Colombian bartender Erica Boyero threw it overboard from a cruise ship and it washed up four years later on Tatlo's beach in Stanley, Tasmania. Local Walker Diane Charles founded and tracked down Erica through details in the note. Diane enlisted locals and a scholar to translate the Spanish message which included Erica's name, Colombian address, and fax number. The rough wording spoke of life's possibilities and good fortune. A fax led to their first contact, turning a random fine into a deep connection. Over the decades, the women shared major life events from afar, by the arrival of children and Erica's move to Germany. They built a bond despite the distance, staying in touch through letters and calls. Recently, Erica made the trip from Germany to Tasmania her top priority. While nearby in Kuala Lumpur, she booked a flight just to catch up over coffee.
