NFL owners just greenlit some big rule tweaks set to kick in next year, mainly prepping

for a possible referee lockout.

The leagues officiating crew in New York can now pipe in from their command center to help

onfield reps with clear video evidence on missed calls, or fixes but only of talks with

the referee's union flop after their deal expires, May 31st.

They also loosened up kickoffs, letting any team go for an on-side kick any time, not

just when trailing and tweaked alignments to cut cheap, out of bounds plays.

On top of that, teams got the nod to attempt on-side kicks without declaring first in some

spots, and league staff can now flag flagrant fouls or non-football acts for potential

ejections.

These changes pass with votes from at least 24 of the 32 owners during meetings in Phoenix.

back in 2012 that led to wild calls and headaches.

This move signals the NFL wants smooth sailing if things go south, avoiding those growing

pains while training backups early.

Negotiations hit a wall last week after barely half a day of talks, with the union crying

foul and the leagues saying they aren't bargaining for real.

Key hang-ups include pay hikes.

The NFL offers 6.45% yearly, versus the union's 10% push plus shifting postseason gigs too.
