The awards come from the Columbia Journalism School and the Neiman Foundation at Harvard University. Jeff Hobbs took home the Lucas book prize for his work on a working mother facing homelessness in America. The $10,000 award recognizes strong writing, deep research, and real social focus. Meanwhile, William Dowrymple earned the Mark Linton Prize for history with his book about how Ancient India changed the world. It also carries a $10,000 payout for the same high standards. Two writers receive Lucas' work in progress awards, each worth $25,000. Dana Boyd is tackling politics and power behind the census while Kareem's Idan explores themes in the shadow of the cage.
