NHS Staff Sick Days Surge, Strikes Loom

0:00On April 6th, NHS staff in England clocked a staggering 28 million sick days last year, the highest ever recorded. Out of that, a record nearly 8 million were chalked up to mental health issues like anxiety, stress, and depression, more than one in four total, absences. These numbers jump from 21 million sick days back in 2020, and since mid-2019, the health service has lost over one, 151 million working days to illness. 6% of all available time, triple the private sector average, add in over 262,000 days lost to junior doctor strikes, and it's no wonder waiting lists are exploding. Taxpayer watchdogs are fuming, calling it a billion pound crisis that's leaving patients stranded while hardworking folks foot the bill. On the flip side, health leaders point to pandemic fallout, rising demand, tough finances, and reform jitters as the real culprits behind the mental, health spike, up 42% since 2020.
