How can we become better at perspective taking?
0:03
Hello and welcome to Communication Psychology and HR.
0:06
My name is Gihard Orbent.
0:08
I'm a psychologist from Hamburg, Germany here in the Republic of Moldova,
0:11
specialized in international intercultural and multi-language contexts.
0:17
We hear all those trendy words like empathy or active listening or emotional intelligence.
0:23
However, without the capacity to take the position or perspective of our interlocutor of the other one,
0:32
it's quite difficult to achieve any of those.
0:35
Now, the problem is we tend to live in information with bubbles,
0:39
we consume information we like, and we tend to gather with people that share our values and opinions.
0:48
However, many of our customers, clients and colleagues share different opinions on politics,
0:55
the economy, society, religion.
0:58
So, I highly recommend doing the following.
1:02
Consume media from media outlets that are opposite to your personal convictions.
1:11
Also, consume media that represents the current opposition.
1:15
So, during the tenure of Joe Biden, I consume more Fox and the New York Post.
1:22
Now, with Donald Trump, more CNN and the New York Times.
1:29
During that, you will understand what your colleagues, clients and customers,
1:34
preoccupations are, their fears, expectations,
1:39
and showing that you care for their perspective makes already a big, big way towards a better relationship.
1:48
I need to stress, it doesn't mean you need to agree with those views and opinions.
1:55
The same you can do professionally because often we have problems in communication
2:00
between departments, between professions, everybody speaks in his or her jargon.
2:07
So, do the same because I, as psychologists, tend to consume psychological information
2:14
by books on psychology or research articles.
2:19
And not all psychology, so I focus on social psychology or work in organization psychology,
2:27
but I don't consume much about clinical or abnormal psychology or developmental or lifespan psychology.
2:36
So, you could do the same, you make a list of what departments or professions you have to interact,
2:43
both colleagues and customers and clients.
2:48
It could be IT, marketing, sales, human resources, engineering, quality management, and many others.
2:55
And your approaches, as you approach learning a new language, so you understand,
3:01
I need new words vocabulary, and every day you write one to five words down.
3:07
Ideally, you introduce them into an app like Anky, Flashcards or Quizlet,
3:14
so then later you can rehearse those words and their definitions.
3:19
Doing that will establish a better rapport with your interlocutor,
3:25
because they will see, oh, you are speaking our language, you use our phrases vocabulary,
3:34
especially in advertising, this is crucial, and it has been understood for at least 100 years
3:41
that you need to study the way our customers speak if you want to sell them something.
3:48
But the same is valid, of course, also for communication, for conversations.
3:55
So, what do you think about this?
3:58
Please write me your comments, questions.
4:01
If you want me to make a short master class for your organization team,
4:06
it's online if you're not in Moldova, of course.
4:09
Every week I do one such master class, you don't even need to buy me a coffee,
4:15
but what I expect is critical questions, comments that help me develop my theory and my practice better.
4:25
All the best and see you next week, bye-bye.
