It was once the Northern Territory's safest labor seat, held for 23 straight years until the 2024 election. That's when voters delivered a 25% swing against longtime member Natasha Files, handing a narrow win to Greens candidate Kat McNamara. By just 36 votes, McNamara has now quit parliament after 18 months for health reasons her first seat for the Greens. Labor lost big across the territory in 2024, dropping from power to just four seats in the 25 seat parliament. Crime rates had soared during their eight years in government, and voters also turned away over support for fossil fuel projects. Files stepped down as Chief Minister amid a share scandal, replaced by Eva Lawler, but it wasn't enough to hold on. Voters in progressive Nycliffe punished labor from both the right on safety and the left on the environment.

Now in opposition, leader Selena Weibo points to scrutiny of issues like maternity care shortages and a controversial administrator appointment. Labor's candidate, Darwin Counselor Ed Smelt, is pushing cost of living relief like community batteries, better health care, and stronger green protections. The Greens have Suki Doris Walker, who nearly won nearby Fannie Bay last time, while independent Phil Scott and the country liberals add pressure.
