch coach. And we'll get into that. We're just setting the stage for the expectations. It's like you walked into a great situation. Keep it rolling because this needs to absolutely be one of the nation's best cornerback rooms. If not the best cornerback room in all of college football this season. That's the expectation for coach Henry just like it was for coach John Marie. And just like it is for Charlie Partridge, coach Partridge. And so that's the expectation. There's unknowns. Yes, can coach Henry do this? Can he do that? Can the players do this?

5:36Who does this? Who does that? We're going to get into all that. But at the end of the day, the expectation is is that, you know, I don't care if it's by week one or week five, but when that group clicks with new coach and players and some maybe some players new spots, once it gets going, it needs to be the best in the nation. And hopefully that happens before they've got an L or two on their their docket. But you know, like like last year, but like look, that's the reality. And it's such an interesting dichotomy to last year. We had three returning position coaches that had been part of something special and one new coordinator and how that clashed. Some good, some bad. And how it took, you know, four a month to finally get that rolling. Now it's a complete opposite. You've got the decordinator. Now three new assistant coaches. What's it going to look like? How long is going to take? I don't know that I necessarily expected to look like, oh my gosh, after week one, that's the best cornerback room in the country. It's going to look good in week one.

6:37But at what point time does it reach its full potential? How quickly can that happen? And does it happen? Because that's what's needed for this team to win a championship. When you have an elite group, they got to play like an elite group. And this isn't an elite group in my opinion. And they got to play like it. At some point in time, they'll have to get that's that's the responsibility for Aaron Henry as we kind of dive into to him and and and some of those aspects of it. Yeah, you're 100% correct. They're absolutely going to need this unit to be one of if not the best unit in the country. If they want to do something that hasn't been done since Lou Holtz was a head coach at Notre Dame. And that's the one a national championship. We could sit and talk all the time about how they're still the favorites on Fandall to win. And CBS Sports has them at number two and getting a buy in the playoffs. But at the end of the day for some of those things to come to fruition, you need those units to perform. We're full of food analogies here on this channel. And the thing with Aaron Henry right now, it's not even dead. You have the ingredients. Now, how do you cook the meal? Right now, the meals basically cooked. Now you just have to plate it and serve a five star dinner. And that's kind of what the task at hand with Aaron Henry.

7:40But like we talked about, is that a decent analogy? No, it's a great analogy. Because what you're basically saying is don't drop it on your way out to serving it. And of course, what pops him head then is the Chappelle Show skit where they're talking about. Don't, he's got, I got brought back some yellow cake from Africa. Don't drop that, don't drop that. You know, it just made me think of that. Sorry, it's a great analogy. Like it's already been prepared by a world famous chef. You know, you're going to put the finishing ingredients on it. You know, actually, I should say, it's like the world of renowned chef, like left, like right before it was finished cooking, you just got to finish it up, put it on a plate and take it out there. Yep, that's kind of, that's kind of it. Yeah, 100% you got a garnish it, plate it up, serve a five-star dinner. And then this group is going to be absolutely cooking. I'm going to stupid your pelchus. Yeah, I get it. And then just go some, I don't know what to say, because I'm probably going to get like a ding on his name. You know, some dude, don't drop that.

8:44This is just that whole skit just. I just, yeah, I got a special CIA napkin. Sorry, that whole skit, does that mean? You're good, man. I teach you, I teach you up for that one. But with this corner back, sorry, let's give back the corner back. No, you're, you are all good, man. Put your, put your analogy is great, because it's like the ingredients have already been bought, but it's not like you're inheriting a young group that has it reached its potential, right? The meal has already kind of mostly been made. Now it's your job to really put that, it's like there's that. And this is really done, but there's like, there's that one extra spice that's just missing. Like, you know, you ever make something to have like maybe get a recipe from your mom or a recipe from somewhere online and you're like, hey, I'm going to try this recipe. And you're like, man, I had this here and I'm trying to make it here. And there's just something missing. Like, there's just, oh, you know, I'm missing this ingredient. I'm missing that spice.

9:44Like there's just something that you've got to finish it off and put it on there and deliver it. Now it's, you know, wonderful. And that's kind of what Coach Henry's walking into. Now that doesn't mean that if they're great this year, he gets no credit. He's going to get the credit, but it's like, it's just a different scenario than let's say, what Mike Brown was walking into in 2023. You know, it's like, it's kind of like what J1 Cider walked into last year. It's like, dude, this has already been laid out for you. And then look what J1 Cider did with it. Now, Dylan McCullough deserves a lot of credit for laying that foundation, but you've got to give also credit to J1 Cider for taking that sucker to that final level, which we saw last season. And it took time. I mean, we were critiquing the footwork of the backs early on, especially Jeremiah Lovey's getting down till who's too fast. The timing on the counter play wasn't really great. It took some time before they got rolling. But boy, once they got rolling, that thing was a thing of beauty. It was the best in the country.

