Mandell Out, Cherry In: Badgers OL Shakeup

0:00On April 16th, Wisconsin Badgers fans got some tough news on the offensive line. Starting right guard Emerson Mandel is done for the rest of spring practice after foot surgery. Head coach Luke Fickle confirmed it Tuesday, saying Mandel will be sidelined through the month but ready for fall camp. Mandel joined as a four star recruit in the class of 2024 and quickly rose up the depth chart. Last season, he earned the starting right guard spot before shifting to right tackle amid some line shuffling. The red shirt sophomore played every one of the 12 games. He's no stranger to setbacks, though, with prior lower body injuries hitting him in last year's spring and fall. This latest one put him in a boot right after Tuesday's practice, forcing him out early in what was a strong spring run at guard. Now it opens the door wider for Arkansas transfer, Blake Cherry, a freshman the staff loves. Offensive line coach Eric Mateos could give him more reps with the first team, maybe locking down a bigger roll come fall. Expect Mandel back strong when he counts, giving the Badgers depth to build on as they gear up for another big 10 grind.
