Nandy Backs Burnham, Criticizes Labour Block

The official reason was to avoid the cost of a new mayoral election, since Burnham would have had to resign his current role. Many in Labour suspected deeper motives, like fears he might challenge Starmer for party leadership from Parliament. Nandy, a close ally and former neighbour in politics, called Burnham a huge asset to Labour and said she devoted to let him stand. She's the highest-ranking party figure to criticize the bloc publicly. 50 Labour MPs signed a letter protesting the decision, and Deputy Leader Lucy Powell, the only NEC member to back him, later admitted, Burnham probably would have held the seat.
