Lions Secure Kicker Bates with Exclusive Rights Tender

They've tendered Kicker-Jeg Bates an exclusive rights free agent offer, which is a one-year contract at the league minimum salary of $1 million, $75,000. This tender lets Bates sign the deal or opt out for the season. It works because he only has two accrued seasons in the NFL, making him eligible along with other young players on expiring contracts. Earlier this off season, the Lions handed out similar offers to three others, and all signed right away. Offensive linemen, Michael Neacy, running back, Jacob Sailors, and Cornerback Nick Whiteside. Bates showed promise in his rookie year of 2024 with nearly 90% field goal accuracy. Last season, that slipped to around 80%, though five of his seven misses came from 50 yards or more, and he nailed every kick from 39 yards and in.
