Louisville's March Madness Legacy

0:00On March 16, Louisville's men's basketball team is set to make their 45th NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2026 Big Dance, their second straight underhead coach, Pat Kelsey. The Cardinals boast a strong all-time record of 76 wins in 44 losses, with 10 trips to the final four and three national titles in, 1980, 1986 and 2013. The program got off to a slow start, only reaching the tournament once before 1951, but Coach Peck Hickman changed that with four. Appearances in his final years, including the first final four in 1959. Then, Denny Crum arrived in 1972 and elevated everything, leading Louisville to 23 tournament bids over 30 years, six, final fours, and those first two championships. Crum's era built a powerhouse, but replacing him meant bringing in Rick Patino, another Hall of Famer, who added a final four in 2005, and the third title in 2013. Scandals hit hard later, with a self-imposed ban in 2016, and Patino's firing in 2017, followed by tough years under Chris Mack.

1:08And Kenny Payne, Kelsey's arrival last season ended a six-year drought, though they fell in the first round to Craten. Louisville shines as topseats, going 12 and 2 as a number one, and 12 and 1 as a number two, with 21 sweet 16s and dominance over lower seeds. As the tournament tips off later this week, the Cardinals carry that championship legacy into another shot at March Glory.
