Knies Stays Put, Matthews Hit Sparks Concern

Plenty of buzz in the NHL this week beyond the big hit on Toronto Maple Leafs captain Austin Matthews and Edmonton's rough patch. Insiders cleared up rumors that the Leafs were shopping young forward Matthew Nees around the trade deadline. They never got close to moving him, just fielded some calls from other teams like any good management would. Earlier this week on a TSN show, reporters confirmed Nees stays put as a core piece for Toronto's future. Every squad has those near untouchable guys, and he's one for the Leafs right now. That collision with Anaheim's Raccoh Goudus late in the second period shook things up. Matthews took a knee on knee hit, set out the rest of the game, and now awaits MRI results. Goudus drew a major penalty and misconduct, with a league hearing that can mean up to five games suspended. These worry about the offensive hit if their star misses time.

1:02Meanwhile Buffalo Sabers are pushing hard on a new deal for Winger Alex Touch. The 29 year old could hit free agency otherwise, but talks aim for 8 to 10 million dollars a year on the cap. Over in Edmonton, Conor McDavid's team friendly two year extension last fall gives the Oilers this season, and next to chase a cup.
