The 39-year-old beat-out strong competition from Timothy Shalame, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawk, and Jesse Plemons. It marked his first victory in that category. The movie's sinners, a vampire thriller said in 1932 Mississippi, follows the brothers as they tried to launch a nightclub for black, patrons only to face a deadly supernatural force. That same night, the cast picked up the award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Plenty of people thought Shalame or DiCaprio had it locked, but those who caught Jordan's layer of performance saw why he earned it. As the only black actor nominated, the moment carried extra weight for his career. Just a day earlier, at the NAACP Image Awards, Jordan grabbed Intertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture Honors.
