00Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, dear listeners, it's a just past 1 pm right here in South Africa. And it's our favorite day of the week, Yomul Ahad. It's the 25th day of our Ramadan, 1447 AH Alhamdulillah. And it corresponds to Sunday the 15th of March 2026. I am Ziyad Plarchies and with me are my co-hosts Nabiya and Issa Plarchies. Welcome to level up where we listen, learn and grow insha'Allah with Allah subha'ala wa ta'ala's guidance and we break down the week's news and talk about what really matters to young Muslims today. A WhatsApp line is open. The number is 0727861548. You can call in on 0118547022 or you can DM us on social media.
01We at I love Zakom. That's I-L-O-V-E, Z-A-C-O-M. We are on Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Threads and upscrolled. So a lot has happened this week. A lot of things in the news. But I think the most important thing that we should be focusing on this week is the last 10 days of Ramadan. Let's reflect on the month. What we've achieved. We started the month with lots of goals, I'm sure, that we wanted to achieve during the month. Alhamdulillah, some of us have achieved our goals. Some of us have exceeded our goals. But for those of us who haven't, we shouldn't be despondent because Ramadan went so quickly. And sometimes we want to do things. But there's lots of other things that happened during the month.
01And we might have just done with I think it's something small, but maybe we broke a habit. Maybe we stopped idle talk or backbiting. We should continue and try and continue these and carry these values over after Ramadan in inshaAllah. But one of the things that a lot of us do during the month of Ramadan is give charity. And charity is not only exclusive to Ramadan. And we had the pleasure of listening to Molana Abdul Rahman Leili at the Nizamiya Masjid on Friday for Juma. And he kind of packaged the whole thing well. And I spoke to him afterwards and I said, please could you either send us a recording or could we, with your permission, use the lecture that you have spoken about, about Saka. So that our listeners could also benefit from it in inshaAllah.
01SubhanAllah Alhamdulillah, he said that no problem. He sent us the recording for the Friday lecture and said, Bismillah. So let's take a listen to what Molana Abdul Rahman Leili had to say at the Friday Juma lecture at Nizamiya Masjid. We remind ourselves to show gratitude to Allah SubhanAllah for blessing us with the opportunity of witnessing this beautiful month of Ramadan.
06More than two-thirds of the month has passed already. SubhanAllah, and we need to evaluate how we have spent our Ramadan against the Ramadan of Habibun Al-Mustafa Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam. With that being said, we sent abundant rudin salawad upon Habibun Al-Mustafa Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam. We served as the best of examples for us in every situation. SubhanAllah under every constraint in times of joy and happiness, in aspects of our worship, as well as in times of challenge. May Allah SubhanAllah who would allow us to seek to emulate everything that he said Allah salallahu alayhi wa sallam. So that inshaAllah we will be able to attain eternal felicity. The verse of Qur'an that I have recited before you is a verse where Allah is kind of with the alas speaks of some of the categories of people who are eligible recipients of charity but most specifically the eligible recipients of a very specific type of charity and that being Zaka.
11I appreciate the acknowledge that as I mentioned two thirds of the month of Ramadan has passed. We also place in record that Ramadan is not the only month in which we should be charitable but we appreciate from the Ahadith of Habibun Al-Mustafa Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam that this was the month in which he salallahu alayhi wa sallam was the most charitable. So, albeit that he was synonymous with being generous and charitable, this was the month in which he salallahu alayhi wa sallam expanded most of his charity. That being said, the idea of discharging of Zaka is not exclusive to the month of Ramadan but maybe because we are generally premised on the Gregorian calendar we find it somewhat easier to link our Zaka. Because that's the one point in the lunar history calendar when Subhanallah we all acknowledge fully.
11I recall having spent a Jumrah, Subhanallah was our August Jumrah in congregation some 363 days ago. So, it was at the midpoint of last Ramadan that we shared a Jumrah and in that Jumrah we reflected on a few things. I'm sure you attended so many Jumrah since then a whole years were that maybe you may not be able to record. Nonetheless, I'll recount two or three of them and then inshallah we have our discussion surrounding certain aspects related to Zaka. So, last Ramadan Allah gave us a beautiful opportunity way for taking five days leave we could set your 10 days in the house of Allah Subhanallah. In that point I've mentioned that one needed to have the ability to spot a good deal. We don't have the same deal this year. Also, we are a little bit late because we already subhanallah into the last 10 days of the month of Ramadan.
