NFL Starts This Week…Here’s Some Sunday Counter-Programming: The Most Segregated Hour

0:00Welcome to Karen Hutchers Awesome. Today is Sunday. It's an unusual day for me to check in, but I thought this would be a good time to have an honest conversation. There's a quote that is credited to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 11 o'clock on Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America. He didn't coin the phrase, it might have come from Marie Johnson, civil rights activists or Dr. Benjamin Mays. It was probably one of them idioms that people passed along and then we attach it to a famous person because that's what we do in this country. We look for avatars and heroes. We're really the sentiments of knowledge and all of that gets passed down through the community, through discussion and it doesn't belong to anybody. It's not owned by one person. It is all of ours. So yeah, 11 o'clock on Sunday morning, the most segregated

1:03hour in America. That was said back in the 1950s and 60s. I'm certain that is still the case today. So if you are coming back from church or you're heading out to church, look around, look around your congregation and see some of you. And it's not just about complexion. It's not just about complexion. It's also about ideals. When I think about the church that Jesus Christ assembled, which was out of the Pharisees and the Sadacies order, it was not in order. He was a rabbi but not following any of the Talmud or the Torah. He had come to tell them that everything that they were doing was out of alignment with God. And he was showing them the way that the way was in community. He cobbled together disciples from fishermen and tax collectors, thieves and women, maybe it'll repute women that were not proper in society. He was a man of a certain age that

2:04wasn't married, which was out of order. We don't talk enough about Jesus in my opinion about how out of order he was. And I'm asking this question of everyone listening, how out of order are you? As you sit in your church and you read your hymns and you quote your scripture and you whole people accountable to the Word, are you actually following the teachings of Jesus Christ as you say his name, as you take his body, as you drink his blood, as you sit in a confessional, calling a man father. When the Bible says, call no man father, are you out of order? Are you in order? Are you actually a follower of the faith that Jesus Christ, of the good news that Jesus Christ laid for? Are you following that? Do you read your Bible with a sense of connecting to people? Or do you read it looking for ways to beat people up? Is that the goal to tell people that your righteous and their not? Because if you really follow Jesus again, he cobbled together disciples

3:09from all walks of life, including women. Actually, the women were the ones that discovered him when the stone was rolled away. It was the women that didn't leave his side, but yet, but yet we follow a faith in a Bible written by people like King James and Thomas Jefferson. I didn't realize he had a Bible until Michael Harrier told me that. But men were writing the Bible, but it's the word of God. Is it? Is it? And does that feel like blasphemy that I'm saying that? Or is it the truth? Because what Bible did Jesus use? What Bible did Jesus use? What Bible was he teaching from? In the beginning was the Word and the Word became flesh. In the beginning was the Word and the Word became flesh. In the beginning was the Word and the Word became flesh. And that means that he was teaching from his spirit. And now we use a Bible cobbled together by councils, by men sitting in a room deciding which books get in and which books don't. And then we use that very book to beat people to death.

4:13And I say to death because that Bible was used to Christian slave ships and to pray over dungeons in Africa that Bible was used to justify the decimation of indigenous people, the murder in the genocide of indigenous people. That Bible was used to kill Catholics and Protestants who supposedly loved the same Jesus were killing each other over religion. That's been a wild thing. And if you have a sit up and actually think about it, I think you might change or you might be mad right now. And if you are angry, if you find yourself bubbling over and saying Karen, oh, Karen, you're being flipped blasphemous. Oh, I can't stand what you're saying right now. I can't stand you. Please sit with yourself because this is the beginning of perhaps a journey that you might need to go on because why were you born? Why are you here? Why are you here? Are you here to judge, jury and execute people's souls? Are you here to become the greatest version of yourself? That's

5:18the question that I've been pondering this whole journey here. Karen Hunter is awesome. I've been talking to different people and my goal is to get to a place for myself, but also to challenge everybody listening to be better, to be better, to find yourself and really live a life because that's why you are born to live and living requires something of you. It is not hiding behind words written and cobbled together by men. It is for you to get out and explore. And it's really why they're eight billion people on this planet. Nine billion probably. We don't know who's counting. Who's counting? There's billions of people here. How many people do you know? Are you knowing the same people? Are you sitting in the same church on Sunday with the same people who believe the same thing and eat the same food and sing the same music and look at the same TV shows and don't read the same books because you don't read enough for it to matter. Are you doing the same? What's the point of having fingerprints that's different from the next person if you're not

6:20supposed to be different? And then your difference adds something to the tapestry of humanity. So I just wanted to say yeah I'm going to start a new series but it's not really a new series. I have in this space you can go back last year. I started a series on the book of revelations because I was at one point in my life obsessed with knowing how this all ends. In my 20s I was obsessed. Actually in college I would read I had a Bible study in college which is interesting. College is not really the place. Well some college, depending on the college, I went to Drew University and I would have Bible study one of the freshmen that came and her dad was a pastor and I was a senior and I took them under my wings. I think I've always been kind of a wing wing sprider. You know, bringing people in and taking them under my wing. But one night in particular my former roommate as seniors we had our own room. So we lived in this dorm and one night we were up. It was like 2 3 o'clock in the morning. Study in the Bible. And it wasn't like a real

7:23like religious brow beating type of Bible study but we would gather in my room from time to time and read from the book of revelations. And I remember like it was yesterday because the television was on in the background. I always had a television in my room. Big TV too. And we were reading from the book and we looked over and it was like 2 3 o'clock in the morning and a commercial came on. And it was for a product that I don't remember what the product was for but I do remember the price. The price was $6.66 which if you know anything about commercials and television or whatever there's nothing that cost $6.66. And if I wasn't the room by myself I could say I was a loosening but there were 4 other people in the room with me and we all looked at that television and looked at each other and we were like what the f and we all simultaneously closed that book. It scared us. It scared us. We looked them were like did we just did that just what the hell. So I do know that there is also something supernatural in this world that if you choose to tap into

8:28it it will find you. Seek and you shall find. That night we closed the Bible but I think back on that and that probably we should have doubled down because that I think that's what that energy wanted us to do is to close that book. At the same time as I'm saying that book was cobbled together I'm saying that two and more gathered brings a certain energy that this present darkness, the forces of evil if you want to call them that because we do not fight against flesh and blood. The forces of evil they don't want us to come together and talk and commune and examine and study and question and challenge. They don't want us to do that. So that night we didn't. We closed that Bible and they left me in my room by myself. All ran. They ran as if the room was the problem. It wasn't. It wasn't.
