0:00fm let freedom ring and turn up the talk of Connecticut morning show with Gary Byron and Joe the producer am 1360 and fm 103.3 well in case you haven't heard yet there's a big election going on this year uh the midterms yes yes uh very true and uh well well I take nothing for granted I never count my chickens until they hatch I don't care how anybody would say oh you got this this is in the bag you've got this you know what you still got to play the game yep as they say um yeah so not only is our state legislature up because that's up every two years how both both our house and senate state side um excuse me oh pardon me US Congress is also up because that's always every two years all right and that's this year but our executive branch of government that's every four years but that's up this year everything from the governor and lieutenant governor to the secretary of state and the attorney general

2:08decks and our grill don't yes jinx this don't I don't want to say you spoke too soon here and I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer but I've done that I've done oh yeah we're out of it we're we're we're into the spring and all of a sudden you get oh man what's it we're getting up even I don't even want a dusting or a coating I want to be completely out of it um just like Joe he's completely out of it especially at this moment in time yeah um oh you didn't got to show up with you every morning what yeah hey hey hey hey hey hey hey I'll tell the jokes here you pipe down you pipe down Mr. Chairman yes Johnny yes hey by the way I got my uh I I signed up for a room over at the Mohegan uh what's that the 15th of May 15th going into the 16th and 16th yeah 15th 16th of May yeah

3:12and I um now I'm eligible for media credentials correct you are you should have received some information from us about that I did I know I know what you need I filled it out I filled it out I don't have them yet but uh but I yes I filled it out okay yeah and I like maybe like to do the show there we can talk about that offline but uh you know that'd be that'd be kind of fun I think that would be real beneficial to the candidates we're doing uh ctn is doing gabel gabel coverage for us this year first time ever wow we're very excited about that that's yeah that is great for our candidates that'd be really great for our candidates couldn't agree more though all right so uh do you want to talk about you want to talk about the election and some of the republican candidates or you want to talk about the big hearings going on tomorrow with three huge bills uh well I think the interesting thing is less while the hearings obviously are important and they're three very important bills but I what I find more interesting is that

4:16they're so important to the general public and to the welfare of the state of Connecticut that the democrats are limiting the amount of public um comment that can be put on to these tremendously important bills um at the first time and I think that I can remember where the majority party said nope you're only going to get so much time and nope we're going to set a cutoff date um and you know it's interesting the the argument that they seem to be using is that well we're one of the few states in the country that allows unlimited public comment imagine that unlimited public comment on legislation that impacts the public who would have thought that that was a bad idea I guess the democrats do and it's government for the people by the people right well uh there's a piece of paper that says that but I don't think anybody in Hartford who has any control or authority believes that but that's what a piece of paper says that was written you know and I know a hundred and some years ago um that uh you know uh kind of put the power theoretically in the people's

5:20hands but you know I guess we just now you know need to change that you know government by the democrats for the democrats of the democrats yeah I'm a little sad uh and and really disheartened to hear that they would stifle free speech and uh particularly on things that will greatly impact people's lives this is this is you're you're infringing on on your rights let's look at hb5044 public hearings tomorrow wednesday march 11th this is an act establishing vaccine standards next hour we're going to have a state representative in house deputy leader davir tickley on on I don't need you to break it down I'll I'll do that with him next hour um uh it's and then there's sp450 enact concerning the standards of care for immunization and then there's hb5043 and act prohibiting the manufacturer and sale of convertible pistols um which what what is your

6:20what is your comment on these bills look um that's none of the bills surprise me uh it's kind of like the equivalent education bills like what is an equivalent education I know it's it's an education that occurs not at home uh so the the the democrats have decided that they are just going to overtake um the state of Connecticut in the public um and take away parent more rights from parents more constitutional rights from gun owners more rights from from how parents educate their children um you know it's only a matter of time before I think we see more and more things and what I find most interesting about all of this not only the the lack of public input or the reduction of public input as you sent you know somewhat free speech that fall under this little thing in the constitution on the first amendment um but when you look at these these bills and they really impact upon people's rights that seem or that we've always

