Juneau Assembly Postpones Eaglecrest Ski Area Vote

This comes after a new estimate revealed the city-owned ski areas gondola project could cost $37 million, way up from the under 10. Million dollars projected when the city bought it in 2022. Mayor Beth Welden first proposed turning the board from empowered to just advisory back in February, pointing to leadership changes and money troubles at the mountain. An empowered board sets its own policies and makes decisions, but advisory status would limit them to suggestions needing assembly approval. At Monday night's meeting, the mayor asked to delay the vote until late September, saying the board faces big choices ahead that could reshape the ski area. Some assembly members agreed it's not the right time, though others worry the uncertainty might hurt their search for a new general manager.
