It all began with a song, Mama's Broken Heart, from Lambert's 2011 album. Musgraves wrote it for her own debut, but says it was pitched to Lambert without her okay. Back then, Lambert was the bigger name, so she recorded it. Musgraves explained she had been writing for others for years, and finally had songs that felt like her own. She considered her co-writers and let it go, even though it stung. Both women hailed from small Texas towns and later chased music dreams in Nashville. In the end, losing that track pushed Musgraves to ride Mary Go-Round for her first album. That record took home a Grammy for Best Country album in 2014. Looking back, she sees it as a good turn that shaped her path. Fast forward, and the two have buried the hatchet. Musgraves spotted Lambert on Instagram with her horse and thought of their shared divorces.
