As a kid, he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football, even earning a shot at pro baseball right out of high school. Instead, he picked football and starred at the University of Alabama under coach Bear Brian. There, despite a bad knee injury, he helped lead the team to a national title in 1964. That college success put him on the map for pro scouts from both the NFL and the rival American football league. In 1965, the New York Jets took him first overall in the AFL draft and signed him to a groundbreaking contract worth $400, $27,000. His good looks in bold style quickly made him a national sensation. He's loved his charisma, but his biggest spotlight came in Super Bowl 3 in January 1969.

1:01The Jets were huge underdogs against the Baltimore Colts, yet Nameth backed up his confidence with a sharp performance in a 16-7 upset. Victory. He earned most valuable player honors, proving the AFL could hang with the big leagues. That win helped push the NFL and AFL to merge fully in 1970. For 13 pro seasons, mostly with the Jets and a stint with the Los Angeles Rams, Nameth passed for more than 27,000 yards and one, 173 touchdowns. Knee problems cut into his numbers, but his leadership kept fans hooked. He retired in 1977 and entered the pro football hall of fame in 1985. Later, Nameth acted in movies, did commentary, and spoke out on player health issues. His flair turned football into big-time entertainment and made quarterbacks into superstars.
