Toronto Maple Leafs Captain Austin Matthews is out for the rest of the regular season after suffering a grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion in a neon knee hit from Anaheim Duck's defenseman Radco Goudus. Goudus received the five game suspension for the play. Doctors won't know for another week or two if Matthews needs surgery, but the team hopes he can avoid it and recover fully over the summer. The Leafs players show little reaction right away on the ice, with teammates like Morgan Riley and William Nylander saying they did not see the hit. Clearly, they ramped up the physicality later and won the game, but many felt it came too late. Insider Elliott Friedman says the injury could spark new talks about Matthews' future. He's in the third year of a four-year deal paying him $13 million, $250,000 against the cap, and he can sign an extension starting July 1st, 2027.