7:23thought were guaranteed under the constitution the democrats yell and scream about how Donald Trump is just you know running a rough shot over the constitution um and you know taking away people's constitutional rights and so you know without any proof of that but then they actually put out legislation that is proof that they are running rampant over people's constitutional rights and have no real claim or care not only for the US constitution before our own state constitution um and just they're making it up as they go along and it's you know when we we've always known them to be hypocrites but they've taken it to such a new level at this point that you kind of sit there and you go how many times can we say to the people of this state the democrats are not are destroying the state not only from an affordability perspective let's put that aside for a moment the democrats are just actually looking at you and basically saying you are going to be basically searched within our kingdom and we don't like kings unless we are the king

8:30and and you know it's true you know people you know and you know the old saying is that well you know we can live with a benevolent dictator they're not even benevolent um it's you know they they just want to impose their will uh at you know at at the drop of a hat in any way they want regardless of how it may impact most of the people the state of Connecticut to take care of their cronies well if i'm waiting to to hear whether or not they want to seek to override the governor's veto uh his line item veto you know again not always the biggest fan of Ned Lamont but thank you governor for stepping up to do that and what did you hear from legislators how upset they were with the governor for vetoing appropriations to a guy who stole money from the state of Connecticut and duckbackers you know again they just reached that point of we don't care what anybody thinks we're going to do what we want and you're going to just suck it off and like it if you don't then screw you yeah you know what and the democrats voted for that even even when they knew

9:36the scandal surrounding that they still voted any affirmative to to to provide them funds for the these nonprofits including including those who uh well let's face it we all know the center Macquarie scandal there um providing more money for that you know um without proper vetting I think it's it's without the proper vetting I and make no mistake I don't want anybody to emiss interpret me where it's like whoa well the nonprofits do need the funding we're not saying that they don't let's just right we need to take a let's take a look and if and if you're legit you got nothing to worry about right he just you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna go through the vetting with flying colors there's a few bad apples you know badly though that ruin it for everybody else and that's why we're where we at rat you know exactly when you look at what the democrats are doing they simply do that you know when you look at what the democrats are doing they simply don't care it's more about how do we take care it's not even our base anymore how do we

10:38take care of those you know those lucky few um that that we want to to make sure are getting the things that they want um through taxpayer dollars um and again it's little things that kind of add up any one of these things in and of themselves oh yeah okay you know it's not good but when they kind of compound upon each other and how they kind of just disappear not only from the discussion in Hartford but from also from the discussion from the media you know does anybody remember a guy named Costa Stia Monty's right with him they just write about him like every day right suddenly that scandal not there anybody remember this thing down and rotten called like the state peer you remember that right it was 93 million dollar project that's now up to about 360 million going strong just kind of disappears from the lexicon not only the media lexicon but the democrats lexicon

11:39we go right down the list it just disappears and and you know I I don't want to sound like a conspiratorialist um and you Gary and I you know we know a lot of people in the media and we're friends with a lot of people in the media we've known them for many many years but they are complicit in what they're doing here um and and and and moving this forward in such a way that they continue to damage this state um and I continue to see you know national stories ranking states and we just continue to fall further and further and further down the list of where we're at you know does anybody understand putting 43 billion dollars into the pension fund 33 billion of what we were supposed to put in plus an additional 10 billion to pay down the debt to pay down the debt by 3 billion dollars how does 10 billion almost 40 percent pay raises people forget when you give by now because the governor gave out almost 40 percent pay raises people forget when you give those out to pay to state employees you impact the underfunded liability which causes

12:42taxpayers to have to put up more money to pay for the state employees benefit plans uh that do absolutely nothing to help the people in the state of Connecticut but that's just kind of went by the wayside uh both you know from the democrats and the media and these are things that at some point I you know and Gary you and I've been doing this a long time you ran for office and talked to voters about this and you sometimes scratch your head and go why doesn't this bother more people and I sometimes think that we've kind of fallen into the Stockholm syndrome in Connecticut we've done to identify with our captors um but I also think that it's one of those things for them for many years you know people always claim the unaffordability problem here in Connecticut but they were always able to pay their bills I think we've now hit that point where it's unaffordable and they can't pay their bills they don't like what's going on and the question is how do we convince them that you need to change things and how do we convince them that and you know going to put this out there that this is not Donald Trump's fault contrary to what Martin