12The other was the idea we reflected on Ramadan from a macro perspective appreciating that Allah Subhanallah with Allah once us as the Ummah to observe Ramadan throughout the globe at exactly the same time. Now, I want to build on that today and make us appreciate that in a global population of some 8.3 billion, 2.3 billion of those Muslims, which means as we observe Jumrah today, a quarter of the world's population, Subhanallah is fasting. The moment of silence for us to allow that thought to settle, that one in every four people walking on the face of the earth is your brother and sister. Now, we want to take that into the discussions surrounding Zaka and charity by extension.
20So, there may be a few of us and I say few because it's actually a Dura. There may be a very select few of us who are not liable to pay Zaka. There is a Dura for you in itself. May Allah Subhanallah make us all people amongst those who are liable to pay Zaka. That means that we are making Dura that Allah Subhanallah grant you all lots of wealth. Now, say army. Good. So, Subhanallah with a global population or with 25% of the global population, a little bit more than 25% of the global population, being Muslim. How much of Zaka do you think the Ummah pays annually? So, there's no AFS-ordered financial statements to indicate how much of Zaka has been collected and how much of Zaka has been dispersed. Just by nature of many dynamics and the intricacies and the complexities of us living in different lands and being governed by different laws, etc., etc.
28But, somewhat more accurate estimates going to global Zaka being close to $1 trillion. And I want just to think of what can be the impact of $1 trillion. Directed to any particular course. Now, let's bring in these categories of Zaka or those who are eligible to receive Zaka. Allah Subhanallah with alias. In Namastradha Qawtulu Fukarah. Very early years Zaka is for the Fukarah. Now, we appreciate Subhanallah this concept of Fukarah. And today's modern day living we would speak about people who are somewhat below the poverty line. Appreciating that from our fit, we have a clear differentiation in terms of who is liable to pay Zaka and who is eligible to receive Zaka by virtue of the amount regarded as Nisa, the minimum threshold.
33Okay. So, this Subhanallah, we are well aware that one of the categories of Zaka would be those who are regarded as Pua. Now, in discussing the Pua, I want to introduce to us what is the macro objective of Zaka. So, we see it as an obligation. It's one of the foundational pillars of giving expression to our Islam. But what is the objective? We appreciate Subhanallah as we live from the Ahadith of Habibuna Mustafa Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. That some of the consequences of Zaka would be that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala purifies our wealth. It becomes a means of growth in our wealth. Ya Muhammadullah Reba wa Yudhissela Paat. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has stopped us from usually an interest. But Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has promised us increase by virtue of extending charity.
34To the extent that the growth strategy of a Muslim should be, the more I give in Allah's way, the more Allah will grant me. Is that just a statement I'm making? Allah says, in Allah has taram in al-Mukmininan for some while we are in al-Muljana. So, Allah uses the parlance, the language, the vocabulary, the rhetoric of trade. And Allah says, indeed I have purchased from the believers themselves and their wealth in exchange for Jannah. The macro objective of Zaka is to convert more of the Ummah. I said, the select few may be eligible to receive. And insha'Allah, our dua'ah is that very soon they become liable to contribute. The macro objective of Zaka is to convert more people from recipients to donors. Now, it's important to understand this when you look at the different categories.
36Because by and large, the many in which we discharge Zaka is like, oh, someone is poor, let me buy them a food ampere. That's an immediate need, it needs to be addressed. But coupled with this, when we look at the rest of the categories of Zaka, we appreciate that Zaka, from a macro objective, Subhanallah seeks to move people away from what the Hadith refers to as the lower hand to the upper hand. From Yadu Sufla to Yadul Ulya to be the upper hand, the hand that is giving. So, there's a very big developmental angle Subhanallah in terms of Zaka. Okay. Time not allowing us to spend too much of time there, let's go to some of the other categories. So Allah Subhanallah refers very distinctly and clearly and differentiate between those who are poor and those who are needy.
