John Metchie Becomes Unrestricted Free Agent

The New York Jets have decided not to tend a restrictive free agent, John Mechie, according to reports from Jordan Schultz. This move clears the way for the 25-year-old wide receiver to hit free agency unrestricted. Mechie was selected by the Houston Texans with the 44th overall pick back in 2022. He missed his entire rookie season recovering from an ACL tear and was later diagnosed with leukemia. After battling back, Mechie put up solid numbers in the 2023-2024 season with Houston, hauling in 40 passes for, 412 yards and one touchdown. The Texans traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles during training camp last summer in a deal involving Titan Harrison Bryant and a swap of 3rd round picks. Later, at the 2025 trade deadline, the Eagles sent him to the Jets for running back Michael Carter II and a late round pick swap.

1:00In 2027, with the Eagles, he managed just 4 catches for 18 yards over 7 games, but he stepped up with the Jets, grabbing 29 passes for, 256 yards and 2 touchdowns in 9 games last season.
