Jones Meets with 49ers, Seeking Backup Role

0:00On March 23rd, Robert Jones, a veteran guard who started 30 gains from Miami, signed a one-year deal worth $3.75 million. With the Cowboys last year, most of that money was guaranteed at $3 million. But a broken bone in his neck sidelined him for the whole season, landing him back on the free agent market at age 27. Now more than two weeks into free agency, Jones is still unsigned but picking up steam. Reports say the 49ers met with him on Monday, showing real interest in adding depth up front. The 49ers have Dominic Pooney said as their starting right guard. They also brought in Brett Toth on a one-year $2.5 million pact, with over $2.2 million guaranteed. Toth will compete with Connor Colby for the left guard spot, but Jones is visiting hence their keeping options open there. Jones put up solid but not elite marks from pro football focus, ranking around 40th among guards in 2022 and 2023. He handled both guard spots in Miami and was their main left guard guy those years.