13:45Looney and Bob Duff said and then editorial two weeks ago that Donald Trump read all the taxes in Connecticut it's like oh my god it happened well we Donald Trump will change you know why they're doing that they're deflecting they do this all the time my thing yeah I call it the squirrel you know you know the you know the squirrels distracts your attention Donald Trump is their squirrel um and if and and how and we're out there and I'm out there and I know you're out there every day and so many others on our side are out there every day talk about this and the democrats just keep coming back with this with the same you know vs um and people seem to be buying it in in a lot of different places and it's going to be our job to really go out there and have these conversations and you know and I continue to have people asking me this question I know we're did off the topic that you know we talked about I'm going to take a break in a few seconds but no finish your thought what you know well what do we do about

16:55spot to who's planning on getting into the race he was planning on doing it last week unfortunately he got hung up in court because that's when attorneys get hung up on sometimes and I know he's had conversations this week with some folks I'm anticipating that he's going to be getting it I think when he gets in he be someone who may be recognizable to a number of people from back in the COVID days I'm anticipating him getting it is a gentleman who his very good attorney has been a really good Republican holds local office right now but has been involved with a number of the issues that came up particularly during COVID with some folks representing people and groups in that regard and has taken on the state and William Tongue in court on some other issues okay so this person is confirmed is he's going to announce I mean it's already heading

17:58into the middle of March and I want to imagine fundraising is key here yeah the good news is the amount you have to raise for the undertake it is a relatively small amount I'm not going to say $100,000 is a small amount but you need to you need to raise $100,000 there's no minimums in any number of people from anywhere in the state and I think this person will be able to do that okay and then we're looking at for Secretary of State Peter Lumage right and is Jen Tuker still running for comptroller yep she's outraged the money I think oh you know what people I think don't always kind of get because of the way the system is structured is that the most important thing that a candidate can do between now and the convention particularly in a race where they're the only one in that race and unless somebody else gets in is getting the dollars to qualify for the

18:58money yeah and that's when she's working on that's what Peter's working on that's what Fred Wilms is working on I know that's what Matt Corey is working on obviously you know Aaron and Ryan have reached those thresholds their thresholds are much higher but they've reached those thresholds Betsy McCoy is working on hers we have you know state refs and state senate candidates who are working on getting those monies together as well and so because of the way the system is structured the most important thing that a candidate can do between now and their main convention is make sure that they have the first part of the double requirement in order to get the grant which is you have to have the money and you have to have ballot access without both of those you can't get the grant yeah and that's the that's the system that we've designed that's the system that we play in I know everybody wants everybody out there running around you know you know really giving about policy and really quick politics and the reality is that you've got to get the

19:58dollars all right I want to finish up one thing I real fox is going to step on me talking till they till they go ahead uh this is thing you talked about the IDs and whatnot here's the thing ask your friends how many of them are getting tax refunds this year ask of them how your friends how many are paying left and will have they are day marks on tax and when they tell you that just looking to say thank Donald Trump there you go okay he reaches on 11th day we wipe Gary Byron and John producer on the talk of Connecticut WDRC celebrating 100 years 103.3 FM Hartford and 104.5 FM list for you don't you just feel like year by year your freedoms your liberties just being eroded slowly slowly I've said this in the past you may have heard me uh maybe maybe some of you weren't tuning in at the time and and what I'll just reiterate what I stated you know they're not going to take all your freedoms away I'm talking about I'm talking when I say

