New Lock Gates Uplifted at Gees Lock

0:00Hey, it's Corey with Lester News today, your city, your news, every day. New lock gates have just been lifted into place at Geese Lock, near Glen Parva, and Lester Shire. This is key conservation work by the Canal and River Trust to keep the canals running smoothly. Meanwhile, teams are also upgrading gates at Gas Pipe Lock and Piwell's Lock near Fleckney. It is all part of a 1,300,000-pound repair program across East Midlands waterways. The new gates will last another 25 years, replacing old oak ones that wear out from constant wedding and drying. Funding for Geese Lock came from players of the People's Postcode Lottery. Each gate gets custom-designed and hand-built by skilled crafts people in the Trust's workshops, using time-honored techniques. They are restoring brickwork, too. According to site supervisors, the remote location made it tricky, with no road access so everything arrived by boat. Head weather and flooding stretched the usual 8-week job even longer.
