Newark Police Nab Cable Thief, Boost Safety

Response officers on patrol near Newark Castle Station spotted a shady vehicle that peeled out around 11.50 pm on Monday, March 30. They chased it down quick and found the car idling with no driver, but a guy trying to duck in the passenger seat. A search turned up heaps of copper wiring. Big burnt right off it, so they seized the lot and booked him on suspicion of theft. This fits into a team-up between neighborhood cops and response units who have been hitting the streets hard for weeks after theft reports spiked. These crimes hit hard, causing power outages, and risky road conditions that cost big bucks to fix. Inspector Charlotte Ellem, the District Commander, says keeping the lights on and streets safe is now top priority for local policing. State patrols are paying off already, with 1,700 meters of stolen cable recovered and several arrests from spots like the A, 616 near Kellham.
