Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum's big electoral reform bill hit a roadblock this week. Lawmakers in the Lower House of Congress voted it down on Wednesday, March 11th. They said no because it lacked the supermajority needed for constitutional changes. The vote was close with 259 in favor and 234 against plus one abstention. Scheinbaum's usual partners, the Green Party and the Labor Party, pulled their support at the last minute, dooming the measure. Scheinbaum pitched the plan back in late February to boost democracy and get more citizens involved. It aimed to slash election costs by a quarter, cut Senate seats, and add more oversight to voting bodies. Critics called it a power grab by her ruling party. They worried it would centralize too much control. For context, Mexico's elections cost $3,550 million last year.
