And Marron and Duke used to go out at Coach K, Coach Williams. And he used to be knocked down drag-out. And always would be, I think the Saturday

2:00before the Super Bowl, there was always a huge game. And man, I'll tell you what, the C&M kids. Five guys only. Yeah. And you know, watching Charles Barclay and those guys that have time yesterday, Charles was just like flabbergasted that they were playing with only five guys, C&M. And he goes, how is this even possible? And sure enough, Duke, just basically wore them down. And it's amazing because the C&M had so many opportunities, like at Dunks and they were missing Dunks at the beginning of the second half. And those poor kids just wore it, that they get worn out. I mean, and it was, I mean, it was really Yomin's effort if you had put it that way for those five kids. And I would just say that was, that was about as exciting a game as, because it was so close to actually happening. Yeah, it was, of course. And if you're a St. John's fan, you'd love to see Duke knocked out before a potential sweet 16 matchup between St. John's and Duke. And I understand that St. John's got to win two games to get there. And that's not going to be an easy task, especially if one of them is against Kansas.

3:01But that would have been absolutely amazing. It made the path a little bit easier for St. John's at a year where they got screwed with their seating. Yeah, it's, it's, what have been unbelievable? You know, Boozard took over. He just kept going to the hall and nobody could stop him. Yeah. And I don't know who the big white kid in the middle for the, for CNN, that poor kid, it was exhausted. Yeah. You know, and really this is, I think what Charles was talking about at halftime, like eventually they're going to wear down. Eventually you have to, you have to just impose your will on a team that doesn't have any substitutions. I've never seen them like it. Yeah, neither of I, I mean, especially because you're talking about a 16 seed that's going up against a one seed and these guys are throwing every single ounce of energy throughout the entire game against one of the most talented teams in basketball. What was the spread in that game? It was probably, you know, 14 and a half, something like that somewhere around there. I would imagine I, I don't know. I didn't end up betting that game. It was one that I,

4:01I didn't really look at much. But yeah, this was the thing that got your eyeballs on the screens yesterday, more than anything else, I think. Well, you're bad in the other thing that actually does show itself in these tight games, late in games. And this is where I guess, and again, I'm not so thoroughly into everything that St. John's has done this year. But if you're not making your free throws at the end of these games, you're going to end up losing. And that, and that happened a couple of times yesterday where, you know, teams all they had to do is hit their free throws. And I, one of the, she's which game was the last night? The guys at North Carolina. North Carolina missed a bunch of free throws at the end of the game. And then he goes to miss one on purpose that doesn't hit the rim. And, you know, that, that was another one. I mean, and that's why college basketball is amazing because it is really, it's 20 minutes of fury per half. And guys are going 100 miles an hour and it always comes down to whether or not,

5:02especially when it's close, whether or not you could eat your free throws late in the game. Yeah. And you're talking about obviously, you know, throwing everything you have in every single game because it's a single elimination and it's what we love about the tournament. So, you know, the other story yesterday was this high point university and they end up beating Wisconsin in a 12-5 matchup. And one of the things that was talked about going into this nil era in college basketball was we're probably not going to get deep runs by Cinderella teams or some of these small conference teams like we did in the past because they're not going to be able to sustain the amount of money that it takes to have the best players. So, so when high point, it was a team that a lot of people, a lot of the experts like to beat Wisconsin, they end up being a 12-5 matchup, would you always see one of those five seeds go down? And they end up winning. And I'm just thinking like how, how is this possible? So, when you look into high point university, I mean, high point university is not some little tiny

6:03and little engine that could school in North Carolina that, I mean, this is one of the nicest campuses on earth. If you take a look at this campus, it is absolutely beautiful. Plus, I found out that they chartered their own flight to this game, which is something that like a UMBC or a Loyola of Chicago would never have done. You know, back George Mason when Jim Laranaga was here, that wasn't happening, right? So, charter their own plane out there as this college basketball team. And then you read more into what high point university is. It's one of the most, like mind blowing schools of all time. So, basically what they try to do is get life skills for people that are going to be in big business. So, they have put two giant restaurants on campus, just four kids to sit down and have meals with people to talk business to get ready for the real world. They have a half of a plane cabin on campus because they believe that it's really important.