21:01they I mean the liberals and let's face it they've got the overwhelming majority they've got a veto proof majority they rule the rules the power has gotten to their head for having the being the majority party for 40 years they're not going to like blatantly in your face take away all the freedoms that they want to from you you got to remember they feel they can run your life and spend your money better than you can see that would be too blatant and even some of the Democrats registered Democrats and say they wouldn't they'd notice and wouldn't like that so they're not let me tell you they elected liberals in Hartford under that gold dome they're not dumb they're not dumb it's all strategy my friends what do I mean by that incrementally incrementally they want to strip you from your freedoms and they're doing it and they're doing it while most of

22:10you are voting for them again well because a lot of this doesn't get mainstream media attention you heard the expression well you don't know what you don't know maybe most of the people are just so disheartened with politics and government and political officials they purposely buried their head in the sand that's exactly what the elected Democrats of Connecticut want you to do the less you know the less you'll ever protest of what they're doing dumbing it dumbing it down you gotta pay attention folks you gotta pay attention and I get it it can get overwhelming you have lives you got a career you got family all the more reason why you should be paying attention

23:10good morning it's Gary Byron 12 minutes after eight o'clock on this Tuesday morning I am thrilled to have you on board the old morning train our next guest into the Daily Connerton Memorial comforting of you chair is the deputy house Republican leader let's welcome back to the show state representative Dave retigliano representative good morning good morning Gary how are you today well I mean there's a couple of ways I can answer that question I it's beautiful or it's gonna be it's not quite you know bomb me yet it's gonna be a beautiful day sun's gonna be out I feel I love feeling the warmth on my face um but on the other hand I don't like what I see going on up at the Capitol and a particularly with tomorrow Dave I want to start off with a question because listen I only did four years up there um with you and I don't ever remember in any of the committees that I was on and this is where I need your help from from you I don't remember any

24:15cutoff time for holding a public hearing they they want to cut the Democrats want to cut this off at midnight and they're expecting a lot of people I think that's why they're cutting it off at midnight now I know I've been part of public hearings where they were real strict on the three minutes I remember you know chair the chairman saying you know try not to ask any follow-up questions if at all possible because of the volume of people that I understood but you so you weren't they weren't stifling the three minutes well you still got your three minutes you can speak on the record but now we're limiting I we're cutting that their Democrats are cutting them off at midnight so my question I just want to start here with you I don't ever recall that is this a first or is this something new going forward that the Democrats want to do so it's one of the better traditions of our Connecticut legislature that everybody gets to speak we have unlimited

25:17amount of time and a public hearing to speak meaning time meaning the public hearing goes on for as long as there's people that want to speak correct that's been extended because of zoom they do allow people to testify that aren't in person the only part of that I don't care for is that we get sometimes people zooming in from all over the country I don't know if that's the spirit of the of the rule but they've been limiting speech for a long time if you're on appropriations of the finance committee they tell you get one question two questions so what I mean what if I have more the whole point of a public hearing is the solicit information and to learn all right so I don't again I don't like this stifling and cutting off at midnight and I was explaining earlier to people where you know that's a long people that's a long time for them to stay for 14 hours it's like well you know I know I mean we're allowed to get up and stretch our bones and go grab lunch and go grab dinner and go up to our office and return phone calls or

26:19constituent services and and and then go right back down to you know to the committee room and then it is true there's close circuit TV we could all put it on the hearing room on in our office in our offices right exactly that's exactly what we do and we would also stagger it you know where we can't all take our break at the same time we'd have to have some of our caucus representation in the committee let's break down these bills let's let's in fact let's take that these public hearings are for trial let's I'm gonna look at three of them let's go over the first thing though if there's people who feel passionately enough to be there for 24 hours maybe you have a bill that is going too far or is infringing on somebody's freedom well yeah I mean sure we don't want that you know God forbid I was on labor for a long time and you know those hearings lasted forever and it would be the same 300 people saying the exact same things like they wrote one speech and handed it to everybody but he would sit there and listen out of respect but it's like