10:45That's the analogy. That's what I want to see from a cornerback. And you'll get the credit for it and you'll deserve the credit for it. Because you do have to take it to that next level. And that's what I'm excited to see from Aaron Henry. The good news is Trevor is Marcus Freeman went out and hired someone that has literally developed one of the nation's best cornerback groups. With a group of players, he inherited. Now, it took until the second season, but he inherited a roster of DBs that that Lovey Smith recruited to Illinois and turned them into an elite unit in 2022. I think three of their players got drafted from that unit. Giovanna Witherspoon was a unanimous all-American. He was a top five draft pick. And so like you walked into a great situation. And then you had to turn it into something. That was a little bit different because Illinois was as a team, not as good. Trevor in 2020 is as what the Notre Dame team he's walking into.

11:49And some of the players he inherited were a little younger. You know, they had had the COVID year. The year before they'd gone two and six. His first year, they go five and seven. And then the next year, you know, that defense is great. And they have an elite secondary. Sydney Brown, also with Giovanna Witherspoon. I think Kerry Joseph, I think, was part of that. That unit, at least in 2021. But he took a really talented roster and then took it to the next level. And that's what he's going to be attached with doing it another day. But when you have someone who's done it, I mean, that's the, that's, that's a big part of why did you hire this guy? Well, there's a proven track record there. He had been a defensive coordinator in the big 10 the last three years. Now he's coming in as, you know, co-dee coordinator. But he's got the same role that Mike McKinsey had. He's basically the past game coordinator. And your job is, okay, how can we take this thing to another level? And, you know, like, that's, that's the first question. Is how will he adapt to the new players? How to the players? How are the players adapt to him?

12:50And, you know, it's just like how we talked about yesterday, Trev. It's like, how quickly can he get by it? You know, how quickly can he learn the strengths of the players and learn the weaknesses of the players that coach him up? How quickly that happens is going to go a long way towards determining whether or not Aaron Henry can get this group role. This is the exclusive table with the view. This is your name on the list. Very similar to how a lot of Lou Holtz's former players talked about him is how a lot of the current Notre Dame defensive backs talked about Mike Mickens.

14:53Yes, he's a great coach, he teaches us things technically and he's very focused on the craft of playing cornerback. But he was also very focused and very intentional about developing us as young men. And he knew what Notre Dame was able to provide me for beyond my playing career. And so getting buy-in from this group is going to be huge. And if everything mesh as well, I really do think that a lot of these things that we're talking about are going to start coming to fruition. But buy-in is going to be absolutely huge. Buy-in to the scheme. Buy-in to Aaron Henry is a coach. And then on Aaron Henry's play, it's also, hey, you're going to have to be able to buy-in and accept the fact that like some of these players like Christian Gray and Leonard Moore, some of the older guys in the room have been learning from Mike Mickens for multiple years. Very similar conversation of how we talked about Brian John Marie is you can't come in and put your fist down on the table and say, this is my way for get everything else that you've done. There has to be a blend. And that's going to be huge for them this upcoming season. Yeah, and one thing I really respected from Coach Henry

15:57is in his opening press conference. You can tell there was a reverence for Mike Mickens. I think that was a mistake that I believe that Coach Cider made. Is I think he kind of came in and felt the need to kind of you know show, hey, I'm the boss now and maybe not say the things he probably should have said about the predecessor. And from what I've been told, Aaron Henry had to complete opposite approach. It was like, hey, I respect the job that was done here. That's part of the job, that's part of the reason I'm taking this job is because I know the challenge in front of me. I know the job that Mike Mickens did. And I love that he said he called Mike Mickens. And we talked about this last week. But he said the question wasn't like, hey, talk to me about Christian Gray's talent, talk to me about Leonard Moore's talent, talk to me about Dallas Goldner Marksackers talent. It was more of how do they learn? And he wanted to go through the players and find out how do these players learn? That's like, okay, that's a coach that gets it, right? Like he understands is like, look, the talent's there. Certain foundation has been there. But as we're adapting and learning and adjusting and building,

17:00tell me how these kids learn. Tell me, tell me what makes Leonard Moore tick? What makes Christian Gray tick? And then you start to apply those things. Because you know, whether we like it or not, we are going to see a shift in the defensive philosophy as we move forward with Chris Ash. We're just going to see more zone. That's just the reality of it. We'll see how that, you know, if it's aggressive or not or productive or not or whatever those things are. But his job is to teach these players to execute that at a high level. And, you know, so we've got to see what he can do. And then another task to Trevor, here might be the toughest task that he has. You've got to make sure that you're doing a masterful job of coaching the entire room. And that's always an important thing for me, Trev. It's even more important for him this year because your room is absolutely loaded. But these guys wanted to play for Mike Mickens. They didn't sign up to play for Aaron Henry. That's part of Cobb's football.

