She suffered a heart attack on Monday, according to her representatives. She co-hosted the populous series from 1987 through 2002, where she became known as the Apollo Queen of Fashion and brought warmth to millions of viewers. Her family shared their deep sadness online, thanking fans for the love and prayers during this tough time. BET posted a heartfelt tribute, calling her a symbol of elegance and cultural pride for women of color on TV, back in the 1980s. Before Apollo, Shepard built a strong career in the arts, with Broadway shows like Bubbling Brown Sugar and Porgy and Best. She also acted in films such as The Wiz and TV series, including A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue and Grey's Anatomy, a Howard University graduate and Delta Sigma Theta member.