27:20hey guys you you could have just put this all together and or had one person say I'm speaking for everybody yeah you know when I was on environment and human services those would go pretty lengthy as well not every public hearing but I'm on the more controversial bills I looked at it were like we know that they're saying the same thing over and over again because we're the one sitting there for you know 16 18 hours they however they haven't been sitting there 16 18 hours they may be have heard a few people speak before them have similar you have similar sentiments but they don't know what we know but they weren't they're you know they're not they're all that time that's a fair point I listen I believe everybody should be heard I do my best to spend as much time as I can in public hearings especially on committees where I'm on leadership or I'm ranking I feel an obligation to be there throughout the entire thing so and you're ranking on general law I am ranking yeah all right so let's look at HB5044 and act establishing vaccine standards can we have synopsis on this well I think what they're

28:26trying to do if my understanding is I don't sit on that particular committee is they grandfathered when they passed some vaccine mandate a few years ago for the kids to go to school they grandfathered some people that were already in the system so that they can continue with the religious exemption since that bill's passed my understanding is that there's been lawsuits filed claiming that the bill violates somebody people's religious liberties and it seems to be that they're winning the lawsuit so what they're trying to do my understanding is that they're trying to go back and retroactively say okay we're just going to take that religious exemption away really sort of defeating the lawsuit before it can get to a decision why is government interfering with religion I thought there was a separation of church and state well we have pretty strict religious freedoms here in Connecticut it was a bill that was passed in the 90s that really solidified people's religious freedom but then we also have the the ability to sort of mandate what has to

29:27happen in the public school system it is a very contentious issue about childhood vaccines and schedules and which one they're going to get some people certain people certain religious people feel that you know they have their own way of doing things and they don't want to participate or they want to go at their own pace and the government we the government came in not me personally but it came in it said no no no no you have to follow this schedule or your your child can't come to school all right this is called the homeschooling bill why is that well that's a different bill my understanding is that you know we have a robust homeschool community here in Connecticut and what they want to do now is they want to if some kid withdraw some school they want to generate an automatic report to DCF even though there's been no claim of abuse and they now want these parents to check in with the state every year I may have the bill numbers wrong one is vaccine one is homeschooling but these homeschoolers are pretty dedicated they have strict curriculum it's not always religious

30:29and they feel that the states coming in here interfering with their ability to raise their kids and teach them I didn't homeschool my kids I can't imagine how hard it would be to do it but these parents have every right to do it oh absolutely um is this a knee jerk reaction to the water berry incident where the gentleman set the house on fire and then the girl tore the torres girl Mimi Torres and uh from Farmington whose family moved to new Britain and and they took along her dead carcassist is just absolutely I know it's crazy insane what I'm saying I know the water berry one was the sort of the excuse to get this ball rolling but that was a child or for the lack of a better term he was 30 years old when they found him a child that had been reported to DCF multiple times that really just was sort of lost in the system and they want to say well that's because he was homeschool but really that's a failure of DCF and the failure of the Democratic government the protective child even though complaints were raised that is a much more

31:29complicated uh case or story than I think they're letting out to believe and I don't really think it equates to homeschoolers well it is in the fact that they're the ones maybe DCF and government that made the mistake and the uh but it's it's the it's the homeschooling families that are paying the penalty let's move to a Senate bill 450 and act concerning the standards of care for immunization so my understanding is that we now all of a sudden Connecticut say oh no no no we don't like what the federal government saying about vaccines when they were forcing you to get a vaccine during COVID this is the COVID vaccine I'm talking about certain vaccines listen I think everybody should get you know polio measles bumps listen I mean you make your own decision but I know I got it for myself and or I got them and I know my kids got them but this is sort of saying that okay we're not going to listen to federal government anymore we're going to allow our uh department of public health our health uh person

32:32to tiny to come up with the vaccine schedule here regardless of what the federal government says so they'll they'll listen to the government when it suits their needs and then okay listen I have to tell you it's all about judgment with me all do respect to our public health commissioner if it was up to her I believe 2026 we'd all still be in mass with plexiglass and half the restaurants would still be closed I mean this woman was called a restaurant to be shut down three years into the to the pandemic I really she's probably qualified for the job but I really do question the judgment uh I concerned about her judgment at time well we should question that's our that was our that's our job as lawmakers I just want to add one thing to that though or or clarify something does this mean a forced uh covid vaccination for every man woman and child an adult living in Connecticut I don't know if that's what it means per se what I think it