36At times, someone may not be poor, meaning they are not below the poverty line, meaning that they have more than the minimum threshold in the sub, but they may still be needy. Once again, talks to the developmental angle of Zaka. So someone is just battling to get par, scraping Subhanallah through week upon week, through month upon month. They somewhat become, with certain guardrails, one of the categories that are eligible to receive Zaka because of the macro objectives to convert more people from recipients to donors. While I'm in Aleyha as the third category, those people whose primary vocation Subhanallah, the way in which they spend all of their productive day is in the collection and distribution of Zaka. This is the third category of people who are entitled Subhanallah to the world of Zaka.
37Once again, with guardrails, it does not mean that those institutes, charitable organizations, public benefit organizations, non-profit organizations, can utilize your Zaka for administrative expenses. No, it would go towards salaries, but salaries particularly for the people whose co-function is the collection Subhanallah in the disbursement of Zaka. Wal muallafati kulubuhu. As a category that in a fit sense, so every translate, Wal muallafati kulubuhu, and those whose hearts are inclined towards Islam, which shows that they may be differing opinions between Fukaha and Juras, which shows that as a category, and we're talking somewhat theoretical now, as a category Subhanallah within certain guardrails, Zaka could be used for certain activities, initiatives, projects of people
38who are very close to coming into the way of Islam. Once again, a developmental angle. A developmental angle not restricted only to this transient temporal life of this world, but a developmental angle surrounding worrying and having a concern about the welfare of every human citizen of the globe, was regards to the Akhira, was very talk, and for the freeing of next. So, in classical fit, this referred to the very early times, when Subhanallah Zaka could be used to purchase the freedom of those who are in captivity. While today, some of the Fukaha and Juras, under the umbrella, the guise of this category, ask the question, are not people today engulfed in economic and financial slavery?
46Also, within certain guardrails, a category Subhanallah that could be implored, utilized, and avenue that could be implored and utilized with Zaka fans, to move people out of economic slavery. We come back to the verse of Qur'an, or a phrase from the verse I mentioned, Yamkhatullah, Riba, Ayyubus Salafat, Allah Subhanallah with Allah, having frowned and declared war on those who are involved in usually in interest, and Allah Subhanallah with Allah, having promised growth in charity. While Khari mean, so it may be that there are certain people who just based on a current cash flow situation, find themselves in debt, or being that they are not war, neither are they mean. They also become a category of people who are entitled and eligible to receive Zaka.
47Which shows that when a community has the correct understanding of Zaka and appreciates a certain individual who finds himself in debt not due to negligence, then Zaka could be used to settle his debt so that that particular person for argument sake who has an entrepreneurial flair may once again be able to start creating stimulation in their economy, which would mean what? That there's not only stimulation for him to be self-sustaining, but it creates employment for other people and it creates the ability of other people being able to earn and look after their families. We go to the macro objective of Zaka once again, which is to convert more people from recipients to Subhanallah to goness. What is the deal? And those who are out in the way of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
51So two examples of those who are regarded as being out in the way of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala One of them would be the person who is Subhanallah undertaking studies. And when we talk about studies, I think in the previous Jumaw we had reflected on the idea of Subhanallah, all knowledge stems from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala albeit that there is an added level of prominence and preference given to the revealed sciences from Quran and Hadith, etc. But also many of the applied sciences are not far in the pursuit of them are not far from being regarded as the worship of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Any studies undertaken to uplift the community and society and to fulfill Subhanallah your responsibility as the vice-children of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and the followers of Muhammad al-Alahi wa sallam could come under the embed of being in the part of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
52And naturally the other categories one that comes to our mind when we refer to Fisabil Allah. Those who are actively striving, yes many at times in the battlefield, at the forefront in the cold phase of protecting la ilaha illa Muhammad al-Rassoudullah. But that in the beautiful month of Ramadan, at the time of Jum'ah, Subhanallah wa Hads, wa Fouth, wa Dhraa, for brothers and sisters in many of the lands where they are being oppressed. And we ask Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala to grant ease in their situations and we ask Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala to grant liberation and more particularly for Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala to grant liberation to our brothers and sisters in Palestine. Appreciating that this is a very small point in the history of the Ummah of Habib-ul-Namus Tafar Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. For in all of our looked experience this is arguably the first time when Jum'ah hasn't been performed in the actual Masjid Masjid al-Aqsa and neither has Tarrawi, Salaah, a Tarrawi,
54praise being observed every night where people were freely able to access the Masjid may Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala allow us to see Masjid al-Aqsa in the right of our life times and as we gather in mess in our beautiful Masjid Subhanallah may Allah grant us the opportunity of visiting Masjid al-Aqsa in an out of the month of Ramadan, in the Arab and the last of the categories, what this is the way fairer, the one who finds himself distanced from his wealth which he may have allowed store of back home but finds himself in a distant land and is unable to handle to access his wealth, to see to his daily needs. This is also a category of person who is eligible for Saka. No, I appreciate we've got just two minutes remaining and I want to once again call on something that we shared three hundred sixty-three days ago, appreciating this time we are some five or six days from the end of the month of Ramadan.