7:03If you get on a plane and you end up sitting next to a CEO or someone like that, we got to prepare you for those type of conversations. They've got an ice cream truck that goes around 24-7 on campus. That's free ice cream and free sickle that. So, it's like, when I'm about to get into this Cinderella story about high point, I find out that there's got to be a gazillion high point alumni that are very wealthy that are now pumping money into their nil collective and it really isn't a Cinderella story. Any idea did you see whether or not or how much they spent in their basketball team? Did you see that? I did not see that. And by the way, that Duke spread, I was wrong about that. I was 28 and a half. I was way off on that. 28 and a half. It was 28 and a half, yeah. Oh my God. Yes, 28 and a half. I mean, I don't know, I guess unless you were out of a sure Sienna fan, you asked a lot of money yesterday. Yeah. I think, right? Well, or if you saw I didn't believe in Duke, it thought that that number was insane, right? How much money has high points spent on there?

8:07I don't know if they're going to make that public. I know sometimes like you see like Ohio State and all that stuff. Well, that's because they're state schools they have to. Yeah, they have a two million dollar nil budget there. Wow, two million dollars. So, yep. That was January of 2024. So it probably has grown since then. Yeah, I got a, I got an email yesterday and it's tier one NIL basketball programs. Mm-hmm. The NIL era has created a clear top tier in college basketball. A small group of programs now have the funding collectives donor support to build multi-million dollar rosters every season. And there's probably about, I don't want you into every single one of them, but there's probably about 20 of these teams that are considered like tier one teams now. Yeah. And St. John's is on that. Yeah, 10 million dollars. Right. You cons on that. Yeah. St. John's is on that. Duke Kentucky, North Carolina. Kansas, Arkansas, DYU, Tennessee, Texas.

9:10Like, you know, Texas has to play a playing game. Right. So they win that and then they have a theoretically. It's an upset. Sure. Yeah. But they're, but they amount of money that they're spending on their basketball program is ridiculous. Yeah. And what I don't see in here. Oh, I don't see the University of Maryland in here. I don't see Rutgers in here. No. I mean, I could, and I guess, you know, in these, in these situations where again, Charles was talking yesterday, in a one game, take all anything can happen. You know, kick can get hot. Got can, you know, be bombing from three. And next thing, you know, you find yourself down 15 with about four minutes to go. And the underdog wins. And that's kind of like what happened with the USA hockey team. You know, and also the Venezuelan baseball team. Like, you could, you could find yourself in just one game, just play the best game of your life, pitch the best game of your life. Hopefully the other team doesn't hit or all of a sudden, some guys hitting threes out of, you know, from 35 feet out. Yeah. And you end up losing.

10:11And that's what all of this, like, when I think of these sporting events that have taken place over the last two months, if you will, if they're, if they're one and done, that's what makes it so exciting. And that's what gives the, the underdog the opportunity for an upset. Oh, could this vintage store be any cuter? Right. And the best part, except discover. And that's why it was a little bit disappointing when I found

12:13out about the high point because I was like, oh, this is kind of fun that maybe there is a team still there that can make a run and everything else that we thought we were losing in the, in the nila era. But whatever, that's just something that's going to go by the wayside these days. I'm happy that St. John's is able to spend the money. I've never been upset, you know, when Steve Cohen is spent more money or any other team. I mean, it's a little different. I mean, that's a protein. You know, but I just, I understand it's different. But I'm just talking about as far as an advantage goes, like that's, that's the apples to apples argument. Like I don't care. St. John's has an advantage money wise. I don't like that doesn't mean anything to me because I'm happy that there is a giant donor there that's willing to support the program because for many, many years, they did not get that financial support. Here's the only time that bothers me about all of this is when players like 23 and 24 years old. Yeah. You know, and maybe they, they're 14 or maybe they didn't go to college, but they went to the G Lee and they weren't able to make it. Yeah. You know, and they still have college eligibility remaining.

13:16I mean, that's kind of like I always thought that college sports should be like 18 to 22. And that's it. You know, maybe in 50 year, if you have a significant injury, not if you played four games, you know, in football season, where they say, okay, you played your four games and now we're going to sit you out and we're going to register you. I mean, there's got to be some sort of uniformity across the landscape of college sports. This is the frustrating part of it. Yeah. I mean, there's, there's a lot of things that have to be cleaned up, but it's going to be very difficult now because now we are deep into, you know, a couple of years of no guard rails on this nil era, and it's going to be tough to put the genie back in the bottle with it. But, but I'm not going to be my overarching point with this though is like, I'm not going to be thinking about any of that when St. John's plays today. Like I'm not going to be thinking about how much Zubi is got got paid this year or how much more St. John's has got wrapped up in their new collective as opposed to the other teams in

