NC Rep. Mike Clampitt Passes Away at 71

He died on Wednesday following a fight with cancer, coming just weeks after he won his primary election. Clampett represented House District 119 in Western North Carolina. That area includes Swain, Jackson, and Transylvania counties. He first won his seat back in 2016. Lawmakers across the state are sharing their grief over the news. House Speaker Destin Hall described him as a close friend and dedicated colleague who saw public service as a true calling. Clampett spent decades helping his community, from his time as a fire captain to his work in the General Assembly. He focused much of his effort on challenges facing rural areas.
