Normans Celebrate William the Conqueror's Birthday

0:00On March 30, Channel Islands reps just linked up with Normandy folks to kick off their role in celebrating 1,000 years since William the Conqueror's birth. They launched it at the British Embassy in Paris this past Thursday tying into the millennium 2027, the European year of the Normans. The islands are gearing up with cool events like a medieval festival, concerts across Jersey, and exhibit at Guernsey Museum and weaving the theme into Alderney Week. This whole project comes from the Normandy Regional Council and will roll out through next year, spotlighting Norman vibes all over Europe. It pulls in spots from the British Isles and Channel Islands to France, Italy, Denmark, Norway, and more, with exhibits, talks, conferences, and themed happenings. Guernsey folk artist James Dumbledan even lit up the launch with the performance. Back in history, William grabbed the Duke of Normandy title in 1035, kept the islands in his crew through the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and snagged the English throne.

1:05By 1204, most Norman lands fell to France, but the islands stuck loyal to England and scored big independence. Jersey and Guernsey leaders are hyped, saying it boosts their Norman bonds and spotlights community-driven events on history, language, and traditions, expect these celebrations to drop fresh energy on our shared roots, all through 2027.
