Massive Scrapyard Fire in Birmingham

0:00On April 1st, firefighters rushed to a massive blaze at a scrapyard in Birmingham's Kings Northern neighborhood this morning. It kicked off around 10.30 a.m. on April 1st at Alexander's Wharf on Lifford Lane. Dozens of crews from West Midlands Fire Service jumped in right away to battle the flames. Witnesses nearby heard, with sounded like shotgun blasts as gas canisters exploded. The fires sent thick smoke billowing through the area, forcing local workers to hunker down. Those folks got told to stay indoors and seal up doors and windows to avoid the haze. Traffic stayed light with police blocking off parts of the road, though some could still pass through. By 3 p.m., the response dialed back to seven fire engines. Crews kept hitting hot spots and dampening timber across the site. Officials say they'll stick around a while longer, with police now guiding business owners back to their spots as Lifford Lane partially reopens.
