New Law Protects Farmers from Dog Attacks

The dogs' protection of livestock amendment act covers attacks, chases, or even dogs just running loose near farm animals like sheep and cattle. Even without bites, the stress can lead to miscarriages, injuries, or deaths among the animals. These now have expanded powers to see suspect dogs, take DNA samples, and issue unlimited fines to owners. This applies not just in fields, but also on roads and footpaths, protecting a wide range of animals including llamas, goats, pigs, and even ducks. Farmers are feeling the strain from rising incidents, with NFU Mutual reporting 1.95 million pounds and damages from dog attacks on. Farmers' stock last year, up 10% from before, in the Midlands alone, costs hit 438,000 pounds. A survey showed 87% of sheep farmers dealt with at least one attack.

Irresponsible owners often underestimate the harm a quick chase can cause. During peak lambing season, keeping dogs on short leads near any livestock is the simplest way to avoid tragedy. Officials urge rural folks to report suspicious activity, so everyone can enjoy the countryside safely.