14:16their bracket. These are not the things that are going to be crossing my mind. What's going to be crossing my mind is I want to see this team go to a sweet 16 for the first time since 1999. And that's going to be fun because there's been so many years where they've been a non factor going through some miserable, miserable seasons, you know, getting excited when Chris Mulling got here. But of course, he couldn't get the job done pre nil. And he tried his ass off. He was out there doing everything is renovating bathrooms himself for God's sakes. You know, the norm Roberts era, you know, the, the, the Steve Lapis era, you know, that's like all of these things that are are just terrible memories. And I just want to see them have some success and celebrate like they celebrated the Big E's regular season championship and the Big E's championship tournament championship. And I want to keep going. It's fun. And it's not that nil stuff's not going to bother me if St. John's goes to a sweet 16. Yeah. Well, I understand that I still think that there's a lot. Look, I love this. I love March madness. It's great. It's fun because you, you just, you never know.

15:19I mean, that's, that's basically what it comes down to. Be interesting to see what this final four looks like. You know, do we get four ones? Do we get, you know, a two and a one? I mean, like, is there going to be a 12 or, or, you know, or ten or higher? No, I probably not unless it's a team that is underachieved that's got a lot of guys on their roster that are getting paid big bucks. You know what I mean? Like if it's a really athletic SEC team that's a 10, whoever that might be, I have to look through it. You know, that that had underachieved and their players are getting paid a ton of money and all of a sudden they flip the switch and went crazy and got to the final four. That would be the only type of team that could do. But it also goes to show you. So the three top players in college basketball, this kid at BYU, BYU ends up losing last night. Yeah. Now he puts up 35 points and he's a monster in the game, but it goes to show you that, you know, just because you have these top end players, doesn't mean you can win these games. I mean, all it takes is for somebody to go off on one of these

16:20other teams and all of a sudden you find yourself out and that's got to be a pretty like startling thing for like a school like BYU that thought at least, man, we can get to the sweet 16. Yeah. And by the way, welcome back to our world, Robbie Avila, AKA Creme Abdul Jabbar of St. Louis, who was a star last year and has the rec specs on like Kareem did. And he's a, he's a white guy or at least a light skin guy. So his nickname is Creme Abdul Jabbar. Creme, Creme Abdul Jabbar. Yeah. So there you go. These are the little stories that you like to fight. Creme Abdul Jabbar and high point university with a bowing on their campus where guys can practice talking to CEOs on a plane. Well, I mean, look, it was a bit, it was off the, we're off to a good start. Let's put it that way. I mean, it was just a great basketball yesterday watching these kids play and I give a lot of credit to those kids at CNN, man.

17:22They just couldn't, they just couldn't hang. It's just like the last moments of the game. You can see they were exhausted. Yeah. I mean, it makes me feel a little bit better about taking Duke on though if St. Johns does get there, you know? Like if you're, if you're struggling with these, these five scrappy dudes from CNN or throw our dogs at you and see what happens. Ten of them. Yeah. Exactly. That's why the amount of dogs. Yeah. Where they, but you know, they got, they got a who's who to go through to get there. Well, yeah. I mean, I mean, not necessarily than Iowa. Yeah, not necessarily today, but these 12, 5 matchups are tricky. But yeah, the Kansas one is the, you know, Kansas is one of those teams even though they were four seed, you know, they, people thought they could be very easily a one seed going into the year because of Darren Petersen. Yeah. So is he going to decide to go full Kobe on St. Johns in that game? Or is he going to be like, I, you know, let's screw it. I'll play a half and it'll sit down because I want to be the number one overall pick and I don't want to tear my Achilles apart, which is another thing that kind of takes the teeth out of the tournament.

18:23It does. It does, but I do think I don't like just, you know, watching again, watching St. Johns last weekend, man. If they play like that and they share the ball the way that they were sharing the ball last weekend, a lot of those slip screens and things of that nature and the way that they play defense, you know, that they put in so much pressure on the opposing point card. And you got to have some guy back there that can handle that pressure. I mean, that's why the point guard in college pass ball, especially is so important. Those guys got to be able to handle the pressure, have poise, see the basketball court. Don't turn it over. And, you know, unfortunately, Yukon hasn't been able, didn't wasn't able to do that in their championship game this past weekend.
