Metsa's Reliable Defense Boosts Sabres

The Buffalo Sabers added some big defensemen at the trade deadline, but they've had a

steady performer in Zac Metsa stepping up since Connor Timmins, got her back on December

18th.

This 27-year-old has filled in reliably on the third pairing, showing he's ready for

the National Hockey League.

Metsa joined the organization as an undrafted free agent and impressed at a prospect's

tournament.

The Sabers signed him to a two-year contract worth $775,000 per year in the offseason after

strong play with their minor lead team in Rochester.

He's been with the big club full-time since the injury.

Despite standing just five feet nine inches and weighing 181 pounds, Metsa battles hard

for pucks and stays composed on both ends.

His hockey sense stands out and he's posted solid numbers, 16 goals and 85 points in

139 minor league games as a plus 34, plus two goals and four points in 34 National Hockey

League games as a plus 16.

Goaltenders and teammates see him as a safety blanket on defense and he even served as

captain for Rochester this season before his call-up.

That leadership adds value beyond the stats.

As the Sabers pushed toward the playoffs, Metsa deserves a steady spot on the bottom pairing

alongside the new additions.

His reliability could help stabilize the blue line for a deep run.
