Man Sentenced for Fatal Crash, Killing Girlfriend

He pleaded guilty to two counts of causing deaths by dangerous driving and one count of causing serious harm by dangerous driving. His girlfriend, 23-year-old Chloe Glassen, died at the scene, while 19-year-old Shakina Abdullah passed away days later in hospital. The bus driver suffered serious injuries. Rigny drove through a stop sign and a give-way sign at high speed, ignoring five warning signs near a railway crossing and intersection. He was going 86 kilometers per hour when he teabone to school bus on Simkin Road at Karunye. The judge found he deliberately failed to stop even though he had drunk alcohol and used cocaine the night before but was not impaired during the crash. The judge handed down three years and eight months in jail, with a non-parallel period of two years and seven months. Rigny also faces a 13-year driving disqualification, backdated to the crash date but not counting custody time. Outside court, Chloe's mother, Bell Glassen, called the outcome fair, saying it would mess up Rigny's life enough. She remembered her daughter as fun loving and the life of the party, heartbroken that Chloe had removed her seatbelt and suffered from internal injuries.