54Other than the obligatory responsibility of discharging of Saka after one has held this up for a period of an entire year, each in every one of us as citizens of the Ummah of Habibun Al-Masjid Al-Muhammad A.S. 2.3 million in the global population upwards of conservatively two million in the South African population are all duty bound to give what is required to a Saka in Switzerland. The charity that we give because Allah has given us the opportunity of witnessing the month of Ramadan with the objective of making sure that those few who are currently eligible to receive Saka would also be able to have a sense of Farha, enjoy, and pleasure, and enjoyment on the day of reading. What's the amount? A little bit more than 35 breads. But personally, it lives in your household. What's the conservative estimate of two million muslims?
58Let Subhanallah brings us to what tell you. Some are 17 million breads that will be discharged on one day to bring happiness and joy Subhanallah in the population. May Allah Subhanallah allow us to appreciate that this is an obligation upon us and the macro impact that I just used the anecdote of Saka in Switzerland but the macro impact of what one trillion US dollars can bring to a global population. Appreciating the macro objective of the month of Ramadan is that Allah Subhanallah wants all of us once a year to have an heightened awareness around what? Around the food security needs of the global population. That's another reason why Allah Subhanallah makes it that we all fast at exactly the same time.
59Time having passed, Subhanallah, we close with a verse of Quran where Allah Subhanallah encourages us towards the urgency of spending. Where Allah Subhanallah says that Allah Subhanallah wants us to spend of his wealth. Before, a day will come. Before, a day will come when no transaction and no friendship will be able to avail you. And what will be the plea of your heart? Or Allah, can you send me back to the dunya for a short period of time? So that I may be able to give some charity and perhaps be counted amongst those who are righteous. May Allah Subhanallah want to appreciate the urgency of giving in the way of Allah Subhanallah
01and Allah Subhanallah and Allah Subhanallah become part of our great strategy. May Allah Subhanallah grant you what remains of the rest of the battle of Ramadan is one that is blessed in time, in value, in spiritual growth, and also in your economic growth, and may the day of aid insha'Allah be a day of happiness and also remembrance of Allah Subhanallah and Allah Subhanallah coupled with the obedience of Allah Subhanallah and Allah Subhanallah and a remembrance of those who are less fortunate than us. For the very informative talk, I really learnt a lot, Alhamdulillah. If you would like to join the conversation, our sub-line is 0727861548 or you can call in on 0118547022 or you can even DM us on at ILO's or come on social media, that's I-L-O-V-E,
05Z-A-C-O-M. Let's go for a break and when we get back, we will continue our discussion on charity and the last 10 days insha'Allah. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh and welcome back to level up. If you've just tuned in, we have heard all about Zakat from Mawlana Abdul Rahman Leili and right now we continue our discussion about charity and the last 10 days of Ramadan. If you would like to join the conversation, our sub-line is open, the number is 0727861548 or you can call in on 0118547022 or you can even DM us on at ILO's or come, that's I-L-O-V-E, Z-A-C-O-M. Alhamdulillah, the lecture from Mawlana Abdul Rahman Leili was really so enlightening. There are so many people who are eligible for receiving Zakat
07and this is what I like the most and it's most important, it's so important. The fact that it was ordained for us because we are supposed to be helping others not just keeping them where they are, you know, to level the playing field so to speak. You know, for the receiver to inshallah become a donor or a contributor. You know, to make sure that we are equal as we were always taught that we are supposed to be that no person is better or greater than another human being. Alhamdulillah, I think just, you know, when I heard it at Juma and I went to Mawlana afterwards and I said, you know, the way it was presented, the flow, everything, you know, the youngsters would say it's on point. Do they still say that another one? I'm not sure, but you know, the fact that he mentioned each category
08and how we should move from the lower hand to the upper hand that we should make do are that if we are not contributing that we become contributors inshallah, I mean. And that we don't stay, you know, in one position, we move forward. This is what we're talking about, listen, learn and grow inshallah. Inshallah. Level up. This is exactly it. And Islam is so easy and it's, you know, it's for everybody. There you have a person like he said that has lots of money overseas but finds themselves in a land where they don't have access to it. And this is exactly what's happening now. There's a conflict now in the Middle East. People could not have access to funds. They could be living in another country. Now they stuck. Now they're eligible for Zakat.