18:01But that's who they thought they're going to be coached by. When a kid, we've talked told stories about how, you know, corners things weren't working out for him. And with the vast majority, I think Jaden Mickey being really the only exception in his situation was quite unique because of what he went through as a young man that was just, unfortunately, put him in some different situations. But for the most part, you didn't see a lot of transfers out from their name corners unless they were kind of processed out. The reason why is because there was buy-in to like, hey, I know I didn't play a lot this year, but Coach Mickens, he's looking out for me, he's still coaching me. I've told the story before. I think it's applicable here or it's appropriate here. Where I talked to a cornerback of a scholarship of the parent of a scholarship cornerback and he was bearing the depth chart and said to his, you know, you're going to transfer and he's like, no, you know, we talked to him about it, but you know, he believes that coach Mickens is investing in him. He coaches him just like he coaches the starters. That's where that buy-in came from because like, look, hey, I may not be a starter, but I'm getting coached by Mike Mickens.

19:02He cares about him. He's invested in me. Coach Henry's going to have to show that. He's going to have to do that because if things don't go well for some of these players this season, they're going to be more prone to want to leave because the person that they committed to is no longer here. So you've got between now and the end of the season to show these young men that, hey, I know I didn't recruit you here, but I'm going to treat you like I did. I'm going to have the same, you know, I'm going to have the same buy-in with you that Mike Mickens had and I need you to have the same buy-in to me that you had for Coach Mickens. How do you build that? Well, you show you care about him. I mean, we talked about that. That's one of the things that you love that you mentioned. The comparison between Luke Holtz and Mike Mickens. That's something that Coach Holtz was very, you know, let him know you care about him. That's how Mike Mickens was in his way. Let him know they care about you. Coach Henry's got to do that same thing because you need to keep this room together, because when you go through the whole cornerback depth chart, it is loaded. There's no way you can keep them all happy from a playing time standpoint.

20:06Unless you just blow teams out every week so bad that it doesn't really matter because everyone's going to play. I mean, what are the odds that's going to happen? You know what I mean? Every single kid on this roster is like litter, I don't even mean, I'm not even being hyperbolic. Every single kid on this roster, right now for Notre Dame, that cornerback, all eight of them would have without a doubt either started or been the two deep on Notre Dame's 2020 and 2018 playoff teams. Every single one. Now, not as like if they're all there, obviously they couldn't have been. I'm saying individually, they all would have been in the two deep or starters in 2018 or 2020, 2018 they'd have been in the two deep. Some of them might have started, but most of them would have been in the two deep in 2020. Bunch of them would have started and all of them would have been in the two deep. That's eight guys. You can't play eight guys in the corner. You just can't do it.

21:07So how do you keep them locked in and invested? You got to invest in them. And that's how you keep some of these kids who maybe aren't playing as much now, but look, man, you know, look, DJ's gone after this year. Leonard's probably gone after this year. Christian's gone after this year. Be patient. Your time is going to come. Well, if I don't think you're invested in me during the season, then I'm not going to really care that you now want to tell me how much you love me after the season. You know, and that's going to be a challenge for Coach Henry. I'm not saying he will or won't do it from what we've seen at Illinois. It sounds like he has a reputation of being that kind of coach, but I'm just simply saying that's what he's going to need to do at Notre Dame in 2026 to make sure that this room is locked in and about the brotherhood as they were beforehand. You know, and that's a challenge that all these new assistant coaches have to have to go through and and thrive in to keep this roster loaded to where this year isn't just the only year you're making a run. You're making it next year because, you know, Trev, we're going to we're going to go through

22:10something here in a little bit. We're going to show a we're going to show the roster as it as it is once we get to the breakdown and boy, is it impressive? It is a really impressive group. It's not it's eight right now, but it'll be nine in the summer once DJ McKinney shows up. And we will we will talk about DJ McKinney today. This isn't a spring preview. This is just more of a roster overview. But I mean, it's but there's only two players on this on this list that are out of eligibility after the season. That's it only two. The talent in the room is exceptional, but how how Aaron Henry coaches the room from top to bottom will go a long way with buying it. Those are kind of one in the same conversation for all of the reasons that you listed off as well, like just as the season unfolds. If in 2026, Notre Dame doesn't lose one of their starting cornerbacks for at least a couple games, that'll be the first time in like four years. And this this room as talented as it is, like you said, with everybody except for two guys having the eligibility to return in 2027, this is a relatively young group.

