Hey kids, welcome to Junior's for Jesus.
0:03
Go grab your Bibles.
0:04
We're gonna be digging in
0:06
and learning some really exciting stories.
0:10
This week, we're learning about how Jesus came into the world
0:13
in a section we're calling light at last.
0:17
Yesterday, we learned about how Jesus would come
0:20
to call us to repentance.
0:22
Well, today, kids, we're gonna learn about
0:24
how that story began.
0:27
Our memory verse for this week is Isaiah,
0:29
chapter nine, verse six,
0:32
for unto us a child is born,
0:35
unto us a son is given,
0:37
and the government will be upon his shoulder,
0:40
and his name will be called wonderful,
0:43
counselor, mighty God,
0:46
everlasting father, prince of peace.
0:49
Isaiah, chapter nine, verse six.
0:55
Monday, Gabriel visits Zacharias.
0:59
Luke, chapter one, verse five through 18.
1:03
Several months before the messenger was to be born,
1:06
God sent the angel Gabriel to the temple in Jerusalem
1:11
to tell Zacharias about it.
1:13
Now Zacharias was a priest who, like the other priest,
1:17
was taking his regular turn to help with the temple services.
1:21
He and his wife Elizabeth lived many miles away.
1:26
What does the Bible tell us about them?
1:28
Luke, chapter one, verses five through nine, tell us,
1:31
there was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea.
1:36
A certain priest named Zacharias
1:39
of the division of Abija.
1:42
His wife was of the daughters of Aaron,
1:45
and her name was Elizabeth,
1:47
and they were both righteous before God,
1:50
walking in all the commandments and ordinances
1:53
of the Lord, blameless.
1:55
But they had no children,
1:57
because Elizabeth was barren,
1:59
and they were both well-advanced in years.
2:02
And so it was that while he was serving
2:05
as priest before God in the order of his division,
2:08
according to the custom of the priesthood,
2:11
his lot fell to burn incense
2:14
when he went into the temple of the Lord.
2:16
While the lamb was being sacrificed
2:19
that day on the altar in the temple court,
2:22
Zacharias was standing in the holy place
2:25
at the altar of incense
2:27
before the curtain that separated the most holy place
2:31
from the holy place.
2:33
And as he burned incense on that altar,
2:36
a sweet smelling cloud went up from it,
2:39
just like his prayer went up to God.
2:42
At the same time, the people were praying outside
2:45
in the temple court,
2:46
and as they waited for Zacharias to come out
2:49
and bless them, they were getting worried.
2:52
Why was he taking so long?
2:55
You see, they didn't know that he was standing
2:57
before the golden altar,
2:59
and he suddenly saw a shining angel standing
3:03
in the right side of the altar.
3:06
Zacharias was surprised and frightened.
3:09
You see, he forgot that God's messengers
3:11
stood on the right side of the altar,
3:14
and so there was no reason to be afraid.
3:17
What did the angel tell him?
3:19
Well, verse 12 through 17, tell us.
3:21
And when Zacharias saw him,
3:23
he was troubled and fearful upon him,
3:25
but the angel said to him,
3:26
do not be afraid, Zacharias,
3:28
for your prayer is heard,
3:29
and your wife Elizabeth will bear you as said.
3:32
You shall call his name John,
3:34
and you will may have joy and gladness,
3:36
and many will rejoice at his birth.
3:39
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord,
3:41
and children neither wine or strong drink.
3:45
He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit
3:47
even from his mother's womb,
3:49
and he will turn many of the children of Israel
3:51
to the Lord their God.
3:54
He will also go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah
3:57
to turn hearts of the fathers to the children,
4:01
and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,
4:04
to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
4:08
Zacharias and his wife had prayed many years for a baby,
4:12
but God had never answered their prayers.
4:15
And now, because they were old,
4:17
it seemed practically impossible that it would ever happen.
4:21
What did Zacharias say to the angel about all that?
4:25
And Zacharias said to the angel,
4:27
how shall I know this?
4:28
For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.
4:33
So now, let's apply it.
4:35
That cloud of incense from the golden altar
4:38
in the holy place was a symbol of Jesus' perfect life
4:44
being added to the imperfect prayers of the people.
4:48
And that made their prayers beautiful,
4:50
so that God would accept them.
4:53
You know, that's still the way that our prayers are heard today.