08And, you know, also the fact that he mentioned poor and needy. Yes, it's not just one, you know, just poor and needy. There is the poor and then there is the needy. There's two categories already. Yeah, people just think that poor and needy is one word. You know, and that's the people that are below the bread line. And those are the only people that are Zakatable. That's what they think. Yes. And Molana mentioned and broke it down and said there's poor and then there's needy. And if you didn't listen to it, please go back. If you missed that part, please go back and listen to the lecture. It is most beneficial, especially in the last ten days. You want to not only do a lot of Ibadah, but you want to gain a lot of knowledge that will be beneficial in this lecture. Alhamdulillah is very beneficial. So, if you missed it, it will be on SoundCloud, Radio-Islam International SoundCloud.
11InshAllah, we will share it as well. It will be on our website. ILoveCity.com. We'll have a video uploaded to YouTube inshAllah. So, it will be widely spread. So, just go back. I don't want to go over it because I don't want to spoil what Molana said. He put everything perfectly. Alhamdulillah. And I think let's leave it at that. Yes, Alhamdulillah. I just wanted to mention that he also said that the Prophet ﷺ was more generous during Ramadan. Yes. So, he was generous throughout the year. Yes. But more so during Ramadan and just going to leave it at that time. Yes, and something that we always say that charity is not... We mentioned that charity is not exclusive to Ramadan. So, a card is not exclusive to Ramadan. Yes. And that we must take away with us. And remember, that's one of the values that we should take away with us for Ramadan, is that we continue our charitable acts outside of Ramadan because there are people that are eligible for the card outside of Ramadan. Who are poor?
11Who are needy? Who are wayfarers? And, you know, we need to carry on contributing and carry on doing these charitable acts after Ramadan insha'Allah. Insha'Allah, I mean, yes. So, you mentioned one of the values. So, I'm just going to also, you know, like, continue with that, you know, because the Ramadan effect shouldn't just end with eat, you know. It shouldn't end on the 29th of 30th of Ramadan. So, yeah, it's that, you know, making sure that you continue with your ibar, they continue with the charity. They may just touch on maybe, like, four points or so, you know, that we can, four values that we can take with us from Ramadan throughout the year insha'Allah. So, there's that, the power of the small and the consistent, you know, where during Ramadan, so you might give a little charity daily. Or, let's not just speak about charity. It's also, read a few pages of the Qur'an every night. Maybe you do that, maybe even after Fajr or every night after Makhrib or something like that.
16So, let's take that with us, you know, keep a microhabit of charity and micro, I mean, as in a small habit of charity, even if it's just giving a bottle of water daily. Or, if it's reading at least one page, a day of Qur'an throughout the year, 365 days a year, read, you know, one page a day insha'Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said, the most beloved deeds to Allah are those dens consistently, even if they are small. And then there's the mindfulness and discipline, the takwa. So, we know that, you know, fasting is not just about not eating from dawn until dusk. It's the ultimate exercise in self-control. You know, it proves you can resist your impulses for a higher purpose. So, we know that lying and gossiping and backbiting and anger actually nullifies the fast.