23:14One thing that Mike Mickens did such a great job of his recruiting, I hesitate to use position was football, but he drafted or he recruited a lot of cornerbacks like he could play field, he could play nickel, he could work out in the boundary, heck if I need him to, he could play safety. And so like conversability were two very important attributes for Mike Mickens when he was working on it. There's no question about it. Absolutely. And so the other task form is, you know, where do you put people? Where do you put your players? You combine that with the youth and the team are on in the room. That's why it's so important that he coaches this room from top to bottom. What if Leonard more rolls up his ankle again and has to miss a couple of games? Who's your number two boundary? It's either going to be Kari Adams, a true freshman, an Aiden Pounsy, who's a true freshman, the Amoev DJ McKinney over, and then what happens with Christian Gray? Where does he line up? Is Mark Zachary going to be your backup in both outside corner positions? I don't know the answer to that. But one thing in common that a lot of those guys have that I listed off is they're very young. They're either going into their sophomore

24:15or true freshman season in college. So coaching this room from top to bottom is going to be absolutely huge for Aaron Henry. It's going to go a long way with buy-in, man. It's going to be huge. It is. And again, I believe the track record is there for him to do that. But I'll be one to bet you he's never had a room this deep. It's a very different challenge. Absolutely. Very different challenge. And we'll see. And I think the second question to have that you have to ask about the cornerback room is this is how will Chris Ash use the unit? This is one of my biggest unknowns coming into the season. And I have some thoughts. I have some concerns. And I have some, if it goes this way I'm concerned, if it goes this way I'm fine. My concern isn't that they're going to play zone all the time. It's not so much that it's will it be a passive zone? Or will it be more of an aggressive zone? Do you continue to play the aggressive style that worked so well in the last eight to nine game? I mean, really the last eight games because even though they didn't blitz a lot against Arkansas, they played a far more aggressive zone. And it was very

25:18effective. You know, like, like do you play to the strengths of these players? Or is now we're in year two now you guys need to do better at what I want you to do? Like are you going to take the nation's number one cornerback and say, let's have them play cover three all day? Or are you going to say, hey, maybe I need to adapt what I want to do to make sure that I'm taking full advantage of the nation's best cornerback? You know, so, so those are things that we need to learn. Now we've seen Aaron Henry coach a very disruptive, very aggressive secondary. He did that at Illinois. The 2022 secondary under Ryan Walters is the decordant. It was very good. But here's the deal, guys, just like Mike Mickens isn't the reason they played soft coverage in the first three games of 2025. Aaron Henry doesn't call the defense. Chris Ash does. So that's going to be the other question. And I'm not this is this isn't bashing Chris Ash. It's literally bringing up a question because we saw two very different styles of play last year from the Notre Dame defense, which direction when they go and people need to understand this is not a zone versus man conversation. This is

26:19aggressive versus passive conversation. And if it's aggressive, they can play as much zone as they want. I mean, we've seen elite team this. I believe from what I've read, the Super Bowl champion Seahawks are a predominantly zone football team, correct? Is that what I not what I've read? Michigan Seahawks, the Seahawks, I believe they're predominantly zone defense, correct? What they played on a zone. Michigan's defense in 2023, which was elite, plays predominantly zone defense. That's how they shut down that high powered Washington offense. They played a lot of zone, but it was aggressive zone coverage. It was discipline zone coverage. And that's really what this ball is down to is will it be aggressive or passive? If it's aggressive, you're going to flourish. And do they utilize the talent that they have? I think those are all questions. And then we talked about do you put players in the right spot? One thing that was interesting is they were going to move Christian Gray to nickel and have DJ McKinney and Jaden Sanders and the returning

27:22players Dallas Golden Mark Zachary really ballad out the outs for the to start opposite of Leonard Moore with Dallas Golden also playing in the nickel because he's still the future at nickel. Does that continue? Now that you've got a different coach there, I think that's a big question work as well, Trev. Yeah, it absolutely is. And in a typical professional fashion when he was asked about it during his media sessions, you know, with a guy like Christian Gray, you try him out everywhere, but we're just not going to know until we're at a practice and we might not even find out then, you know, so yeah, it's absolutely. You're not going to know to practice one of Christian Gray's a lockdown nickel. You're going to need to give it some time. Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. But that's going to be a very interesting task. I echo a lot of the same sentiment that you said about Chris Ash and how he uses this cornerback room because it is exceptional. And I'm very much looking forward to hearing a couple minutes when we get to dive into this roster, but those are kind of the two biggest questions with this room, but it doesn't necessarily change what the expectations

28:25are for this room, which is I think you can kind of walk and chew gum at the same time and have that conversation. If there are some unknowns, but one thing that we do think is certain is this is the year for this room to be absolutely elite. And there's not really a whole lot of excuses that you can make us to why that it isn't. So I'm that's where I'm at with this cornerback room man. It's it's going to be special to watch.
