Lions' Defensive End Gap: Draft Focus

The NFL League year kicked off one week ago, letting teams lock in trades and free agent

deals right away.

The Detroit Lions have been on the move, with General Manager Brad Holmes trading running

back David Montgomery and releasing Tackle, Taylor Decker.

Now, with spots still open before the draft, their biggest gap stands out a defensive end.

The Lions lost key debt there this off season.

Al Quadin-Mahamed joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Josh Pascal got cut and Tyrus Wheat signed with the Dallas Cowboys.

That leaves just three back-ups behind.

Star Aiden Hutchinson, Tyler Lacey, Amod Hassanine, and a new one-year addition, DJ Wantham.

After a so-so, nine-and-eight record in 2025, fans in the front office expected more following

the team's 2023 NFC Championship run.

A young roster fueled Super Bowl hopes, but last year's 49 sacks, fourth best in the

league, and a franchise high under homes and coach Dan.

Campbell came mostly from Hutchinson alone.

Hutchinson bounced back strong from his 2024 leg injury to stay among the top pass

rushers.

Still, the team knows he needs reliable help to keep pressure of consistently, especially

after those departures thin the group.

Heading into the 2026 NFL draft in April, Detroit holds nine picks and must target

at least one or two edge rushers for the long haul.

Even if they snag a free agent soon, building around Hutchinson is key to a real playoff

push.
