Mets' Pitching Staff: Warren's Rollercoaster Ride

On April 30, the Metz pitching staff has been a non-stop carousel this season, with

right-hander Austin Warren riding it harder than anyone.

The 29-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Giants back in January, then optioned

and recalled like clockwork over a dozen times by my count for injuries and fresh arms.

Solid stats though, 3.14 ERA in majors, strong ground balls and walks under control.

These hit like a storm, starting with Griffin cannings ruptured left the killies in

late June, sidelining him for the year.

Paul Blackburn landed on the 15-day I.L. with shoulder trouble, Danielle Nunez nursing

an elbow sprain that might need Tommy John.

Sean Manaya finally activated from the 60-day list after oblique and elbow woes, but rehab

was rough at 6.27 ERA.

Fans and brass feeling the squeeze in a tight NLE scrap with the fillies.

It's fully healthy on paper now, with Manaya, Sangha, Montes, Holmes and Peterson, but

depth losses like canning, Blackburn, McGill, mean bullpen.

Taxed hard, Warren stepped up big, like four innings of relief versus the Giants, but

gets shuttled since he's optionable.

Lately, they designated Carl Edwards Jr. for Simon after his strong six innings, one

run, and called up Dom Hamel for his big lead debut.

From AAA Rico Garcia, DFAed for Sangha's return, despite shut-out frames, Zack Popstein

cheap for groundball help.

Warren optioned again for Hamel, but expect him back soon.

As the trade deadline looms, Metz might hunt starters, or just ride the health wave.

Either way, Warren's versatility keeps him in the mix for that next.
