JUST SHORT: Auburn Baseball CAN'T CLOSE vs Nebraska

And unfortunately, it ends Auburn just short despite having, you know, all the momentum you could ask for. They lose 9 to 8 in extra innings in a game where you had a lead in the 8th. 1:00your first list in every single day. Lindsey Crosby, baseball, Lindsey Crosby of the barn hanging out with us tonight. Yeah, I mean, those last few innings from a pitching standpoint, we look at the 8th inning, the 9th inning, and then the 10th inning, Lindsey, that's, that was the difference. Yeah, I mean Auburn, Auburn facing a very tough starting pitcher in Ty Horn. Like they get him out of the game early. He doesn't make it out of the 4th inning. They hang five runs for earned on him. And when you get to the 8th inning, they go with, it's the Friday night plan that they've kind of stuck with, right? Like they've got Garrett Brewer. They stick him into the game, hoping to close it out. And just really did not look like himself in the 8th inning. Three hits, two runs. He rebounds and he makes it all the way through. He makes it through that and the 9th. But just it almost it almost felt like Auburn maybe tried to push the pitching

2:06a little bit farther than they should have. And it's it's a little knowing how deep this lineup is and how deep this roster is. I think that was a little frustrating. Like the top of the 8th, Jet Johnson's back out there. And Boyer gets on via error. Auburn's defense was not great tonight. We'll get to that later. Strike out, single puts runners on the corners with one out. And they go to Brewer for a five out save. And he just, he gives up multiple runs here. Can't get these guys out out. When he gets out of the game and he's fine. He settles then he gets to the 9th. OK, like he three straight strikeouts in the 9th. But just too little too late at that point. And then you have, I don't know. Ryan Hetzler just didn't have it tonight. And every now that that happens, it's frustrating. But really just from a pitching perspective.

3:09And we'll get to the offense. I have thoughts there too, especially the last couple of bats. But from a pitching perspective. That's what Chad's talking about those last two at bats. Yeah, and we're getting there next year. From a pitching perspective, just guys that you normally have that just didn't have it tonight. And I mean, you rallied, you were able to get out of the 9th, get out of the 10th eventually, but it was too late. Let's talk about those last two at bats. Because I think that's what most people are going to want to talk about, specifically the last one. We talked a lot about approach the last time you and I went live. And obviously we're talking about a walkoff. There's a chance we're going to get to do that two times in a row here. But obviously that wasn't the case. When you look at the last two at bats, Lindsay with the bases loaded for the first one, for the last one in a situation where you can win the game, what did you like and not like about those last two at bats?

4:14Brand new pitcher. It's like what the fourth or fifth pitcher they had in the inning, you got to make him throw you strikes. Like you absolutely have to make him throw you strikes. And Bristol Carter, he ends up grounding out. You get the run on it. And he almost beat the throw at first. It's close, yeah. But he swings at something off the plate. Like he could have gotten to three and one. Only one pitch was actually in the strike zone. He gets to two two and then he grounds out. And if it's a three one count, that at bat looks different. You have a much better chance at getting a drivable pitch for an extra base hit to go ahead and get to win the game right there. So that's kind of mistake number one. It's just getting a little bit too impatient. Make the new pitcher, who they clearly got up in a hurry, making him throw you strikes. And then Chase Frailett coming in, runners on second and third,

5:18and swinging at the first pitch. And that's just one of those. Butch talked about this last, not last weekend, after Cincinnati, right? About guys just maybe trying to do a little too much. And you and I talked on here on Tuesday. Now, the rally late was because they stopped trying to do too much. And they just settled for getting the ball in play. Take it into the opposite field, making the defense make a play. Both defense has struggled tonight to actually get the routine plays done. And that was the ball game. I mean, you had a chance to rally from your and pick up your bullpen. And you didn't do it. And it's because you got too impatient trying to get the moment instead of just doing your job. Yeah. Ooh, man. So both teams used a bunch of pitchers. I mean, how does that impact the rest of the series? In your mind, Lindsay. OK, so the concern for Aura, we'll do them first

6:19because they're, they're who matters. Garrett Brewer is done, probably. May he might come back on Sunday, maybe? He threw 36 pitches tonight. That's, I mean, he's done for tomorrow. He may make it back on Sunday. Ryan Hetzler, you still have him for tomorrow if you want him. He threw 13 pitches. He wasn't effective tonight, but he threw 13 pitches. And the way Butch likes to do things, Butch is going to want to get him back out there. Give him a chance to flush this and move on. So you have Hetzler. You don't have Ruhr until maybe Sunday. Nebraska by comparison, they use seven guys. Now, the issue is a lot of their guys in that 10th inning, one guy through six, one guy through seven, one guy through six. But like one of their best relievers, one of their best relievers on their squad. He threw 44 pitches. He's probably done for the weekend. You might bring him back on Sunday for like, into a couple of batters, but he's probably done.

7:21I would say Auburn's in a better position, simply because of how they use their guys, then Nebraska is. Although Auburn's probably down one of their two closures for at least tomorrow. All right, Chris Rembert was back tonight. Was that a good call and using him the way that they did? As well as other parts of the offense. We'll jump into that in just a moment right here. All right, recapping Auburn's eight to nine loss and extra endings against Nebraska. Chris Rembert making his return from injury was OK. I guess Lindsay had three at bats. Had two strikeouts, but he did get on base with a, guess what I'm going to walk. Guess he got on with a walk. So what did you expect from Rembert?

