Max Scherzer Shines in Spring Training

Through two starts, he has pitched eight and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. His improved health seems to be the big difference this year. In his debut earlier this month, Scherzer threw four no-hit innings with one walk and one strikeout. He followed that up Saturday with four and two-thirds innings, giving up two hits and two walks but no earned runs while fanning five. His fastball averaged 94 miles per hour and topped out at 95.8. Last season, thumb and nerve problems limited Scherzer and flared up after about 50 pitches. Now he says his thumb feels good, letting him pitch like himself again. The three-time Sai Young winner signed a one-year deal with Toronto worth $3 million guaranteed plus incentives up to 10 million.