33:34means is that she now or that department can dictate uh what vaccines are required I don't know if it mainly has to do with school children or kids answering school if that's for everybody because you know even the federal government says okay the covid vaccine we really only recommended for 65 and older I remember that yeah later stand she may she may say oh no no we disagree with that we think everybody should get it but so I'd have to eight you know what I look forward to listening to that public hearing so I could be more informed exactly what the government's looking to do that's scary if if what I just mentioned uh it's true I hope it's not but forcing every you know law-abiding man woman and child citizen of the state of Connecticut to to be forced into a covid vaccination particularly when we're receiving data uh now that we're a few years away from it and and what it's been doing to some people everybody each individuals um are uh listen our biology may be the same but our chemistry is different and everybody's body each individual body

37:42you know um what where's the mental health bill that there should be you mean mental health try to help well yeah I mean if we're trying why are why are we always why is it always the uh law biting a gun owner that's got to take it on the chin well they seem to be the only ones that obey these things right that's my point yes if you're a lawful gun owner you're probably obeying the law anyway and criminals disregard the law probably don't even know what the law is well that's why they're criminals so yeah right that's that's why they're criminals but we had a sit through a nine ten hour judicial hearing yesterday where everybody told us that oh no everything that ice does is bad well listen you know I'm not for law enforcement shooting anybody unless they're protecting themselves but if somebody's a if they if these towns would cooperate with the federal government and they have a detainer on a criminal that they're looking for wouldn't it be better to pick this person up in a courthouse or in a jail cell that having to figure out what how to grab him on a street that's what happened in Minnesota had they had just given the

38:46criminal to the authorities looking for him while they had him in custody there would be no confrontations on the street so really they're sort of causing that the some of the problems that they're fighting again what would you recommend to a person who is who feels passionate about any or all of these bills and they want to come down and they're planning on speaking or or maybe maybe it's too late to sign up but I always say strengthen numbers when you show the majority party that you know by just by your presence being there even if you're not speaking but but they see you there that sends a message I did one thing is for sure and I think you probably remember this we do read all the testimony so if there's a hundred people signed up and 200 people submitted you'll see that the legislators sitting there and for the most part we're going through the testimony we're reading it so please submit and as a state legislator this isn't the federal

44:02like well he gets more people know the amount of people are the same you know it's it's just more rural out there it gets more geography that yeah and and to that point right it's a lot more traveling to that's especially on the campaign trail tell us about yourself we're where you from where'd you grow up and what did you grew up in Connecticut I grew up in Wallingford Connecticut have roots there actually so then I was going to go into history the family but let's wait for that so grew up in Wallingford moved to I went to Xavier High School and then I moved to Subdington Connecticut after I landed a job at ESPN I wanted to be a bit closer on proximity to that and make my commute from 45 minutes to 15 or less and then I decided you know what I don't really like hearing the highway so let me move to Hebron which is then 45 minutes away from from work but it's also quiet was it worth the long trip in the Bristol so worth it okay so worth it yes the

45:02commute I would listen to books on audio books right on the way in okay yeah turn turn into the Bible as well which is awesome the good yeah yeah so that that's a little bit of a walk through my my residence in Connecticut I have an education from Southern Connecticut State University and in psychology and actually took a focus in video production ran out into New York City and did freelance for a little while there and then didn't want to take the job offer that was provided or offered went back to Connecticut and ran it into our golf facility for about a year loved it didn't want to buy that and then landed in ESPN for 20 years but you're no longer there I am no longer there I stayed there for 20 years because I love the people I worked with sure I know that's those relationships sure didn't really love the work that I was doing but those relationships

