Katherine Floods: Supply Lines Open, Evacuations Continue

Catherine is still under an emergency flood warning after its worst flooding in 28 years,

with river levels just below 17.5 meters and starting to drop.

Nearby daily river and now a U face major flooding at 14.7 meters and climbing higher.

Supply lines are finally opening up across the top end.

Chief Minister Leah Fanokhiaro says two trains reached Darwin in the last day, and the southern

part of the steward highway is now clear for food.

Residents in Catherine are told to stay indoors until authorities give the all clear.

Power outages have fallen from 1500 homes yesterday to just 600 today,

but eight schools, the hospital, courts, and nearby areas remain closed.

A temporary emergency department is running from St. John ambulance headquarters.

Meanwhile, everyone from daily river and now U has been evacuated to Darwin

for the second time this year, with this flood already topping februaries,

peak of 14.2 meters.

Folks from Palampa and Angan-Marianga went to Darwin too,

while joke-mangan residents are at Madaranka School.

The northern steward highway section opens this morning,

and local spots like the Eastside Mini-Mart and Caffin Fruit and Veg are stocked and open.
