MP's Safety: A Growing Crisis

0:00On April 3rd, Kim Leadbeater, the labor MP for Spend Valley and sister of murdered MP Jo Cox, says politician safety is way worse now than back in. 2016 when her sister was killed, threats and abuse have become everyday stuff for MPs, mayors and counselors. She welcomes the new national democracy protection unit, but calls its need, depressing and angering. The government just named Chris Baumer, a deputy chief constable from Cambridgeshire Police to lead this effort through the National Police Chiefs. Council. Crime against MPs have more than doubled since 2019, hitting almost 1,000 last year alone. From 2019 to 2025, MPs reported over 4,000 offices to the Met Police, mostly malicious messages, harassment and property damage. Leadbeater questions her career choice daily and carries two or three safety devices everywhere. She has extra security at home and her office, just like many colleagues. Taxpayers shouldn't put endless security bills. Instead, we need a cultural shift toward respectful debate, less personal attacks, smarter media, focus on unity and social media platforms curbing lies and echo chambers. Bottom line, everyone deserves to work without fear. So let's push for real change before more voices go silent in our democracy.