46:03were important to me and the people that I made family there when did you leave I left in 2022 so recently what are you doing now yes I am managing properties and live in a pretty thin budget life right now so depending on how November goes I either have a job or I get a job yeah but you gotta understand something let's see you know when you when you win it's not a it's not a little job that you can make make a living on I don't and it wasn't intended a whole lot I really don't need a whole lot of if I make 40,000 I'll be thrilled but I don't like hearing that I need a job so I'm I'm running for office that's not what it is okay I don't I don't I thought I heard that a little bit in there I appreciate you Claire for offering an opportunity to declare yeah please yeah that's not why I'm running that is absolutely not if I needed a job I would go get a job I don't need it right now we're getting to a point where it's like well do I keep pulling from savings or what this is important let's let's talk about why I got into politics in general first

47:11look when when did you when did you decide that you wanted to do this so when did I decide that the system was absolute that you wanted to run mess well the assistant was better disgusting mess for decades I realized I realized that in 2020 when the religious exemption was being stripped from all goes even beyond that well that's when I woke up to the fact that we are not listened to by our legislative body what especially when it's a super majority they can do whatever they want I heard Martin Looney say that's the children are the chattel of the state that year there were 5,000 people outside the capital making noise and protesting during that discussion they can hear us inside they still just pushed through there was plenty of testimony it was a longest testimony in history in Connecticut 23 and a half hours public testimony so I was disgusted with that process I did not know what to do other than continue to you know seek the ear of the representative um and have zoom calls or calls with Kathy it falls on deaf ears it seems every time now maybe my voice

48:17is the minority I don't think so the people seem real fed up as I walk this campaign trail they seem extremely fed up and oppressed to some degree sure um so I got into this race in 24 having just learned what a republican town committee was in 23 no so November 23 I meet the chair of the republican town committee at election day getting the the information at the end of the day because I was looking into election information walk forward a little bit slow walk right now I hear you it's a little painful but we'll get there um I'm being elected chair to the republican town committee in March you were elected chair I was elected chair three months after I learned about it is it a job that no one really signed up for that nobody there's no one wanted I would say generally speaking in the republican town committees around the state yes there's a void it's a thankless job I get that there's a fact you a state in the party in general you need a

49:21strong personality yes and I feel the stronger you are the stronger your party will be in town the weaker you are yeah the weaker the party will be I'll agree with that yeah and so that that republican town committee had a chair by the name of a man of an eciano before this particular yeah I really use on the um state central as well yes she was she pulled out the rug from under this rtc and left to go to the republic the democrat party I've heard of this story that's right you're refreshing my memory so that there was there was a void there was disarray there was just it wasn't chaos but it was not it wasn't organized and moving forward with a plan and having a bunch of buy-in and volunteer participation in that group so it was it was it was it was hurt right so they're limping along keeping it together doing a good job I think I say limping along they're doing they were doing what they could do with the people they had there who were doing things right there's a lot of volunteer organizations that have a bunch of people a whole bunch of

50:22people and then they have like five people that do things okay so let's go back to your candidacy this yeah I got into the weeds well that's okay that's it's my job to bring you back in thank you that was in 2024 that was in 23 and a 24 yeah right okay so you ran in 2024 I did was this a house seat no it was this very same race for against against Kathy Austin so we'll talk about how I got into that right well let's talk about yeah you can talk about how you got into it I want to know obviously you you didn't come up on top of that race that's true what was what was the difference in the how many points does she win by I was 43.1% to her 57 and change okay so that's quite a difference on par with basically every other candidate throughout the years okay so here's the interesting thing that if I'm hearing this correctly you get one of the rare chances to have a Mulligan a do-over yes and but you've got now the hindsight yes of already having been because only people if they're going into something blind

51:28they don't know what to expect and it's easy and it's easy to lose that yeah where you say okay if I could go back and do this differently I see where I messed up I see what I could have done different you have that opportunity now absolutely to build on the momentum of a 24 campaign and if I can I'm going to I'm going to walk you through so in that two weeks before I was elected chair I was talking to my wife and said if no one runs against Kathy I'm going to have to do it in a response which is accurate is we don't know how to do that we didn't know how to run a campaign I didn't even know three months earlier what an RTC was how am I going to know how to run a campaign so I'm being elected chair Rob Demscott in Orange comes in and says we need someone to run from the 19th district against Kathy Austin and we will show you how so my wife looks over at me and immediately goes and back and says I have a candidate for you and I'm up front signing all the paperwork and doing all the things to be chair so simultaneously I am new chair I am running for Senate and then we run my wife for registrar which is becomes a contested race