10:26Did they rush him back? What did you see from him tonight? Physically, he looked to be OK. Granted, we didn't see him do anything, do any running, right? We just saw him walk, you know, kind of jog the first base. But he, his timing clearly isn't 100%. He's still trying to get the rust off. I mean, he hasn't been completely shut down from doing anything, but he's not been getting a lot of live at bat. So you can kind of tell when you watch him in the box. They did pinch run for him with Ty Thompson. That's not going to think about Rembert. Ty Thompson's the fastest white kid on campus. Like, I don't know if you can say that. I really don't know. Sorry. I don't know. Yeah, he's the fastest kid on campus. Get him out there, let him run the bases. Then they don't have him later. I do think that you probably don't see Chris Rembert tomorrow unless he comes out of tonight feeling really, really good because you have a day game tomorrow.

11:26You probably sit him out of the game. You may have him pinch hit, right? You may use him late in something like, I mean, they use Logan Gregorio to pinch it. They use Lucas Steel to pinch it. They use K to pinch it. You may end up going with Chris Rembert as a pinch hit or tomorrow, but he probably doesn't get back into the lineup until Sunday. I am curious to see do they try him at second base or is it another DH day? Again, probably depends on how he feels, but I don't think you'll see him tomorrow, but that's not until that speculation, right? Yeah. But it just felt like offensively he wasn't fully back up to speed where he needs to be. Just didn't really seem like he was tracking the ball as well as he normally does. So it felt like Auburn's offense was kind of cooking earlier in the game. Obviously through four, they had a pretty solid five to lead for most of the game and then the eighth inning, everything's kind of started to change and they kind of felt like they were losing control over everything.

12:28It was really like, what was the biggest pivot that you saw? Like, because to me, it, I don't know, was the approach drastically different from those first few innings to after that in your mind. I think some of it was when Nebraska put in, what's his first name, Cooper, Cooper Katzki. They put him in, I want to say it was the fifth inning and from that point on, Auburn's hitter is just really kind of struggling. Auburn didn't pick up a hit. Crackshaw, they had a double in the fifth before he got in. Once he got in the game, they didn't have another hit until I believe it was the eighth. They finally got something off of him when he left the game. Like, they just did not really touch him that well. And it felt, it almost felt like either they hadn't prepared for his stuff or he was doing something different from what they expected. Cause they never looked comfortable in the box.

13:32But I do also think that some of this was, like, credits in Nebraska. I'm not, I'm not saying Auburn was bad. I'm giving them credit for being good. The whole game just kind of felt like it turned in the eighth inning. And Jett Johnson coming in and the immediate hit by pitch. Really, I think I just saw that in the, in the comments too. Shout out to whoever that was that, that same observation I did. Garrett Brewer comes out of the game after that single. Johnson comes in first and third. And that's really where the whole momentum changed. But Auburn's offense wasn't doing anything against Katsky. They just could not figure out what he was doing. Right. And they couldn't get any sort of offense until he left the game. And even then they got guys on base in the night and just couldn't seem to, or in the eighth and couldn't get him in. It was really the tenth inning where Auburn finally found some offense again after the reliever parade. Well, okay.

14:32So, so anything else about tonight that should we discuss before we look ahead to tomorrow's game? I think the only last thing is, I just, I want to shout out the McCrain boys. I don't quite think we all realize how good these guys have been. Both of them, they combine for three hits and four runs. They draw three walks, drive in a run. And whenever you get to the point where Chris River puts back in the game and back playing second base, Brandon McCrain's got to be in the game somewhere. You can't take Brandon McCrain now. He's got to be in somewhere. He's hitting almost 600 now. He honestly, the fact that they had him so low in the lineup kind of bothers me a little bit because he looks like he's Auburn's best hitter right now. Chase Feilick had a rough day. He was 0 for four. Bob goes like two for five, you know, had a single to double, but Brandon McCrain looks like your best, your best player on offense.

15:34Yeah. And so I just want to give them some credit. I am also curious with Bristol Carter, how he feels in the morning. He had that thing, he was that diving catch attempt instead of field, going forward. He kind of comes up, holding the shoulder. They had him throw. He looked like he was okay. Yeah. But something like that, he could wake up in the morning and really not feel well. And if that's the case, you're going to see more Cade who's also been playing banged up. The good news is Bob can play center field. Lucas Steele has played some left field. You can use Bingham in the right. You can use, you know, obviously, Mason McCrain was in the game today. You have options, but something to watch for is do you have Bristol Carter tomorrow? All right, Auburn will start Jackson Sanders tomorrow on the mound who's been pretty solid up to this point this year. Kind of feels like there's more pressure on him in this start versus any other start he's had so far this season.

16:35Yeah. And the good news is of the three starters this weekend for Nebraska. Carson Jassa, the red shirt software that goes on Saturday has been the most getable. He's allowed a couple runs in each of his starts in the first couple weekends. And he's been, you know, kind of getting right to about five and die if he's not been running deep into games. So given the fact that you went to extras, you use, you got into their bullpen a lot and early today. And you have their, I guess, most getable starter of the three. Things are primed for Auburn to be able to even up the series tomorrow. It's, I still feel like this is a winnable series, especially if you get the early offense you got today. I do want to see the lineup. I do think you need to move. Again, I'll say I'll, I'll keep giving him credit. You need to move brain of a crane up. You probably need to have made some crane in there as well. But I'll absolutely just credit to Nebraska.

17:38They played their butts off. They had a great rally late and then another great rally in the 10th and then they held off Auburn from getting that final run across. And no, I mean, that was, that was awesome. He was an entertaining game. Like we said earlier, I mean, roller coaster of emotions. There's a few Nebraska folks in the chat. Hey guys.
