Life Inmate Convicted for Hidden Cellphone

A man already serving life in prison for murdering a Kansas sheriff has now been convicted on a contraband charge. 44-year-old Scott Chiever pleaded no contest to attempt a trafficking after prison guards found a hidden cell phone during a routine search. The phone turned up on November 22, 2024. Tucked inside a homemade knee brace, Chiever was wearing, at Lansing Correctional, Facility. He entered the plea during a hearing on March 20. Chiever has been behind bars since shooting Greenwood County Sheriff Matthew Samuels back in January 2005. This latest conviction adds to his record for trying to sneak in the illegal device. Prison officials stress how dangerous cell phones can be inside facilities. They allow unmonitor calls that could lead to violence or threats against staff and other inmates. With the police secured, Chiever faces extra time on top of his life sentence, highlighting ongoing efforts to keep contraband out of Kansas prisons.