52:36because we weren't happy with the sitting Republican registrar the Democrats are real happy with them and they lit up the river east which is a local paper and I think it was the largest turnout for a Republican primary for registrar if there ever are any Norwich has got to be a tough three campaign cookie to crack three initiatives Norwich is a tough cookie to crack yes a lot of Dems yes yes so knowing the I'm listening to you and you lost by he gots pretty handedly sure Norwich I got crushed in Norwich five thousand votes yeah is that was that as far as numbers are concerned is that the the the number that you lost by was it five thousand votes or approximately five thousand votes I think it was twenty thousand and change for me actually having on my phone twenty thousand and change I don't have her numbers all right so my point though is changed and then yeah it's like six issues how do you then turn those voters who went once went for Austin or

53:37I can describe that how do you how do you turn them into Jason voters so as I said didn't know anything about politics no name no name coming in first time late didn't know how to you know no name right campaign it's a mom and pop campaign literally my wife and I figure out how to run a campaign out of our kitchen ad hoc support from people who are behind the campaign and really believe in the opportunity here but ninety nine percent of it is my wife and I run in a campaign and learning how to put the car together while we're driving it so keep that in mind as we walk through the process of run in a campaign and being you want we're in name recognition you want you really want a professional operation behind you we wouldn't have that most some of that was who do we trust and some of that was we don't know anybody and so that was some of the decisions and some of the the reality behind the twenty twenty four campaign the other aspect is we got funded the day before the deadline so it was fully funded but that's August 28th yeah I know so we're

56:47um you know I look at it as a three-legged stool you have to have a platform yeah um you have to have the finances uh and by the way platform and messaging if you I mean you could have a platform but if nobody knows what your platform is um and why you're running and what you kind of change that you want to effectuate then it's pointless so that kind of goes in tandem uh fund raising and name recognition getting out there and being everywhere in the 19th senatorial district I would imagine since uh you've already run for this by two two years ago that you're you're gaining momentum as far as the name recognition is concerned so let's move over to your platform sure tell me what what what what would be the first bill that you would write when you get elected oh boy there are so many to choose from uh I would love to um repeal the religious exemption legislation that went through in 2020 but understand that's not going to hit people's bottom line

57:48well in the end and it's not everybody's I'm going to tell you really quickly because I want you to continue I don't want to interrupt you here but let's say you win yeah I'm not expecting the Republicans to gain either chamber right this upcoming November so I would think that that bill is dead on arrival to the chairman most bills will be yeah but writing the bills that that speak the voice of the people in the district I think that's what we need to do okay so that the democrats when they swipe them down or what they've done this year was take a bill um basically deny it or whatever it is and squash it and then they rewrite it as their own and take credit for it they might happen this year I know someone I think Rob Samson or yeah right so they'll take credit for your stuff but after they just crush your stuff so either way right good legislation for the people that represents what the need is in the district and most of that right now is affordability like property taxes are through the roof it's absurd but what is the what is the cause of that

58:53and my perspective is the cause of that is the unfunded mandates that and underfunded mandates that come from the legislative body into the municipalities that force the municipalities then to raise your property taxes because there I believe are 1400 roughly of those that say you must do this the state says so town or else you don't get xyz extra money or this grant coming through and we're not going to give you any or we won't give you full funding for that um press into your uh into your community okay so I would love to make that legislation eliminate the unfunded mandates but there's so much more to that eliminate or say if it's not funded or it's or it's partially funded then it's optional and it doesn't impact the grants that could come your way they're talking about eliminating municipal property tax okay eliminating municipal property who's that they're the Republicans okay I mean I there's already in fact there's already a plan love it what do we talk to was if any