19You know, it puts like a black dot on our good deeds and taints it. So, we always, we have to have to have to try and make sure that we control ourselves from idle talk and backbiting during the fast. So, use this discipline to curb those negative habits. Before you carry on, I think also the negative habits, you know, lots of people say, after Ramadan, I'll do the Sastakhfirullah, I'll continue my Netflix series after Ramadan or, you know, all the things that you've put on hold for Ramadan, but now you can't wait to get back to those bad habits after Ramadan. And I think if we can try with that discipline also, you know, you manage to, you know, not consume all these negative things during Ramadan. So, you know, making effort after Ramadan. You're not saying, you know, completely do it.
20Because I mean, everybody has their own pace, everybody has their own journey. And, you know, their time will come when they go on to the state path. We can't force everybody to, you know, go on to the state path. We want to encourage them and want to, but if you do that, and that's the whole thing of Ramadan, is that, you know, we do these things to reset our body, to get rid of those bad habits, to break those bad habits. And that's one of the things about Darawi Salah, is that it's not just a Salah, we take a break, we take a pause when we're eating after the Turaqa'as, after the Furaqa'as, we, to reflect on what we've read, you know, to just let, like Isa mentioned the other day, Quran feeds our soul. So, just for our soul to consume that which we have read, and, you know, to encompass our body
25so that we can continue on the spiritual journey in inshaAllah. InshaAllah, I mean, I want to add that, you know, maybe we should even try and make an effort to read the English translation of everything that we've been reading in the Quran, so it also helps us to understand more, and, you know, no more exactly what we're saying, like you said, you know, can take that pause and reflect. So, that'll maybe help us to reflect, but I also like the fact that you mentioned that, because I saw something recently where it said that there are, somewhere, where was it? They had like, Turaqa'as was like almost like a two or three hour night thing. Yes, four hours. Oh, four hours. Yes, I think it was something Morocco or something. I'm not sure. Were there actually stuff to have a tea break and they have tea and biscuits? Because the, the, the Molana that was leading the Turaqa'as was actually explaining everything before they read
26in English and Arabic to the congregation and telling them, this is what we're going to read so that they would understand that this is what we're about to read so that they could appreciate what they're about to read. You know, no, just like rush through it because we need to finish a Khatam in ten days or fifteen days. You know, that's become the trend now that we finish a Khatam now, now we can just, what, masjid hop, as they call it. And that's not, that's, I don't think that's the essence of the reason why we do it. It's not to complete so many Khatams in a month. It's to understand, to appreciate and to learn more about the Qur'an in inshaAllah. And, and Islam. Yes, and inshaAllah. Yes, so we must just make sure that we maintain that focus that we develop during the month, you know, and carried with us in inshaAllah.
27Okay, so then we must develop empathy and community. So, you know, that's something that we think in Ramadan, we make a point of doing, we break bread with others, feeling the hang of those less fortunate, which build a strong sense of social responsibility. So, let's continue that, to support local causes, or checking on neighbours, friends and family during the year, throughout the year, and make that inshaAllah. And make that spirit of the community, iftar, be kept alive through regular family dinners or local volunteering. Obviously not, you know, you don't have to have iftar during the year, but I mean, like family dinners, family lunches and so on inshaAllah. All the six days of inshaAllah, inshaAllah. InshaAllah. And then, I'm sure there's a lot more values, right? But I think we need to end off soon, so I'm going to end off with this last one, intentionality, near. So, in Ramadan, we know that every action from eating to sleeping is done with the intention of pleasing Allah,
32so we should just carry this mindfulness into our work and daily chores every day, reminding ourselves why we're doing a task. And by doing that, we can turn a mundane errand into an act of worship. Once again, if we would like to join the conversation during the week, you are welcome to do so on our social media pages at iLuvs.com that I-L-O-V-E-Z-A-C-O-M. I mean, from myself Nabihah, from Aisa and from Ziyad. Enjoy your Sunday and we wish you a wonderful week ahead in ShAllah. Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
